OSCAR

OSCAR (奧斯卡) is a Mandarin Chinese vocal developed and distributed by VOICEMITH, a planning team under E-CAPSULE Co. Ltd., and released as an AI voice database for Synthesizer V Studio in December 2023. He was originally released for the UTAU engine in August 2016.

He is voiced by Myles, a Taiwanese voice actor, musician, and singer.^[2]

Concept

OSCAR was described to have a standard "big boy" personality, meaning that he believes he is mature enough to take care of himself. He is a simple-minded and carefree person with an eagerness to help others. He loves singing, sharing, and his older sister JOAN. He was noted to have the "FIRE" attribute, meaning that once the magic was integrated into his voice, it would make people feel a sunshine-like warmth, doubling their courage.

He is regarded as one of XIA YU YAO's partners after the siblings met her in a small town where she was resting at. After passing her ability test, her instructor asked her to leave and explore the world to train herself, broaden her horizons, and find other people with special abilities. OSCAR and JOAN were drawn to YU YAO's singing due to her ability to attract people with similar skills to her own and they joined her on her adventures. VOICEMITH encouraged fans to let the trio sing countless wonderful, moving songs and to walk into their world together.^[3]

Around the release of his Synthesizer V, OSCAR's age was changed to 18. The UTAU version of his page remains accessible via manually entering the URL and still lists the age of 16.^[4][5][6]

Etymology

No official information was released regarding why the name "OSCAR" was chosen. The name "Oscar" is of Irish origins meaning "deer friend", "deer-loving one", or "friend of the deer". Broken down, Old Irish "oss" means "deer" and "carae" means "friend". The name stemmed from the Irish mythology character, Oscar, the grandson of Fionn mac Cumhaill, and his descent from his grandmother Sadhbh, who was changed into the form of a deer.^[7][8]

His name is written phonetically in Traditional Chinese as "奧斯卡" and Simplified Chinese as "奥斯卡"(Àosīkǎ).

OSCAR AI reuses the "neo" design from August 2019. During the design process, VOICEMITH asked illustrator Jinko to refer to the original UTAU character biography and make modifications to create a brand new image of OSCAR.^[9] In this design, he has slightly curly ginger hair and emerald green eyes. He wears a sleeveless top with a jacket over it, giving the appearance of a white button-down shirt and vest. The upper half of his top is white and the lower is dark brown with gold vertical stripes. The hem of his top is cut at a forty-five-degree angle and adorned with thin gold trim. His crimson blazer-style jacket cuts off about mid-torso with white cuffed three-quarter sleeves bearing a gold stripe from the shoulder to the edge of the cuffs. The jacket's interior is lined with gold fabric. He wears a complicated dark brown leather belt over his white form-fitting pants. This belt is tied around his waist with one attachment on either side that rests tightly against his front and hips, connecting to a belt loop in the back. A gold chain hangs from the front of the belt and crosses behind to the other side. Around his upper right thigh is a dark brown band with gold trim and studs. His boots are knee-high black lace-ups. His accessories included a gold earring on his left ear with a ruby stud and a gold sun (his signature icon) dangling from it, a red and black headset with his icon, dark brown fingerless gloves with a gold trim, a crimson clip-on tie with his icon, a gold and ruby broach-like tie clip, and a brown and gold band on either wrist, exactly like the one on his thigh.

For the outer sleeve of the physical box, GENE was commissioned to have OSCAR featured in a dazzling performance on stage. It was noted that despite the slight differences from the original concept, this was done intentionally to highlight the character even more.^[10][11] This design was later labelled as the "Standard" edition's illustration, while the original key art was used for the "Deluxe" edition.

Marketing

As an UTAU character, OSCAR was marketed as part of the VOICEMITH series and was regarded as one of XIA YU YAO's partners. He received official merchandise, such as albums, and digital stickers.^{[13][14][15][16]} In September 2019, OSCAR neo launched with operations similar to the concept of VTubers. His neo design was done by Jinko and he had two official uploads available: "OSCAR neo Debut!" and "What!! Singing such a dirty song?!" (featuring LanCee).

On March 20, 2023, official Twitter and YouTube accounts were announced for OSCAR.^[17] On August 15, in celebration of reaching 150,000 NTD during OSCAR's voice database crowdfund, computer and phone wallpapers of him by LLG, Jinko, and GENE were distributed.^[18]
