Hocke-Wulf

Gyee-hee-hee! You can fly, but you can't hide! I'm twice as smart as you feather-brains!

— Hocke-Wulf, Sonic the Hedgehog: Tails' 30th Anniversary Special

Hocke-Wulf[1] (ホッケウルフ[2] Hokke Urufu?), also known as Focke-Wulf, is a character that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. He is an anthropomorphic wolf who acts as a member of the Witchcarters and rides around in his flying motorbike.

History

Tails' Skypatrol

In Tails' Skypatrol, Hocke-Wulf, along with Bearanger and Carrottia, was one of three henchmen of Witchcart, who was threatening to transform inhabitants of the island into crystals. He was later defeated by Miles "Tails" Prower.

Personality

A giggling fiend on a flying bike who hurls exploding mines at Tails.

— Description, Sonic the Hedgehog Encyclo-speed-ia

Hocke-Wulf has been described as a giggling fiend.[1]

In the IDW comics, Hocke-Wulf acts as a giggly, mean-spirited bully who enjoys tormenting creatures who are smaller and weaker than him. Despite his jovial nature, he also has a temper and will become angry and violent if he is pushed far enough. Hocke-Wulf is arrogant, believing himself to be very smart and boasting about his strength; however, he is actually rather dimwitted, getting a metaphor wrong, and him attempting to fight Tails hands-on leads to him accidentally trapping himself by running without looking where he is going. Hocke-Wulf also fears his boss, Witchcart, and will quickly obey her orders when she gets angry.[3]

Powers and abilities

Hocke-Wulf is durable enough to withstand a Spin Jump from Sonic, although not without pain.[3]

Battle

Hocke-Wulf is featured as the first boss of the game after the player reaches the end of Rail Canyon. He pilots a flying, yellow motorbike, while he tosses mines, which float in midair in certain patterns.

Boss guide

If Tails tosses his Boomering into a mine, it shatters into four tiny bombs, scattering in different directions. Blowing up all four bombs with Tails' Boomering gives a hundred points each, or the player can drop the mine on Hocke-Wulf by using the Boomering. Like other bosses, the player has to land twenty hits to defeat Hocke-Wulf or toss him into the ground four times.

Falke Wulf

In the Sonic the Hedgehog comic series and its spin-offs published by Archie Comics, Hocke-Wulf is referred to as Falke Wulf. In this media, he is a part of the Witchcarters, a trio of mobian thugs controlled by Wendy Naugus against their will. His first name, according to Ian Flynn, was changed from its original translation of "Focke-Wulf" because it sounded too similar to a certain curse word.[4]

Hocke-Wulf would come to Flicky Island with Witchcart and the other Witchcarters. After they conquered the island, they went to the island's Flickies so Witchcart could use them for her diabolical plans, with Hocke-Wulf using this as an opportunity to pick on the far smaller and weaker birds. This briefly came to a halt, however, as Sonic the Hedgehog rushed in and bounced off Hocke-Wulf's head just as he was stuffing Flickies into a hollow crystal. Once Sonic was captured by Witchcart zapping him from behind with her wand, she then ordered Hocke-Wulf and his cohorts to get back to work, with Hocke-Wulf flying off to Spring Stadium.

In Spring Stadium, Hocke-Wulf would continue tormenting the Flickies further by capturing them in a butterfly net, and teasing them for being little and meek. This persisted until Tails confronted him and pulled him off his bike, though this was circumvented by Hocke-Wulf whistling his bike back to him. Once he got back on board, he prepared to throw a mine at the fox; however, the Flickies would help Tails by whistling in different directions, causing his bike to go out of control and pull in every direction until he fell off of it. With no other option remaining, Hocke-Wulf would charge towards Tails while pathetically swinging his arms around, but Tails easily moved out of the way, ending in Hocke-Wulf falling into a pit filled with springs where he would bounce around helplessly.[3]
