Description

Badlands is a Wild West-styled map. It is a two-pathed map, so enemies alternated between the spawn points. It has been remade once since its addition. It was a special map, meaning that it could only appear in the special elevator. Because of this, you needed to be Level 25 or more to play this map. Currently, it can be played in Sandbox mode.

Badlands had the Cowboy modifier, which added cowboy hats onto every enemy. Currently, it has no modifier if played through Sandbox mode.

Badlands once granted the Cowboy upon triumph if the player did not have it and if the mode was Fallen. Triumphing this map on Normal or Molten mode would not grant the player the tower. Additionally, you can also get Experience 50 additional EXP when triumphing this map on Fallen mode.

Design & Path

The second version of Badlands is very mountainous desert, with only a moderate amount of flat plains. Very little vegetation can be seen. Various large buildings lined the path, including a water tower. Various railroad lines can be seen. Two locomotives can be seen on the mainline, one of which is where enemies appeared from. One railway bridge crosses over the cave path. A waterfall can be seen to the side of the map.
The map has two entrance points, at the locomotive and the cave. The two sand paths intersect near the end, which is at the bank.

The first version of Badlands was surrounded by high desert cliffs and encloses a boom town. However, beyond the mountains was a vast expansive desert. There were several mining paraphernalia including a mining railroad and the bank, which you had to defend. Some buildings lined the path and a waterfall with a water tower besides it could be seen. Various dead trees and cacti could be seen around the map.
The map had two entrance points, at the train and the cave. The two dust paths intersected near the end, which was at the bank.

Strategy

  • Due to their long range, Rangers are extremely recommended.
    • However, there are very few good cliff spots on this map, especially for the cave entrance.
    • Due to their abilities to buff towers or slow down enemies, the Commander, DJ Booth, Freezer and Electroshocker are recommended as this map is relatively short.
    • Minigunners, Accelerators, Engineers and Turrets are also recommended due to their high DPS.
    • A well-placed DJ Booth near the intersection of the paths is recommended as the towers located here can reach a good part of the map.
  • There are three optimal spots to place ground towers, the first two bends on both the paths and the point where both paths intersect.
    • Do not rely solely on the point where the paths intersect as it may be very difficult to kill high health or fast enemies due to the lack of path remaining.
  • Be sure to communicate with your teammates, if you have any. This includes knowing who defends each entrance as it is often wise to divide into two teams defending each entrance.
  • Enemies are split on this map. This means that every enemy spawned alternates between the entrances.
    • Enemies are not doubled, though you will need more towers to cover all the places where the enemies spawn.
    • Most of the major bosses spawn at the cave entrance.
      • It is recommended to memorize which entrance important enemies like the first Giant Boss spawn in order to prepare for them on the correct path.
  • Remember that, if you use the Military Base, only one unit will spawn from it, which will go down a random path. The same thing applies to the Crook Boss's and Golden Crook Boss's goons.
    • Therefore, relying on them is not recommended, especially for the early game, as they are inconsistent and may not go down the required path.

Trivia

  • This map was likely named after Badlands national park in South Dakota, USA.
  • Prior to the Overhaul Update, units, like the Tank, only went to the cave entrance.
  • The cave path of this map was the shortest path in the game.
  • This was the first non-event map to reward a tower upon triumph, that being the Cowboy.
  • There were many Easter eggs that could be found in the original version of Badlands.
    • An anime picture could be seen on the side of one of the cliffs.
    • A cowboy emoji could also be seen on the side of a building.
    • Gurt could be seen by the railroad bridge.
    • Scoobis could be seen in the pond.
    • A dead Cowboy's skeleton could be seen in the hills, as well as a cactus with a cowboy hat.
  • In the second version of this map, an Easter egg can be seen periodically. On the railroad bridge above the cave path, a minecart will appear with a humanoid (Your_Adversary) inside it.
    • Additionally, in the second version of this map, a sign by the cave entrance read "Dusty Bridges", a reference to a map of the same name.
  • The bank in Badlands is called "Le Bank".
  • Unlike many other maps that existed prior to the MEGA Update, this map was not remade or removed, even though it had a blocky look.
  • Like every other map with two paths, all enemies (including major bosses) used to spawn twice prior to the Frost Invasion Update. After the update, enemies would alternate in spawn points between the paths.
