F-4D PEACE PHEASANT I   F-4E PEACE PHEASANT II

The F-4E PEACE PHEASANT II is an American export variant of the F-4 Phantom available to South Korea in Wargame: Red Dragon.

History

The F-4E Phantom II is a twin-engine, two-seat, supersonic multi-role fighter. The E-model, developed during the Vietnam War, addressed one of the chief drawbacks of the basic Phantom II design: it was the first model to incorporate an internal 20mm cannon. Other significant improvements to the "E" include slatted wings, APQ-120 radar, additional fuel capacity, new J79 engines, and leading-edge slots on the tailplane. The South Korean Air Force purchased former-USAF F-4E's during the 1970's under Operation PEACE PHEASANT to compliment its arsenal of F-4D's, and received over 100 of the type in total. These were used by 17th Tactical Fighter Wing by 152nd Tactical Fighter Squadron and 153rd Tactical Fighter Squadron.

Overview

Red Dragon

The F-4E PEACE PHEASANT II is a precision-strike platform available to South Korean and NATO-allied decks. In place of the bombs carried by the F-4D, the F-4E carries four AGM-65B Maverick missiles, and a 20mm Vulcan cannon. The AGM-65B is an Electro-Optical guided anti-tank missile with fair accuracy and exceptional armor penetration. The addition of the 20mm Vulcan allows the F-4E to strafe the target it is prosecuting with Mavericks (if the missile fails to destroy its target), to defend itself against fighters, or to attack helicopters.

The drawbacks of the F-4E are fairly significant considering its vehicle-hunting role: namely that it carries modest ECM and no short-range missiles to help it fight off enemy aircraft. The moderate rated ECM leaves the F-4E vulnerable to attack by long-range radar guided missiles, and so to be used effectively, not only should a fighter escort be considered, but destruction of enemy Integrated Air Defense Systems (IADS) in the area the F-4E is operating is a must. This is somewhat offset by its relatively inexpensive cost compared other CAS platforms like the A-10, and the AGM-65B's fire and forget characteristics which allow the type to fire, then break away or be evac'd as the missile is in flight, leaving the F-4E less exposed to return fire.
