Brotius Shad, usually referred to as Captain Shad, is a major antagonist in the Blake's 7 episode "The Harvest of Kairos".
He was portrayed by Anthony Gardner.
Biography
Captain Shad was a Terran Federation officer who had command of the escort shuttle for the automated kairopan transport ship, transporting the valuable cargo harvested from the planet Kairos, a world that could only be visited safely for a short period every fifteen years. With the same period nearing an end, Shad contacted President Servalan and revealed that the kairopan harvest had been greater than expected and asked whether he should abandon or destroy the excess kairopan. Instead, under Servalan's orders, Shad left a group of workers and one of his guards behind on the planet.
Shad was then contacted by Acting Major Ven Jarvik, who Servalan had placed in charge of protecting the shipment. (Jarvik spoke of Shad with familiarity, and Shad's reaction to him suggested the reverse may also be true.) Jarvik was aware that Tarrant and the Liberator crew were going to be making an attempt to hijack the shipment. Under Jarvik's instructions, Shad placed a group of guards aboard the transport ship to ambush the crew when they came aboard. Although Avon killed the guards in an ambush of his own, Shad and more guards were hiding inside the actual crates. Once the crates were on board, Shad and his men emerged and took control of the ship without a fight.
Shad teleported to Servalan's command ship to report to her and Jarvik, and brought Servalan back to the Liberator to inspect the prisoners. He remained aboard the ship as Servalan stranded the former crew on Kairos, with Jarvik later going down to get their teleport bracelets and bringing Dayna back as a prisoner. The remaining crewmembers escaped Kairos' surface in a lunar module, with Avon rigging the module so the Liberator's sensors would see it as an alien ship of slightly greater combat capability. Tarrant then contacted the Liberator and bluffed Servalan into standing down. Servalan ordered Shad to kill Dayna, but Jarvik stepped between them as he fired, and Shad accidentally killed his superior. Dayna pointed out they needed someone to work the teleport, and transported Servalan, Shad and the rest of the Federation personnel to the kairopan transport ship.
