BMPT

The BMPT is a prototype Soviet Fire Support Vehicle that first appears in Wargame: AirLand Battle.

History

The Wargame's BMPT is based on a Soviet prototype - Object 782, it was developed in the late 1980s under a concept of "mountain tank" based on the experiences in Afghanistan, which is different from the real-life Russian BMPT, Object 199.

Historically, the Object 782 project lost to another prototype vehicle, Object 781, in initial testing, and the project was cancelled as a result. From this perspective, it is strange that Object 782 has become the official BMPT in the game. The Year 1980 is also kind of too early for the Objects.[1]

Although the chassis of the Object 782 is based on a heavily modified T-72B, its overall design and equipment are very similar to the BMP-3, which may also be the reason for its failure. However, the armament of Object 782 is actually much abundant than in the game: its has 50 rounds for the 2A70, including up to 4 Bastion guided missiles (17 AP Power in-game); The number of grenade launchers is 2, and it was also equipped with several 7.62mm PKTs.[2][3]

The testing continued until changes of domestic politics in 1990. These two projects were terminated due to the lack of funding, but the prototypes were send to museum.

Overview

The BMPT is specialised towards anti-infantry combat at short, medium and somehow long range. The unit's main gun outranges many ATGMs, and all other types of infantry. Its autocannon is useful against both enemy IFVs and helicopters, and its grenade launcher will stun and destroy any infantry unit that gets close enough to be a threat to the BMPT. It should be noted that its three weapons cannot fire simultaneously, so it is possible to consider to turn off 2A70 during forest combats.

On the other hand, BMPT only issues minimum anti-armor capabilities (2A72), so it cannot be deployed individually.
