Akantor is a Flying Wyvern introduced in Monster Hunter Freedom 2.
Physiology
The Akantor is a massive, vaguely snapping turtle-like wyvern that dwells in magma. Akantors are covered with massive reddish black spikes and durable shells, and have both large sharp claws on their legs but also a similar structure on its tail. The Akantor's most distinctive feature aside from its fearsome spikes are the pair of dreadful tusks on its head. These tusks are both nearly as long as the entirety of the head. The underside of the Akantor is a much tanner color than the rest of its body, and is comparatively lacking in dangerous protrusions.
The Akantor is classified as a Flying Wyvern due to its evolutionary line; Akantor is no longer capable of flight, and only has small nubs left of their original wings.
Abilities
Akantors are so powerful, they can have extremely negative effects on the environment they reside in. Predator and prey flee from Akantors and only the largest wyverns and Elder Dragons even dare challenge them. With their immense physical strength, numerous body spines, enormous tusks, and powerful roars Akantors are extremely deadly foes. If all that weren't enough produced inside Akantors mouth is a highly corrosive fluid meant to break down the defenses of prey, and with its exceptionally loud roars Akantors can create a sort "sonic beam" tainted with the Dragon Element powerful enough to shoot down airships flying by.
Behavior
Akantors are highly aggressive and predatory - they are shown to be more than capable of taking down a Gravios. They are easily the apex predator of any ecosystem unfortunate enough to witness its presence, and can obliterate many monsters and hunters that dare challenge it. By virtue of its immense strength and ability to burrow through magma, not much can realistically stop an Akantor, short of an elder dragon or an experienced team of hunters. They will attack and kill almost anything on sight, often letting out a deafening roar before charging head on.
Habitat
Akantor is found in the Battleground, whilst in Monster Hunter Portable 3rd, it is fought in the Lava Canyon, and Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate, it is fought in the Ingle Isle.

Hard Core (HC) Akantor

HC Akantor has an unusual blue tint all across its body, as well as even larger tusks than before. In addition, it has a new set of attacks and movement patterns, including producing giant pillars of lava and fire as well as using its sonic roar to cover its body and cause damage to any Hunters too close.
Notes
General Notes
- Akantor's thick plating is strong enough to resist the Gravios' heat blast. This enables Akantor to defeat the Gravios in the video "Akantor Ecology."
- When weak, Akantor will limp for a few seconds, even though it can't be captured.
- Breakable parts include two spikes on the sides of its back, its chest, its two tusks, its claws on the two forelegs and its tail can be cut off.
- Akantor is less vulnerable to Dragon element while enraged.
- Throwing a Sonic Bomb into Akantor's mouth before it uses its wind blast will stun the monster and cause it to drop a shiny.
- Sonic Bombs don't work when it is in its Rage state.
- Throwing Flash Bombs at Akantor will only stun the creature for 3 to 4 seconds, a much shorter duration than for other monsters. However, this is an easy way to avoid Akantor's charge and other attacks. They are also useful in a large hunting party, where one hunter can flash Akantor repeatedly and the rest attack freely. Rotating the person with flash bombs results in very quick kill times.
- Akantor's tail can reap up to two carves when cut, much like Gravios or Monoblos.
- The Wind Tunnel will still deal a lot of damage even if the player is guarding.
- Painting Akantor and zooming into the map makes it visible when it is underground.
- All Akantor weapons have high raw damage and high affinity, but have horrible sharpness, at most green or some blue even with the skill Sharpness+1.
- Akantor's roar requires HG Earplugs to block and causes damage.
- Akantor's tremors require Tremor Res +1 to block.
- Unlike Ukanlos and Odibatorasu, Akantor's body is not exposed during its "Dig" attack. Akantor is also the only one of the three who does not have a "Jump" attack.
- Akantor was voted 44th place in the Hunters' Choice for Top Monster during Monster Hunter's 20th Anniversary.[1]
- Strangely, a previously undocumented MH4 render of Akantor without lava was shown on the results stream.
- Akantor was voted 23rd place in the 2018 poll for Frontier's Top Monster.[2]
- For whatever reason, Akantor and Tigrex are exceptions on the Frontier-only list results.
Monster Hunter Freedom Unite
Monster Hunter Portable 3rd
- Unlike in previous games, a hunter can see tremors in the ground when Akantor digs, allowing hunters to see where Akantor goes while underground.
