Leylan is the secondary antagonist of the Blake's 7 episode "Space Fall" and a minor antagonist in the following episode, "Cygnus Alpha".
He was portrayed by the late Glyn Owen.
Biography
Commander Leylan was an officer in the Terran Federation civil administration, who commanded the prison ship London, responsible for transferring prisoners to the penal planet Cygnus Alpha. He was in charge of transporting the group of prisoners that included Blake and many of his future crew. He was aware that his first officer, Raiker, had frequent liaisons with female prisoners and, aware that Jenna was among the latest batch, warned him to be discreet.
When Blake led an attempted breakout of the prisoners, Leylan left much of the work of recapturing them to his crew and chided one of the guards, Dainer, for killing an unarmed prisoner. With Blake, Jenna and Avon, the only prisoners not to have been recaptured, having sealed themselves in the computer room, Leylan tried to negotiate with them to surrender but Blake refused to back down. Raiker asked Leylan's permission to try something, then began summarily executing prisoners until Blake surrendered. Leylan countermanded Raiker's order to have Jenna taken to his quarters, placing the trio in restraint, and warned Raiker there would be a full report on the incident.
Shortly after, Leylan and his crew detected the Liberator drifting after a space battle and Leylan and Raiker agreed to try and salvage it for the bounty. However, after an initial attempt to board it resulted in three crewmembers failing to return (with it later revealed two had been killed and the other driven mad), Leylan wanted to abandon the plan but Raiker convinced him to use Blake, Jenna and Avon as a boarding party. Leylan told the trio their sentences would be quashed if they helped out. From Leylan's point of view, the move was a disaster as the three prisoners managed to gain control of the ship and escape, killing Raiker in the process.
Leylan proceeded to transport the remaining prisoners to Cygnus Alpha, arming the guards and dosing them with suppressant gas, although he noted it was too late. As the prisoners were unloaded, Leylan transmitted a report to the Federation on the escapes and the deaths of five of his crew, predicting Blake would find the Federation before vice versa. He lifted off from Cygnus Alpha as soon as possible, not wanting to linger on the planet.
