2S15 Norov

The 2S15 Norov (Russian: Норов, meaning "Vice") is a prototype Soviet Tank Destroyer that first appears in Wargame: AirLand Battle.

History

In the 1970s, the Soviet Union planned a new generation of anti-tank guns, which required self-propelled anti-tank guns to combine mobility, counterattacking firepower and accuracy, allowing them to hit targets at considerable distances from their firing positions. With these in mind, a decision was made by the USSR military–industrial complex on May 17, 1976, to give the task of designing a lightweight 100mm self-propelled anti-tank gun to a group of enterprises. The self-propelled gun was supposed to include an automatic radar fire control system, and was given the code name "Norov".

The 2S15 Norov was planned to be the Corp level Anti-tank asset, and the vehicle was based on the 2S1 Gvozdika. The entire project being headed by the Yurga Machine-Building Plant, while the automatic radar fire control system would be built by the Tula-based Strela design bureau. The start of state tests was scheduled for 1979, and the design work was completed by the end of 1977. Prototypes of the 2S15 would be built by KB Arsenal in Leningrad, but production did not finish before the deadline, which delayed the presentation of the gun to 1981, when the guns again failed to present themselves.

A new smoothbore gun was developed for Norov, the basis for which was probably the 2A29 / MT-12 Rapier cannon. It differed from the towed gun by the presence of an ejector, but retained the characteristic muzzle brake and other units. The self-propelled gun could use unitary shots of existing types and did not have automatic loading. The exact characteristics of the gun for the 2S15 have not been published, but it can be assumed that the parameters are close to the Rapier.[1]

Tests of three experienced 2S15 Norov began in 1983, where problems and shortcomings were discovered, and were completed in 1985 without any recommendation for adoption and production launch. However, by that time, with the introduction of new 3rd generation models of tanks (like Leopard 2), the 100mm gun proved to be of little use against their intended targets. The Norov project was seen as unpromising, and was shut down by the USSR military-industrial complex in December 1985. Like their BTR-70 Zhalo counterparts, 2S15 Norov never saw active service.

Overview

Red Dragon

The biggest weakness of the 2S15 Norov is the 2100 meters Range of its main gun, which is clearly fatal for tank destroyers; And the AP Power of 13 cannot deal with 65-point tanks like M1 Abrams and Chieftain Mk.10. In fact, the stats of 2A15 in-game can be said to be equivalent (if not worse) to the L7A3 from 40-point Leopard 1A4. Therefore, 2S15 lacks cost-effectiveness and competitiveness when assuming its designated role.

For regular fire support tasks, BTR-70 Zhalo would do better.
