Appearance

The Ifrit is a massive creature, many times larger than individuals like Sonic. He has a vaguely avian shape, possessing a long neck, two large wings and two smaller wings, and a tail. Most of his skin is a reddish brown color, while the rest is coated in either yellow, rock-like armor or lava that perpetually emits flames. His head has two curled horns on either side, and his eyes glow bright red.

History

Past

Little is known about the Ifrit's past. He was the cause of the utter destruction of his own dimension, which became known as the Chaotic Inferno.[2][3] At some point, at least fifty years ago, Professor Gerald Robotnik conducted some extent of research on the Ifrit and his home dimension, which he documented in various files.[1] From the writing's chaotic and frenzied style, it can be assumed that Gerald was in a state of high distress while conducting this research.[3]

Sonic Rivals 2

In Sonic Rivals 2, Eggman Nega discovered pages from Gerald Robotnik's journal that explained the Ifrit's power to destroy the world. Plotting to free him from the Chaotic Inferno and feed him Chao to make him invincible,[4] Nega secretly hired Rouge the Bat to get him the seven Chaos Emeralds to open the portal to the creature's dimension.[1][5] Despite interference from Sonic and friends, Dr. Eggman, and Metal Sonic, Nega was eventually successful in opening the portal with only six Emeralds at Mystic Haunt Zone. Nega apparently entrusted Metal Sonic 3.0 with entering the portal to awaken the Ifrit and bring him to Sonic's world, but in reality, Nega only used Metal Sonic 3.0 as a distraction while he awakened the Ifrit himself.[6][7]

The Ifrit was confronted in the Chaotic Inferno by those seeking to stop Eggman Nega: Sonic and Tails, Shadow and Metal Sonic, Knuckles and Rouge, and Silver and Espio. The fight began 5000 meters in the sky, and the Ifrit used mind control to enslave Tails/Sonic and Rouge/Knuckles into his servants, with them aiding him in the battle. Fortunately, the beast was defeated, falling a great height and exploding in the distance. Thanks to Shadow and Metal Sonic's efforts, the portal leading to Sonic's dimension was sealed, leaving the Ifrit and Eggman Nega trapped in the Chaotic Inferno.

Powers and abilities

Sonic Rivals 2 mind controlled Tails

Said to possess the very power of destruction,[8] the Ifrit is a powerful creature, capable of destroying entire dimensions if left unchecked.[9] Fitting his appearance, the beast boasts many fire-based attacks, including the ability to spew fire breath or giant fireballs. He can also achieve flight thanks to his wings, and possesses super strength, being able to launch rock platforms several thousand meters into the air. Additionally, the Ifrit's power is said to increase by consuming Chao alive, allowing him to become invincible.[10] Since this never occurs, the true extent of the Ifrit's power is unknown.

The Ifrit holds the power to bind one's soul;[8] in other words, he is capable of controlling minds. This can enslave people and force them to treat him as their "master". This ability is powerful enough to subjugate even strong-willed individuals such as Sonic himself (who has been able to resist the mind-control of others such as Dark Gaia),[11] though it is noted that said victims can momentarily regain control of themselves.[12]

— Loading screen description, Sonic Rivals 2

The Ifrit is the sixth and final boss of Sonic Rivals 2. He is fought at Chaotic Inferno Zone Act 4 and can be fought by any of the game's eight playable characters.

Boss guide

Like the prequel's final boss, only the player's character can damage the Ifrit and he requires eight hits to be defeated. There is no timer on the fight but rather, the top-right corner of the screen displays a height counter (signifying where the fight is located at) which decreases from 5000 meters over the course of the battle. If the Ifrit is not defeated before the height reaches zero, the player will fail the stage, effectively requiring the player to defeat the Ifrit within a varied time limit.

The fight first consists of a free-falling phase, though the player and their rival are still able to move left or right and perform the Homing Attack. Trails of Rings appear in a vertical orientation. The Ifrit will fly into the background and attack by spitting fireballs that affect either the left or right side of the screen. After a few waves, the Ifrit will roar and then quickly swoop into the characters; if the player succeeds a QTE button prompt before the Ifrit's attack connects, the player's character will automatically attack the incoming Ifrit, scoring a hit while transitioning to the next phase of the fight. The required button(s) can be either Cross/Circle. If the player does not hit, causing the Ifrit's attack to connect, the Ifrit will either swoop again or restart his attack pattern with fireballs.

After hitting the Ifrit during the first phase, the fight transitions to the second phase where both characters stand on the Ifrit's lower body and can utilize all regular actions. Here, the height decreases at a lower rate, prolonging the time limit to defeat the Ifrit. The Ifrit will then attack by bringing his head down in one of three positions or breathing fire for a short while, which can cause Rings to appear. Occasionally, the Ifrit may also simply slam his head onto his body. The player can attack the Ifrit's head while he is attacking, though this will not count as a hit required to defeat the Ifrit. However, the head needs to be attacked three times in this way which, by doing so, the Ifrit will be stunned, dropping his head to the ground for a brief period. Attacking the Ifrit's head while he is stunned will finally damage him. After two hits, the first phase of the battle will repeat, until the Ifrit sustains enough hits and is defeated.

Trivia

  • If a character respawns during the first phase due to being hit by the Ifrit's attacks while having no Rings, they will fall below the screen and as they respawn, they appear on a platform, then automatically jump off and free-fall.
  • In the boss fight, the player's rival is highlighted by a green orb (regardless of mode), likely to signify that the rival is being mind-controlled by the Ifrit.
  • If the player does not defeat the Ifrit in time, both characters will still land on top of a ruined building (which is also done when the player defeats the Ifrit) but the Ifrit remains airborne and both characters display their losing animations.
  • In the first phase, the height counter decreases at a rate of approximately 1000 meters per minute. Given that the initial height value at the start of the level is 5000 meters, this effectively causes the player to fail the stage at a minimum (in-game) time of 5 minutes if they do not hit the Ifrit at all. In the second phase, the decreasing height counter's rate is halved compared to the first phase (approximately 500 meters per minute).

Ifrit profile

In the Sonic the Hedgehog comic series and its spin-offs published by Archie Comics, the Ifrit appeared in the Sonic Free Comic Book Day 2015. After suffering his previous defeat in Sonic Rivals 2, he apparently survived and later made his way to Sonic's World proper through a Genesis Portal, but was returned to his domain by Sonic and Silver.

Etymology

The Ifrit's name comes from a supernatural creature in Islam, the Ifrit (عفريت 'iifrit). They are usually a powerful type of jinn that hail from the underworld.

Trivia

  • The Ifrit is very similar to Iblis from Sonic the Hedgehog (2006). Both are giant fire creatures, both are named after powerful demons from Islamic Knowledge (even starting with the same letter), both dwell in the burning wreckage of cities (Chaotic Inferno and Crisis City, respectively), and both threaten to destroy Silver's future.
  • The Ifrit shares his inspiration with the Ifrit Golem from Sonic and the Secret Rings, and both beings are associated with fire and lava. Coincidentally, they both debuted in games from the same year, 2007.
  • The Ifrit is the only being in the Sonic the Hedgehog series who has been able to manipulate Sonic's mind.
