The stars in the sky are asleep
Leaving the wind to run on the ground
It runs to the woods to play with the leaves
The shade rustles and laughs as it moves through
He slips to the river and calls the spring to play
It takes the spring with it and leaps down from the rocky moss

A leaf leaves the branch
Carrying the wind's song far away
A drop of spring water pops out of the stream
And runs down the hill with the wind's song
—Introduction prior to debut; shared with Yun Quan[2][3]

Lin Lai (Simplified Chinese: 林籁; Traditional Chinese: 林籟) is a Mandarin Chinese vocal developed and distributed by Dreamtonics Co., Ltd., and released as an AI voice database for Synthesizer V Studio in June 2023. In February 2025, Lin Lai was announced to be receiving an update for the also-upcoming Synthesizer V Studio 2 engine, introduced as Lin Lai 2, and was announced to be released simultaneously alongside the new editor in March 2025.[4][5]

His voice provider has not been revealed.

Concept

Like previous Dreamtonics vocals before him, Lin Lai was intended to be treated as an official voice database or an indispensable "reference-level" type of singing voice, representing Dreamtonics's brand quality.

Lin Lai was designed as one of Dreamtonics's featured vocalists created with the impression of a child.

Etymology

"Lin" (林; Lín) means "forest", "grove", or "woods", while "lai" (籁; Lài) means "sound" or "noise" and is also an ancient wind instrument made with bamboo pipes. Combined with Yun Quan, the names come from the Chinese idiom "Lín Lài Quán Yùn" (林籁泉韵), which refers to the natural sound of the wind blowing in the woods and the spring lapping against the rocks, expressing the naturalness and beauty of the sound, possibly inferring the idea of giving the singers the impression and expectation of naturalness and innocence.[6]

Lin Lai's name is rendered in kana as "リン・ライ".

Appearance

Like previous Dreamtonics vocals, rather than having an official human-like avatar, Lin Lai is represented by an abstract symbol, two letter "L"s, which are drawn from the first letters per Chinese character of his name in romanization. The letters are light green in color with hints of white and lighter shades of green, the scheme possibly chosen to reference the forest due to his name's meaning. The "L"s are rectangular in shape and the second "L" is shorter than the first. Characterization is left to the song producers themselves rather than the product, so Lin Lai is open to any form of visual interpretation, allowing the producer to decide what they would like him to look like.

Additional Information

Marketing

Like previous Dreamtonics vocals, Lin Lai was treated as an official or standard vocal for the engine, where he could potentially be found in demonstrations of Synthesizer V Studio and its AI capabilities. This also meant that he would be among the first vocals to be equipped with the latest engine updates. Along with Yun Quan, Lin Lai was one of Dreamtonics's first child vocalists. As a first for the Dreamtonics vocals, they were available for purchase individually or as a dual back (exclusive to the Dreamtonics Taobao shop).[7]

On August 2, 2023, Dreamtonics announced that Lin Lai had his own artist association profile on NetEase Music. Creators can use the profile to add to their published songs, providing a more unified retrieval method and a higher exposure rate for the works. Dreamtonics would provide assistance services to creators at no charge and would not obtain any income belonging to the artist when associating their works with the singer profiles. Based on NetEase Music's policies, creators needed to provide relevant proof of purchase to NetEase Music's customer service in order to associate a virtual singer with their works, thus, screenshots of receipts would need to be prepared in advance. NetEase Music's customer service would then confirm the request and forward it to Dreamtonics, who would approve the requests within five business days of receiving them.[8]

  1. In an interview with Vocaloid News.net, Kanru Hua said that a contract was signed with Eleanor Forte's voice provider to prevent disclosure of any personal information. Considering the fact that Lin Lai is original to Synth V, unlike AiKO and Yamine Renri, and also considering the fact that Lin Lai was voiced by a child or minor at the time, it is assumed that a similar contract was signed with the legal guardians of Lin Lai's VP as well.
