NCT WISH

NCT WISH (엔시티 위시) is a six-member boy group under SM Entertainment and the sixth and final sub-unit of NCT. They made their debut on February 21, 2024 through the SMTOWN Live 2024 : SMCU Palace@Tokyo, before releasing the single "Wish" on February 28.

History

Pre-debut: NCT Universe : LASTART, "Hands Up", name reveal

On September 4, 2022, news reports revealed leaked documents and reports of SM Entertainment's upcoming schedule for the fourth quarter of 2022 in which the group was listed as NCT 140, which is the longitudinal coordinates of Tokyo.[1]

On November 30, 2022, Lee Soo Man revealed to CNBC that he was planning to create two new units, NCT Saudi and NCT Tokyo.[2]

On January 26, 2023, it was announced that SM would hold an audition in Japan for any male born between 2001 and 2008 to discover new NCT members and prepare for the launch of NCT Tokyo.[3] It was also reported that NCT Tokyo would be making their debut in the first half of 2023.[4]

On February 24, 2023, SM confirmed that NCT Tokyo would debut in 2023 and would be the final expansion of NCT. With the unit's debut, NCT’s "infinite expansion" has come to an end as the label will focus on supporting the current members.[5]

On May 24, SM announced that two SMROOKIES would soon be announced as members of the group and other members would be chosen through a pre-debut reality show.[6] On June 28, SM Entertainment announced that Sion and Yushi, as part of SMROOKIES and NCT Tokyo.[7] On June 30, SM Entertainment revealed that a pre-debut reality show titled NCT Universe : LASTART would be airing on July 27 and will show the group formation process of the final NCT unit.[8] The first teaser was released on July 5.[9]

On September 7, during the 7th episode of NCT Universe : LASTART, Riku, Sakuya, Jaehee, Jungmin and Ryo were confirmed to be the debuting members and would be joining Sion and Yushi to form the NCT subunit. Additionally, it was announced that NCT NEW TEAM will be performing on the 2023 NCT Concert - NCT Nation : To The World.[10]

On October 2, SM Entertainment announced that Jungmin would be departing from NCT NEW TEAM and returning to being a trainee due to health concerns, and that the group would continue their activities with six members.[11]

On October 7, it was announced that the group would release a Japanese pre-debut single "Hands Up" the following day. Additionally, it was confirmed that the group would be debuting in 2024.[12]

On January 18, 2024, the group released a teaser for their upcoming debut, revealing the name of the unit to be NCT WISH.[13]

2024: Debut with "Wish", "Songbird", "Dunk Shot", Steady, Wishful, Riku's hiatus

Through SM Entertainment's 3Q23 earning release, it was revealed that NCT WISH would be releasing two singles, one of them being Japanese.[14] On January 18, 2024, it was announced that the group would be debuting in February.[15] The following day, it was revealed that NCT WISH would debut on the SMTOWN Live 2024 : SMCU Palace@Tokyo stage on February 21. They would showcase their debut song "Wish", which was released in both Korean and Japanese versions on February 28.[16]

On May 4, the group released a teaser for their second single "Songbird", which was released on June 26.[17]

On May 8, SM Entertainment announced that NCT WISH will be releasing a mini album and a single in the third quarter of the year.[18] On August 27, it was reported that the group will pre-release a song in early September before having a comeback with an album later in the month. SM Entertainment later confirmed that NCT WISH was preparing for a comeback aiming for September.[19] On September 2, NCT WISH announced that they would be pre-releasing "Dunk Shot" on September 9, before releasing their first mini album Steady on September 24.[20]

On October 8, SM Entertainment announced that NCT WISH would release their first Japanese full-length album Wishful on December 25.[21] It was released digitally on November 27.[22]

On October 22, SM Entertainment released a statement announcing that member Riku would be going on a hiatus period from activities after a recent "worsening of his health" to receive sufficient rest and stability.[23]

2025: "Miracle", Riku's return, Poppop

On November 5, 2024, SM Entertainment shared plans for NCT WISH's second mini album, aiming for release in the first quarter of 2025.[24]

On January 14, 2025, it was announced that NCT WISH would be releasing "Miracle", a remake of the 2005 SUPER JUNIOR song, as a pre-release for the SM Entertainment 30th anniversary album 2025 SMTOWN : The Culture, The Future.[25]

On February 3, SM Entertainment announced that Riku would be coming back to the group in March for the NCT WISH Asia Tour Log In concerts and would be contributing to the production of the group's new album scheduled for the first half of the year.[26] On February 10, SM Entertainment revealed that NCT WISH will be releasing their second mini album in the second quarter of the year.[27] On February 28, it was confirmed that NCT WISH will release a mini album in April.[28] On March 20, the group announced their comeback with their second mini album, Poppop, slated for release on April 14.[29]
