Alatreon is an Elder Dragon introduced in Monster Hunter 3.
Appearance
Alatreon is a large quadrupedal Elder Dragon with a regal and imposing appearance, closely resembling that of a European dragon.
Its robust frame is covered in sleek, backward-facing black scales with a blade-like texture. Its chest is heavily armored with a large, spiked patch of hardened scales. The limbs are thick and powerful, ending in sharp claws, and its long tail tapers to a muscular, segmented end. Its head is characterized by a sharp, beaklike mouth and two large, serrated horns that curve outward. The wings are broad and membranous, with a pronounced skeletal structure that supports their large size. Alatreon’s scales glow in varying colors, depending on the element it is actively channeling.
Abilities
Alatreon stands above all Elder Dragons just like Fatalis,[1] and is widely considered one of the most fearsome and unforgettable challenges in the Monster Hunter universe. It is an extremely powerful monster and the master of the Elements, possessing control over all of them (Dragon, Fire, Ice, Thunder and Water). It can shoot heavy blasts of flame, breathe freezing air with sharp ice crystals, summon striking bolts of lightning, spray jets of ignitable fluid, and infuse its body with potent draconic energy. In addition to freely wielding multiple elements simultaneously, their sharp scales constantly emit elemental energy, imbuing them with different properties. Its horns are seemingly responsible for much of its control over the elements, so its powers can be temporarily weakened by breaking them, or by dealing sufficient elemental damage in turn.
In Monster Hunter World: Iceborne, it has three modes: Fire Active, Ice Active, and Dragon Active.
- In Fire Active mode, it is immune to the Fire element, resistant to Thunder and Dragon elements, moderately weak to Water, and weak to Ice.
- In Ice Active mode, it is immune to the Ice element, resistant to Water and Dragon elements, moderately weak to Thunder, and weak to Fire.
- In Dragon Active mode, it has no immunities but is resistant to Fire, Ice, Thunder, and Water elements, with only a moderate weakness to the Dragon element.
In all its modes, it can freely wield all the elements. However, in Fire Active mode, it tends to favor more the Fire element over Ice; in Ice Active mode, it prioritizes more the Ice element over Fire; and in Dragon Active mode, it uses all the elements with equal frequency.
Alatreon's immense power stands among the pinnacle of Elder Dragons and it is regarded as a living natural disaster, capable of causing storms and widespread destruction wherever it resides. Alatreon’s ultimate move, Escaton Judgment, is the peak of its destructive power. This catastrophic attack releases an immense surge of elemental energy, capable of annihilating everything in its path. Surviving this devastating onslaught requires more than just skill—it demands strategic preparation and the ability to counter Alatreon’s elemental cycles.
Behavior
Alatreon tend to be solitary and reclusive, generally residing in extreme environments isolated far from other life. They are very territorial, extremely easy to anger, and will unleash their power with reckless abandon whenever provoked. This may be the reason why no other monsters live in the Sacred Land where it usually resides.
Habitat
Alatreon can be found in the Sacred Land, a special area within the Volcano, and it presumably has access to any point within the volcano when hunting for food. It has also been sighted on Ingle Isle and even in underwater depths, within the abyssal trenches. It also ventured to the New World with the sole goal of confronting Safi'jiiva and destroy its cocoons, which is why it has been spotted in the Secluded Valley.

Notes
General Notes
- In the Wyverian language, Alatreon's name means "Dawn's Triumph".[2]
- Prior to Monster Hunter World Iceborne, Alatreon only uses on the ground Dragon-element and Fire-element attacks. When it turns blue and spends most of its time in the air (see below), Alatreon uses Ice-element and Thunder-element attacks, and if it falls on the ground, its common attacks (like its charge) will lose their usual effect (for example, the charge won't inflict Dragonblight anymore).
- Alatreon is vulnerable to Paralysis and Sleep. However, as an Elder Dragon, it never gets exhausted and isn't affected by any Traps or Meat.
- Prior to Monster Hunter World Iceborne, Alatreon is weak to Ice Element (then Water) when on the ground, and weak to Dragon Element (then Fire) when hovering in the air. It is slightly weak to Thunder when on the ground, but immune to it when in the air.
- Front claws and both horns can be broken, wings can be damaged and tail can be severed for two extra carves.
- Both horns must be broken for Skypiercers to be obtained in the rewards.
- The tail can be severed at any level of health, but this won't affect Alatreon's power.
- It is able to muster its power and energy in its horns. At that moment, the horns will be surrounded by little sparkles. After a few minutes, it will absorb those sparkles and turn blue, before hovering around the area and starting a thunder and icy rampage for some minutes. In this Flight Mode, it is difficult to deal significant damage to Alatreon. In addition, it is more aggressive and more powerful. Breaking both horns or making it stagger by focusing on the head when the horns are surrounded by sparkles will prevent Alatreon from using its true power.
- Prior to Monster Hunter World Iceborne, using Flash Bombs will make Alatreon fall onto the ground from its Flight Mode.
- During its Flight Mode (see above), Alatreon will sometimes cause wind which will make hunters fall over, much like Kushala Daora's wind barrier. This will happen during aerial charges.
- If Alatreon hits one of the two ledge walls of the Sacred Land during a charge, its horns will become stuck for a few seconds.
- At the end, it should destroy the wall, unless it is staggered. It cannot be ledged when both horns are broken.
- If Alatreon's tail is cut during Flight Mode it will glow blue instead of red even when Alatreon lands.
- Alatreon's horns begin to sparkle or turn white signaling it is ready to revert to the Flight Mode. If its head or horns take considerable damage during this time, the sparkles will disappear, postponing Alatreon's Flight Mode.
- Alatreon's roar requires HG Earplugs to block.
- Prior to Monster Hunter World Iceborne, Alatreon, Teostra, and Lunastra have the same sound effect when roaring, Alatreon also shared some sounds with Kushala Daora, including death sound.
- Alatreon was voted 10th place in the Hunters' Choice for Top Monster during Monster Hunter's 20th Anniversary.[3]
Monster Hunter 3
Monster Hunter Portable 3rd
Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate
- Alatreon entering its rage mode almost always results in it going into Flight Mode.
Monster Hunter Generations
Monster Hunter World: Iceborne
- Alatreon still retain the flight mode, which it can initiate freely regardless of Active form. There are 2 moves that initiate flight mode, "Jump-back Fireball", and "Icicle Rain Initiate". After some times, if not forced to the ground, Alatreon will use either "Flame Breath Burst" or "Draconic Dive" which ends its flight mode.
- Alatreon will emit a powerful shockwave, called "Escaton Judgment", when changing between Dragon Active to either the Fire Active or Ice Active. This shockwave deals massive damage rapidly and will almost always cause all hunters present to instantly faint. However, players can weaken this shockwave by dealing a large enough amount of elemental damage to Alatreon before it uses it, which will also knock it down. At least one elemental knockdown is required per cycle to survive the next Escaton Judgment.
- Alatreon's horns can only be broken during Dragon Active, and breaking one of them will force it to shift to the element that was previously active after the next Escaton Judgement, whilst failing to do so will cause it to shift to the opposite element. Only one horn can be broken per "cycle", although they also have a conspicuously low threshold for breaking.
- Alatreon's color scheme and the arena background changes depending on it's Active. In Fire Active, Alatreon's color shifts to orange while the backdrop is entirely burning while in it's Ice Active, it takes a blue color scheme while the backdrop is entirely devoid of fire. In it's Dragon Active, it will shift to a purple color scheme while the backdrop is burning but not as much as it's Fire Active.
- In the Special Assignments Blazing Black Twilight and Dawn's Triumph, Alatreon starts in Fire Active.
- However, the ice spikes sometimes will not violently explode or causing any damage. The cause of this is unknown.
