Cold Ambush

Event Content

Cold Ambush has been removed from the game as of the 4th of February 2023 as it was part of the Violent Night Event.
It came back in Sandbox mode, though it was eventually removed from it on the 8 January 2025. This page has been preserved for historical purposes.

Description

Cold Ambush was the event map for the Violent Night Event. It briefly returned through Sandbox mode, though it was later removed, likely due to how broken it was. Like other event maps, this map had a specialized wave structure with special enemies. Players started with Cash (Gameplay Currency)$800, and an extra Cash (Gameplay Currency)$100 if the player is in the Paradoxum Games group. at the start of the game. Upon triumphing, you were awarded Coin 280, Experience 70 EXP and the Elf Camp tower on the first triumph. This map used the Commander as its narrator.

This map had the HP Locked and Mutation modifiers. The HP Locked modifier set the base health to 200 when starting the game, though the base health could be increased by buying plots. The Mutation modifier increased the health of enemies each wave after their debut in the form of shield health by 4% of their normal health. On Waves ??? and ❄️, an entirely different mechanic was used instead of Mutation due to these waves being endless. Enemies would have their normal health increase over time instead. In Sandbox mode, none of these were applied anymore.

The enemy income shared similar functions with Hardcore mode. You could only receive cash after the enemy was defeated, and the amount of cash received depended on how much damage your own towers had dealt. In Sandbox mode, it used the regular income system other modes use.

The map had passive income and passive base health regeneration. Every 30 seconds, you would have gained cash which you could have used to purchase more towers and heal back your base health, if it was damaged. It also had purchasable plots. When purchased, they gave the player new cliff or ground spots for the player to place towers on. It also increased your base health, passive income and passive base health regeneration. None of this works in Sandbox mode anymore.

Design & Path

Cold Ambush was a village during the winter season. In the middle, there was a Christmas tree. The Christmas tree gained more decorations the higher your base health was during the Violent Night Event. Near the Christmas tree, there were multiple plots that you could buy, which would turn into ground spots, with some plots also turning into ground spots with stone structures that could be used as cliff spots. This did not work in Sandbox mode. Multiple wooden fences surrounded the middle part of the map. On the outer side of the map, there was a large forest with a small village in it, which had multiple wooden buildings of various sizes. A dirt path connected the buildings, with multiple lanterns being visible on the sides of them.

In Sandbox mode, multiple parts of the map had large, translucent blocks on them.

Enemies spawned on the outer side of the map, going onto the Christmas tree, which was the exit. The Ripped Elf, Gatekeeper and Mecha-claus walked around the plots, never walking into the exit. Enemies and units did not spawn in Sandbox mode.

Event Rewards

The game calculated how much Coin Coins and Experience EXP you received based on how many waves you survived and if you won a match. During periods of 50% more Experience EXP (08:00 UTC Friday – 08:00 UTC Sunday), any Experience EXP earned was multiplied by 1.5x. The VIP gamepass also multiplied any Experience EXP earned by 1.25x.

Any rewards that end in a decimal point was rounded down, no matter the first figure of the leading decimal.

Rewards were calculated as:

Coins Reward EXP Reward
(Coin 100 × (Waves/26)^1.75 + Coin 100 (Triumph Only)) × 1.4 Waves 1-9: Waves Completed × Experience 1.923 EXP
Waves 10-❄️: Waves Completed × Experience 0.962 EXP

In Sandbox mode, no rewards could be gotten.

Badges

There was also one badge you could obtain when playing this map, which had additional rewards alongside the badge. It was:

Defeat Mecha-clause!
✖ UNOBTAINABLE
An unknown force is controlling the mind of the elves.. Destroy their secret weapon and save Christmas!

Rewards:
Elf Camp

Plots

Plots could be bought during the Violent Night Event, though none of them worked in Sandbox mode. There were in total 16 plots that you could purchase. There were two types of plots you could buy. The first plot was the plot space, where you get rid of snow. These were cheaper and only provided ground spots. The second plot was the cliff space, where you rebuilt stone, on which you could place cliff towers. These were more expensive, but they provided new ground spots and cliff spots. Additionally, enemies and units would not travel on cliff spaces, regardless of whether they were bought or not. There were 9 plot spaces and 7 cliff spaces.

You started off with 200 base health, Cash (Gameplay Currency)$0 passive income and 0 passive base health regeneration, which you could increase by buying plots. When all plots have been purchased, you would have 800 base health, Cash (Gameplay Currency)$3,400 passive income and 72 passive base health regeneration.

There were two rows of plots, all of which had 8 plots. Each row became more expensive than the previous, but provided higher increase of the passive income, base health and passive base health regeneration. This list details how much each plot increased these statistics by:

Plot Spaces
Row Amount Cost Passive Income Increase Base Health Regen Increase Base Health Increase
1 6 Cash (Gameplay Currency)$600 Cash (Gameplay Currency)$125 3 25
2 3 Cash (Gameplay Currency)$2,500 Cash (Gameplay Currency)$300 6 50
Cliff Spaces
Row Amount Cost Passive Income Increase Base Health Regen Increase Base Health Increase
1 2 Cash (Gameplay Currency)$850 Cash (Gameplay Currency)$125 3 25
2 5 Cash (Gameplay Currency)$3,500 Cash (Gameplay Currency)$300 6 50

Event Wave Structure

The formula for calculating wave bonus on each wave was:

(Cash (Gameplay Currency)$180 + (Cash (Gameplay Currency)$75 × Waves Completed)) ÷ Players

Players did not get a wave bonus when the wave ??? ended.

The waves in Cold Ambush followed these timings:

Waves Wave Timer Skip Time[2]
1-11 1:00 0:19[3]
12 2:00 0:39[4]
13-23 1:00 0:19[5]
24 2:00 0:39[6]
??? 0:00 N/A
❄️ 100:00 N/A

Due to the unique nature of Cold Ambush, the number of enemies that spawned would be extremely hard to count. Additionally, past Wave 24, if the last plot of land was not bought, the game continued in perpetuity. Therefore, the list details the enemy's debut wave and wave dialogue.

Event Strategy

  • It is necessary to purchase plots around the map to increase the passive income, base heath and health regeneration.
    • Purchasing all plots will trigger wave ❄️ and spawn Mecha-claus. You can leave one plot unpurchased if you need additional time to prepare.
      • This is usually not recommended because you will get less passive money and passive base health regeneration from the map, which may cause you to lose on earlier waves.
      • Until you purchase the final plot, the game will be in an endless mode. Enemies will spawn endlessly with increasing health over time.
      • Use this to your advantage to heal base health before activating the last wave.
  • Towers like the Golden Scout, Cowboy, Golden Cowboy or Golden Crook Boss are recommended for the earlier waves.
  • Although you do have a lot of health in this map, it is recommended to not let many enemies get to the exit, due to multiple enemies having abilities that damage your base health by a high amount
  • The Medic is recommended to heal your base health, as many enemies may leak through.
    • It can also be useful later on in cleansing your towers from stuns.
  • Towers like the Executioner, Ranger, Pursuit and Engineer can be useful in killing the Sleighs.
    • The Executioner can also help with killing large hordes of enemies early-mid game, being nearly an all-rounder.
  • High DPS towers like the Engineer, Golden Minigunner, Accelerator or Ranger are needed for later Waves.
  • The Farm and Ace Pilot are disabled in this map, meaning you cannot place them. You should not add them to your loadout, if you are planning to play on this map.
  • Towers with short range, such as the Gladiator, Sledger and Warden will not be effective on this map, due to the enemies coming from all sides.

Trivia

  • The base triumph rewards on this map were Coin 200, Experience 50 EXP and the Elf Camp. However, because of the Mutation and HP Locked, you never actually received this amount of Coin Coins and Experience EXP, as modifiers increased it by 40%.
  • The story behind this map was that the elves have had their minds taken over by an unknown force, which had turned them against Santa, as well as Christmas as a whole.
    • This had led them to use Christmas magic and cheer to turn inanimate festive objects into enemies, such as Gingerbread and Snowmen.
    • The players and their towers were called by Mrs. Claus to defeat the elves, as shown in the trailer for the event. It was most likely that the elves have Santa imprisoned.
  • This was the second map to have objectives, following D00M's Revenge.
    • This was also the second map to have purchasable plots, passive cash income, and a base in the center of the map, also following D00M's Revenge.
    • This was the first map to have passive base health regeneration.
  • Cold Ambush had the highest amount of paths in the game, being 44.
  • The position of the trees on this map were randomly determined in each match.
