Pigs are a real-world animal that have sometimes appeared in the Mario franchise. They also have some fictional varieties and created for Mario-related media, typically ones that are anthropomorphic and capable of speaking in English.

Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door

Pigs make a somewhat large role during "Chapter 4: For Pigs the Bell Tolls". During the events of that chapter, the citizens of Twilight Town known as Twilighters are being turned into Pigs by Doopliss. It should be noted that even non-Twilighters such as The Traveling Sisters Three and Dupree are turned into Pigs during their visits in Twilight Town. After Doopliss is defeated, the Pigs turn back into their respective characters.

A little earlier before this, another pig is seen named Mr. Hoggle who owns the hot dog stand in Glitzville. However, unlike the pigs that appeared when Doopliss was around, Mr. Hoggle is an anthropometric pig that is able to speak full sentences and stand on two legs.
