The BMD-2 is an airborne infantry fighting vehicle that appears Wargame: Red Dragon for the Soviet Union.
History
The BMD-2 is a Soviet airborne infantry fighting vehicle, introduced in 1985. It is a variant of BMD-1 with a new turret and some changes done to the hull. BMD stands for Boyevaya Mashina Desanta (Боевая Машина Десанта, literally "Airborne Combat Vehicle"). It was developed as a replacement of BMD-1 but it failed to replace it completely because of a downfall of Soviet economy in 1980s. NATO gave it the designation BMD M1981/1.
After the Soviet-Afghan war, BMD-1 had issues with it mostly anti-tank weapons system so when Afghanistan based formation gotten BMP-2 with its autocannon. So BMD-1 was modified to carry a similar weapon system to the BMP-2.
Ingame
In a similar fashion to BMP-2, the BMD-2 ditches the 73mm main gun in favour of the 30mm cannon which is more effective against infantry and also gives it better abilities to engage helicopters than BMD-1D and also a better and more accurate ATGM-Even so, one should be aware that the cannon is only powerful enough to engage other IFVs/APCs, infantries, and helicopters when caught by surprise.
Use it as one would use an IFV-Support your infantry in advancing to enemies from outside enemy RPG range, and always avoid engaging tanks head-on at all costs. Support in conjunction with friendly tanks or preferably gunships is recommended
