Hyoyeon (효연) is a South Korean singer-songwriter, rapper, and DJ under SM Entertainment. She is a member of the girl group Girls' Generation, its second sub-unit Girls' Generation-Oh!GG and the female unit GOT the beat.

As a DJ, she goes by the name HYO.

Career

Pre-debut

Hyoyeon's formal dance training began in elementary school; she learned hip hop, jazz, and Latin dance at her neighborhood's hip-hop school.^[1]

She auditioned for SM Entertainment at the age of 11 through SM's 2000 Casting System.^[2] In 2004, she, alongside SUPER JUNIOR's Siwon, were sent to Beijing to study Chinese.^{[citation needed]}

Before debuting with Girls' Generation, she worked with Janet Jackson and was BoA's silhouette dancer during a performance at Mnet Km Music Video Festival 2005.^[3]

2007: Debut with Girls' Generation

Hyoyeon debuted as a member of Girls' Generation on August 5, 2007 with the group's first single "Into the New World".

2012: Dancing with the Stars

In April 2012, she became a contestant on the dance competition show Dancing with the Stars. She and her partner, Kim Hyun-suk, finished the show in 2nd place.^[4]

2016: Solo debut

She made her solo debut on December 2, 2016 with the digital single "Mystery".

2018: DJ debut, Oh!GG

On April 4, 2018, SM Entertainment announced Hyoyeon would be making her debut as a DJ using the stage name HYO.^[5] Her first single as a DJ, "Sober", was released on April 18.

On September 5, she debuted as a member of Girls' Generation's second sub-unit Girls' Generation-Oh!GG with the release of their single "Lil' Touch".

2022: Deep

On May 2, 2022, a teaser image was posted which revealed that she will be releasing her first mini album, Deep, on May 16.^[6]

2023: "Picture"

On August 2, 2023, E Daily reported that Hyoyeon will be having a comeback in August.^[7] Later in the day, SM confirmed the reports.^[8] On August 16, a teaser image was posted which revealed that she will be releasing her seventh digital single, "Picture", on August 22.^[9]

2024: "Retro Romance"

On February 8, 2024, SM Entertaiment revealed that Hyoyeon will be releasing a single in the second half of the year.^[10] On May 8, SM Entertainment announced that the single will be released in the third quarter of the year.^[11] On August 23, a teaser image was posted which revealed that she will be releasing her first English digital single, "Retro Romance", on September 26.^[12]

In December 2012, Hyoyeon began dating businessman Kim Jun-hyung. The couple broke up in 2014 after dating for nearly two years.^[13]
