Astalos

Astalos is a Flying Wyvern first introduced in Monster Hunter Generations.

Appearance

The body of an Astalos is mostly covered in sharp, dark green plating, though it has a more bright-colored underside. Unlike most Flying Wyverns, his wings resemble those of an insect, more specifically a Glasswing butterfly. His tail makes up almost half of the monster's length, and has two pairs of pincers at the tip, similar to an earwig. He has a relatively small head, with a large horn on top of it. His eyes are red, but occasionally turn green when it is charged.

Behavior and Abilities

Astalos can generate green electricity by moving and rubbing its body parts, in which it can release this electricity from its wings, tail, and horn. Its wings have sharp claws, which it uses in ferocious dive-bombing attacks. It can paralyze prey with a strike from its tail, as well as fire bolts of electricity from it. Its horn can create a blade-like current of electricity, which extends the range of its horn attacks and also imbues them with the Thunder element. It can also breathe blasts of electricity which can split into two pillars upon impact with the ground.

Astalos is hyper-aggressive towards Hunters and other monsters alike. It will violently attack anything on sight regardless of whether it was aggressive or not (or even aware of Astalos' presence), and will pick fights with other monsters for seemingly no reason, even if it has no need to feed or defend its territory.

Habitat

Astalos has been seen inhabiting places like the Verdant Hills, Marshlands, Ancestral Steppe, Shrine Ruins, Flooded Forest (MHRise), and Jungle (MHRS).

In-Game Description

Monster Hunter Generations / Generations Ultimate
Known as the "Thunder Wyvern," Astalos can charge itself with electricity from the furious movements of its wings, tail and crest. In its charged state, the membrane in its wings take on a beautiful glow that only barely offsets the terrible nature of this monster.
Threat Level (危険度): ★★★★★
Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak
Large Flying Wyverns with crest-shaped organs that let them control vast amounts of electricity. Astalos vibrate these organs on their head, forked tail, and brilliant wings to charge the respective body part with electricity, yielding tremendous strength and an amplified attack range. Violent to a fault, witnesses have observed them using all their might to drive intruders from their territory.
Threat Level (危険度): ★★★★★★★
Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin
Astalos can generate high-voltage electricity within their bodies. They shudder violently to charge up whatever body part they plan to attack with. A naturally aggressive species, they fiercely defend their territories.

Notes

General Notes

  • Astalos's Japanese name, Raizekusu (ライゼクス), comes from rai (kanji: 雷 / kana: ライ) the Japanese word for "thunder" and the German word for "insect", Insekt, which is then translated into Japanese, becoming insekuto (インセクト).
    • Meanwhile the English name, Astalos, was originally Astralos, from astrapi (αστραπή) the Greek word for "lightning" and -los, a common suffix among monster names. However the name didn't roll off the tongue, and therefore the "r" in Astralos was dropped, becoming Astalos.
      • Other proposals for the name included Fulgalos and Nitralos.[1]
  • The idea for its wings to generate electricity came from crickets, which use their forewings to chirp.[2]
  • Astalos's design is heavily based on insects. Its tail comes from Dragonflies and its comb, or horn, comes from Treehoppers.[3]
  • Astalos has a compound eye texture.
  • Astalos's design was partially inspired by pterosaurs.
  • Astalos can electrically charge its head, wings or tail when attacking to increase the power of its attacks.
    • When it charges its head, its eyes will turn neon green and its horn will get an axe-like shape.
    • When it charges its wings, the webbing will turn transparent and the veins and spikes will glow bright green.
    • When it charges its tail, the "pincers" at the tip will glow green and change shape. It will also be able to inflict Paralysis with some of its tail-based attacks.
    • However, it's also more susceptible to damage and elements on the charged body parts.
  • Astalos's horn, back, and both wings can be broken and part of its tail can be severed.
    • Breaking a charged body part will make it return to normal and also cause it to drop a shiny.
    • Staggering Astalos by hitting a charged body part will also return this body part to normal.
  • Astalos recovers stamina by eating from a carcass.
    • When exhausted, Astalos will lose all body charges it has at that moment.
  • Similar to Zinogre, Astalos can be fully charged by being caught in a Shock Trap. However, Astalos can also lose its charge from Shock Traps if a part is fully charged.
  • Astalos's roar requires Earplugs to block.
  • In-game, the Astalos encountered are always male.[4]
  • Astalos can knock over hunters during its death animation, when it falls down after trying to stand back up. This deals no damage, however. (Even in an incomplete multi-monster quest)
  • Astalos was voted 45th place in the Hunters' Choice for Top Monster during Monster Hunter's 20th Anniversary.[5]

Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate

  • G-Rank Astalos gains a new attack where it plants its tail into the ground and releases an electrical blast, paralyzing those in contact with the tail and stunning those blown away by the blast. It also uses two wing slams in succession instead of only one.

  • Monster Hunter Rise

  • When enraged, Astalos' charged parts are now a neon yellow.
  • Astalos now has several attacks taken from Boltreaver Astalos, such as generating a beam of electricity from its head for a brief period of time.
  • Astalos has a Turf War with Mizutsune.
