GALENAIA (pronounced phonetically as "[g a l e n a y a]")[1] is a Spanish vocal developed and distributed by Eclipsed Sounds, LLC, which was released as an AI voice database for Synthesizer V Studio 2 software. She is the second vocal to be teased as part of Eclipsed Sounds' "Phase 2" of specialized voice databases, dubbed the Tone Chroma series.

Her voice provider is Colombian operatic soprano Laura Gómez.

Concept

Awoken as from a pleasant dream. An Envoy made for perfection.

GALENAIA, The Muse, shines brightly as the Lunarian Opera House's star soprano - but her love for the stage awakens a new fire inside her: the desire to know more than just the memories of a singer from long ago and the beauty of the spotlight.
—GALENAIA's blurb, via Eclipsed Sounds' website

GALENAIA, nicknamed as "The Muse" on the Tone Chroma teaser website, is described as "an elegant operatic vocal designed primarily for classical usage". Her codename is V-01, and her theme color is violet, whose wavelength is given as 400 nm according to lightwave physics; this wavelength, along with the codename, are neatly incorporated into GALENAIA's logo.[1]

Etymology

While an official meaning for the name "GALENAIA" has not been revealed, the name comes from Greek origins and is a derivative of the name "Galene", the name of a minor goddess in ancient Greek mythology who personifies calm seas. The name Galenaia comes from a mention by the Greek tragedian Euripides as "Galaneia" (Galênaiê) as a daughter of the god Pontus,[2] also referred by the Greek poet Callimachus as "Galenaia".[3] Her name may also derive from the Spanish word "galena", derived from the Latin word galēna, which is a soft blue-grey mineral composed of lead sulfide and a major industrial source of lead.[4]

In English, the first part of her name "gale" comes from Old Norse origins and is derived from the word "galinn", meaning "mad", "frantic", or "bewitched", though can also stem from the Proto-Germanic past participle of the word galaną or galanaz meaning "to shout" or "to sing".[5] The word also carries two meanings: in meteorology, a gale may refer to a very strong wind; however, in terms of sound, a gale may refer to a noisy outburst, such as "a gale of laughter filled the room".[6]

"Naia" is a feminine name of Basque or Euskara language (spoken in the Pyrenees regions of Spain and France) and means "wave" or "sea foam".[7]

GALENAIA's character status
Impact
Initial reactions to GALENAIA were mostly positive upon her revelation with many fans excited for a new native Spanish voice database, taking note of her realism and opera-capable vocals, while also comparing her capabilities to that of the VOCALOID2 voicebank Prima and former Synthesizer V Studio databases such as Feng Yi and Cheng Xiao, who also specialize in Peking opera style-specific vocals. Other listeners noted concerns of GALENAIA being limited to only one specific genre of music and were concerned of her flexibility in other genres, such as pop. Other reactions concerned ranging from there being a lack of native Spanish vocalists for Synthesizer V Studio that would be useful for more pop-centric genres, with mention of SAROS being the only other vocal with a Spanish dataset, noting that GALENAIA was aimed at a much more niche genre. In addition, some listeners also noted it was difficult to decipher the exact language GALENAIA was singing in her introduction demonstration, some even believing it to be English, Latin or Italian, due to perceived issues with her pronunciation and the mixing of the vocals. It was later confirmed on the official Eclipsed Sounds Tone Chroma website that her native language was Spanish.
