Arkveld

Arkveld is a Flying Wyvern first introduced in Monster Hunter Wilds.

Physiology

Arkveld is a large quadruped monster covered in grayish white scales, white fur and armor plating. It has ram-like horns on each side of its head curving downward in a manner of tusks, a thick armored tail, a large plated lower jaw and a mouth full of sharp teeth. Its feet have two toes facing forward and backwards like zygodactyl. Similar to Berukyurosu, Arkveld's main feature are its clawed wings which have huge armored chain-like tendrils attached to them which can extend and retract at will. Unlike in Berukyurosu, where its "chains" are made out of elongated wing fingers, Arkveld's tendrils are made of two strands of tendon lined with arrays of bony structures attached to its wrists. Its wing membranes are relatively small and are also covered in white fur. Despite this, it is still capable of flight. Its body structure is similar to that of Seregios.

Behavior and Abilities

Much of Arkveld's ecology is apparently a mystery as most of its kind are said to be extinct, but so far Arkveld appears to be a powerful, aggressive and nomadic monster. It can be seen attacking and challenging other apex predators like Rey Dau and Uth Duna in other habitats seemingly to siphon their energy, which it then converts into dragon element within its body for more power.

Arkveld mainly uses its flexible wing chains to whip and strike at opponents and attack them at close range, or at a distance by extending its chain tendrils. Arkveld can grab and constrict opponents with its tendrils to pin them down before absorbing their energy, or striking them with a claw attack. Arkveld can also split these chained tendrils down the middle to create a second pair, and infuse them with dragon element to create explosive whip strikes and shockwaves. Arkveld can also retract its chain tendrils into large wingblades to smash and slash at enemies. Its tail is also flexible and extendable, which it uses to thrust at enemies behind itself.

Arkveld is surprisingly nimble and acrobatic despite its large size, able to launch acrobatic whip strikes and fast aerial attacks in battle. It will additionally ram opponents with its horns, bite them with its powerful jaws, or swipe at them with its extendable tail.

Arkveld also possesses the powerful Dragon Element. After absorbing enough energy, in which it converts to Dragon Element, it unleashes the Dragon Element from the chainwhip into the ground to create explosion or imbues the chainwhip strikes.

In-Game Description

Monster Hunter Wilds
A flying wyvern that was considered extinct according to documents left behind by the Guild. Their wings have a unique, chain-like blade that can extend and retract freely to reap their prey. They feed on elemental energy absorbed through these chainblades, and are able to convert the energy to unleash dragon element attacks.

Notes

General Notes

  • Arkveld is the flagship monster of Monster Hunter Wilds.
    • It is also, currently, the final boss of its base game High Rank storyline.
  • Arkveld is the first Functionally Extinct Species encountered in-game in the Monster Hunter series.
  • It is the only large monster in Wilds to appear in all locales as an invasive monster.
  • Arkveld has a proper turf war with Rey Dau.
  • Arkveld has an interaction with many elemental monsters where it will first topple the victim with standard attacks and then absorb its energy. Only when Arkveld begins absorbing the victim's energy will the "turf war" prompt appear.
    • Despite not being elemental monsters, it has this interaction with Guardian Doshaguma and Gore Magala. Possibly because the former being a Guardian and the latter has the Frenzy Virus.
  • Arkveld can be power clashed by blocking its bite or chainblade slams.
  • It has a pin attack where it traps the hunter with its chain whips, and slams its other wingarm upon the victim. This can be interrupted by using any slinger ammo.
    • Notably, the initial chainblade grab will drain the hunter's health.
  • It is a mystery how Arkveld is able to fly, since its wing membrane seems to be just tufts of fur.
  • Arkveld's weapons are named after the Knights of the Round Table from Arthurian mythos. The same holds true for its Guardian counterpart.
  • When powered up, Arkveld's chainblades are depowered separate from each other by attacking them; depowering one causes it to stagger, and depowering both causes an extended knock down.
  • Tempered Arkveld's chainblades will be powered up by default.
