The F-4D PEACE PHEASANT I is an American export variant of the F-4 Phantom available to South Korea in Wargame: Red Dragon.
History
The F-4D Phantom II is a twin-engine, two-seat, supersonic multi-role fighter. The F-4D is improved from the basic F-4C Phantom II used by the USAF, fitted with updated avionics, the APQ-109 radar, and first flown in 1965. It does not carry an internal cannon. The type was ordered by South Korea in the late 1960's under the PEACE SPECTATOR program. Initially, 18 were delivered, followed by another 18 in 1972 in exchange for 36 F-5A Freedom Fighters to South Vietnam. In total, 96 F-4D's were delivered to the South Korean Air Force. These were used by 11th Tactical Fighter Wing with 110th Tactical Fighter Squadron and 151th Tactical Fighter Squadron.
Overview
Red Dragon
The F-4D PEACE PHEASANT I is South Korea's high-speed medium bomber. Carrying twenty five 227kg Mk. 82 bombs, the F-4D can strike powerfully at enemy infantry and lightly or moderately armored vehicles. The Mk. 82 does not have the power of the heavier Mk. 83 or truly devastating Mk. 84, but with an HE rating of 10, is powerful enough to deal with transports and support vehicles, as well as troops. The F-4D has a good top speed, and so spends minimal time in the coverage of enemy Integrated Air Defense Systems (IADS).
The F-4D does have several drawbacks, however. Its powerful strike capability comes at a price (120 points per aircraft), it carries poor ECM, and no air-to-air compliment to defend itself against enemy fighters. It is vulnerable to long- and short-range SAMs and AAMs, and a fighter escort is a must if the aircraft is to successfully attack its target.
