Bearanger

You wanna get nuts?! Let's get nuts!

— Bearanger, Sonic the Hedgehog: Tails' 30th Anniversary Special

Bearanger[1] (ベアンジャ[2] Beanja?) is a character that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. He is an anthropomorphic bear who acts as a member of the Witchcarters and rides around in his Bullet Vehicle for combat.

History

Tails' Skypatrol

Along with Hocke-Wulf and Carrottia, Bearanger was one of three henchmen of Witchcart, who was threatening to transform every inhabitant of the island into crystal. He was defeated by Miles "Tails" Prower.

Personality

This snarling, foul-tempered foe throws explosives from his shark-faced rocket.

— Description, Sonic the Hedgehog Encyclo-speed-ia

Bearanger has been described as snarling and foul-tempered.[3]

In the IDW comics, Bearanger is short-tempered, impatient, and has a habit of using minced oaths, such as “Rassa-frassin’”, “Garsarnit”, and “Galsarn”. In spite of this, he is the hardest working of the Witchcarters, as he puts in the most effort to catch the Flickies, is the only one of the three to try to attack Sonic once he comes running in, and openly chides his coworkers for being "useless".

He is the most straightforward with his victims, as he simply shouts at the Flickies line to up into a bag without trying to toy with them (as the other Witchcarters, and even Witchcart herself, do). He is also quite prideful, or at the very least demands respect, getting angry at Tails for cheaply attacking him from behind even though the attack itself hardly affected him.

In spite of his gruffness and temper, Bearanger fears his boss, Witchcart, and will quickly obey her orders when she gets angry.

Battle

Bearanger is the second boss in the game and is fought at the end of Ruin Wood. He pilots a small, light-blue rocket with a shark's face painted on it.

Boss guide

During the fight, he throws three small bombs at Tails at a time. Destroying each bomb gives a hundred points to the player. Like most other bosses in the game, the player has to land twenty hits or toss Bearanger into the ground four times to defeat him.

Bearanger would come to Flicky Island with Witchcart and the other Witchcarters. After they conquered the island, they went to work to capture the native Flickies so Witchcart could use them for her diabolical plans, with Bearanger putting the most effort into it. When Sonic appeared, Bearanger alone impulsively went to fight him, but was easily overwhelmed by the hedgehog. Once Sonic was captured when Witchcart zapped him from behind with her wand, she then ordered Bearanger and his cohorts to get back to work, with Bearanger flying off to Gene Gadget.

In Gene Gadget, Bearanger would corral Flickies into a bag, before Tails tried to land a cheap Spin Jump, much like Sonic did before. Not only did it hardly affect Bearanger, but the lack of respect greatly infuriated him, leading to him boarding his ship to attack Tails. After Bearanger began throwing mines at him, the Flickies started to peck the bear en masse, making him even angrier. He angrily increased his rocket’s speed to full power, only for Tails to get out of the way and reveal that the ursine, who was now flying too fast to make a quick turn or stop, was headed straight into a machine whose piping sent him inside a vat of yellow liquid while his ship landed outside in a scrap pile. Trapped, Bearanger then started shouting and banging on the glass with his fists, not knowing it was sound-proof and Tails could not hear what he was saying.[1]

Trivia

TailsSkyPatrolBetaBearenger
  • The prototype design of Bearanger, seen in some early beta footage of Tails' Skypatrol, had him resembling the recurring antagonist of Disney's Mickey Mouse, Pete.
    • Interestingly enough, Pete himself was originally designed as a bear in the Alice Comedies and the Oswald the Lucky Rabbit shorts, before he was redesigned into a cat for his antagonism against Mickey.
  • Bearanger's rocket is similar in appearance to fighter planes called Flying Tigers utilized during World War II.
  • Bearanger is the only boss missing from the Japanese box artwork for Tails' Skypatrol.
  • Bearanger's name is possibly intended as a portmanteau of "Bear" and "Anger", referencing his hot-headed personality. However, Ian Flynn has stated that his name was rather a play on "derringer", a type of firearm, since he rides around on a giant bullet.[4]
  • Bearanger's name was translated as Bearenger in the Sonic the Hedgehog Encyclo-speed-ia.[3]
