Rey Dau

A Flying Wyvern that rules the Windward Plains as its apex predator. It has adapted to the lightning that accompanies the Sandtide, with most sightings having occurred during the storm. Its ability to discharge electricity in powerful attacks pose a threat to even the most experienced hunters.

Rey Dau is a Flying Wyvern first introduced in Monster Hunter Wilds.

Physiology

Rey Dau is a large bipedal wyvern covered in bony golden scales, as well as smaller black scales on its underbelly, joints, and wings. Unlike most other bipedal Flying Wyverns, its wings are not comprised of extended digits, instead being a single membrane similar to that of pterosaurs. Its wings additionally have bladed protrusions which are used as weapons. It has a short and vaguely serpentine head, with two rows of teeth and a pair of mandible-like protrusions on either side of its jaw, while its neck has two slits that extrude glowing blue, fin-like structures whenever it is focusing electricity. Its defining features are the large horns spread out on each side of its head; the horns on its head can be folded inwards and used to channel electricity akin to a rail gun. After harnessing electricity, its wing blades and back spikes glow bright blue with fulgurite.

Behavior and Abilities

Rey Dau is the apex predator of the Windward Plains. It has great control over lightning, appearing during thunderstorms and using the electricity in the air to channel, charge and fire massive blasts of lightning from its horns. After blasting lightning, the sand on its wings crystallizes into sharp blades of fulgurite crystal, enhancing its attacks. Rey Dau can additionally charge its horns with electricity to stab opponents like a electric spear, as well as using acrobatic aerial attacks while slicing opponents with its bladed wings.

Notes

General Notes

  • Rey Dau alludes to the Spanish word rey, meaning 'king,' symbolizing Rey Dau as the apex and ruler of a territory. The term Dau may derive from the Vietnamese word đầu, which can mean 'head' or 'leader', emphasizing a position of leadership or prominence.
  • Before its name reveal, Rey Dau was dubbed by the Western fan community as "Thor Magala," seemingly originating from youtuber Hey Jay on Rurikhan's stream of the Summer Game Fest 2024 and discussion in the stream of how it seemed to resemble Gore Magala with its horns closed and charging. This nickname was acknowledged in a demo stream on the Monster Hunter YouTube channel.
  • Before Arkveld's reveal, fans and developers alike thought that Rey Dau was the flagship of Wilds. Interesting enough, all of Rey Dau's cutscenes involves it fighting Arkveld.
  • Its horns are vulnerable to attacks after performing its railgun blasts, and focus striking them will cause a stagger.
  • Rey Dau is the only Apex Monster to be weak to multiple elements.
