The BTR-T is a prototype Soviet Infantry Fighting Vehicle that appears in Wargame: Red Dragon. It is a mechanized transport available exclusively to Soviet Engineer squads.
History
Built on a T-55 chassis, the BTR-T is a very heavily-armored APC built based on lessons learned during the First Chechen War, where lighter APCs and IFVs like the BTR-80 and BMP-2 were decimated en masse during urban combat by insurgents with shoulder-fired RPG-7s and other man-portable anti-tank weapons. Using the same logic used to create the BMPT Terminator, the engineers at Omsk Transmash decided to build a heavily-armored IFV with built-in reactive armor to defeat shaped charges and with primary armament possessing a high angle of elevation for engaging targets at a higher level in an urban environment. The decision to use a T-55 chassis was made for two reasons, the first being as a cost-cutting measure and the second being the prospect of selling it as a conversion for T-55s still in service abroad, following the example of Israel's Achzarit IFV from the late 1980s. However, no export orders were obtained and in any case only a handful were built for the Russian Federation.
Overview
Available to Sapery ('85) only.
BTR-T is armed with an automatic grenade launcher and a heavy machine gun. The relatively heavy armour of the BTR-T, coupled with its specialised anti-infantry weapons, makes this unit very effective in supporting Soviet infantry units.
