JOAN (蕎安; Qiáo'ān) is a Mandarin Chinese vocalist developed for the UTAU program by E-CAPSULE Co. Ltd.. She and OSCAR were the second and third crafts released simultaneously in the VOICEMITH series. She was later released as AI voice libraries for ACE Studio.

Concept

According to her character page, JOAN is the type of person who has a full sense of justice and is a rational thinker. Once a decision has been made, it will not change. She takes good care of her younger brother OSCAR. She was noted to have an "ICE" attribute, meaning that once the magic was integrated into her voice, it can calm irrational and agitated people, improving their concentration.

Etymology

No official information was released regarding why the name "JOAN" was chosen. The name "Joan" is the Medieval English form of "Johanne" and derived from Greek via Latin "Iohanna" and "Ioannes". It was usually the English feminine form of "John" in the Middle Ages. It was a common name among European royalty.[1] Its ultimate origin is from the Hebrew "Yohanan" (יוֹחָנָן), with its meaning being "The Lord is gracious".[2]

Her name is written phonetically in Chinese as "蕎安" (Qiáo'ān). According to her character page, her friends nicknamed her "Goddess" (女神; Nǚshén).

Relations

  • XIA YU YAO (夏語遙) - fellow female VOICEMITH vocalist, themed after "WIND". According to the lore that was posted to the official website when OSCAR and JOAN were released, YU YAO had met them in a small town where she was resting. The pair were drawn to her singing due to her ability to attract people with similar skills to her own, and they joined her on her adventures. VOICEMITH invited fans to let the trio sing countless wonderful and moving songs and to walk into their world together.[3] JOAN was regarded as one of her partners.

History

2016

On July 23, 2016, the name of a previously revealed male vocal was revealed to be "OSCAR" and a silhouette was shown along with a final test of the voicebank before being released to the public. This time, he was also accompanied by an unnamed female voicebank and silhouette.[5] On August 4, it was announced that JOAN and her younger brother, OSCAR, were a new female and male pair of vocals and were part of "J&O". They were said to be XIA YU YAO's new partners. They both released with Mandarin Chinese voicebanks. Shortly after release, the official webpage was updated due to an issue with the downloadable content.[6]

On August 16, Voicemith announced an update on the website and sound libraries based on suggestions from fans. The libraries were divided into three different packages: Inside, Outside, and a bundle featuring both. The reason for the division was due to the large file volume when downloading the bundle pack, so separating them may be suitable for users who prefer smaller sizes or to choose which version they'd rather use. In addition, the plug-in installer was removed as it was often mistaken to be detected as malicious content. It was replaced with a manual installation.[7]

2019

On August 9, 2019, OSCAR "neo" was announced, giving him a new appearance by Jinko, which would be revealed at a later date, and a different way of operation: this version of him did not use a new sound library but featured the voice of his voice provider, Myers, singing and speaking as OSCAR. The UTAU voicebanks were still available for use and it was confirmed that they would not be removed. A new library may be launched later on if better speech synthesis technology was available. A 3D model was also announced and was confirmed to be created by Hua An. It was noted that despite that OSCAR and JOAN were released together as a pair of siblings, this time, VOICEMITH wanted to release OSCAR neo first. JOAN neo would be expected to be in production in the future.[8]

2020

On August 6, 2020, it was announced that OSCAR and JOAN had separate web pages on the VOICEMITH website. JOAN neo's design was finally revealed and was also confirmed to have been illustrated by Jinko. However, JOAN neo did not seem to have the same functions as OSCAR neo as his original operations seemed to have ceased. It was possible that it was released as an optional promotional design instead.[9]

2022

On May 31, 2022, after XIA YU YAO's AI voice library production crowdfund launched, a fan asked if there would be AI voice libraries for the other VOICEMITH voice synthesizer characters (including ZETA, a DeepVocal library released in June 2020). The company replied "Possibly but not this year".[10]

2023

Some time after the release of XIA YU YAO's Synthesizer V AI library, VOICEMITH's website was modified to no longer include the other voice synthesizer characters. There was no announcement regarding the change to the website nor was a reason provided.[11]

At some point, JOAN's UTAU voicebanks were taken down on Google Drive, but she was still obtainable via ASUS WebStorage.

2024

On May 10, 2024, it was announced that all UTAU and DeepVocal voicebanks produced by VOICEMITH would cease distribution on May 24. Free redistribution from other parties would not be prohibited, but selling the voicebanks was forbidden. VOICEMITH would also not assume any liabilities for any losses that may occur to users during these processes. The UTAU voicebanks of XIA YU YAO, OSCAR, and JOAN, as well as the DeepVocal voice for ZETA, were officially replaced with their ACE Virtual Singer AI versions due to the latter's intention of being faithful recreations of the original voicebanks.[12]

Note: If these clauses are accepted, then usage of the voicebank and the character are allowed by the company. If they are not accepted, then their usage is prohibited. The company is not responsible in case of liabilities for misuse or copyright violations. If any of these rules are broken, the company has the right to take legal action against the person (according to Taiwanese law) or terminate its services in any moment.[13][14]

  • Company must be first contacted for any for-profit usage prior to release (application for voice usage and image usage are separate).
  • Neither the voicebanks nor the illustrations can be modified (for the latter, exceptions are made for scaling and rotation), nor can works based on such modifications be published.
  • They cannot be used in a way that infringes on copyrights, nor with offensive content (crime, hate speech, etc.).
  • They cannot be used for political campaigns.
  • The voicebank cannot be redistributed.
  • In case of publishing sensitive or graphic content, a warning must be put in place. (Example: "This work contains “XXXX”; viewer/listener discretion is advised.") This applies to:
    • Illustrations containing any degree of nudity or suggestive in nature.
    • Any criminal act (even if simulated).
    • Suicide (including mentions of it; same thing from above applies.)
    • Gore, blood, cruelty, or any similar type of material; if it's strong or can be sensitive to or hard-to-accept for adults.
    • Drugs.
    • BDSM.
    • Fetishes.
    • Abuse.
    • Incest.
  • Cosplay of the character is allowed.
  • Her clothes can be changed.
  • She can be used for holidays such as Christmas, New Year, St. Valentine, etc.

Marketing

In September 2019, OSCAR neo launched with operations similar to the concept of VTubers. His neo design was done by Jinko. JOAN neo was expected to function similarly but her design was not released until August 2020, and by then, OSCAR neo's original operations seemed to have ceased, possibly deeming both designs as optional promotional material. On April 23, OSCAR and JOAN had their own official stickers available via VOICEMITH's website.[15]

On August 6, 2020, OSCAR and JOAN's first official album, "HAPPINESS TRILOGY", was revealed and set for pre-order on August 11.[16][17] Related goods were shown on August 24.[18] It was officially released on September 17.[19]
