Sordward is a character appearing in Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield. He is the antagonist the player will fight if they are playing Pokémon Sword.

Appearance

Sordward is a tall male with light grey hair in the shape of a sword. He wears a blue suit with a small microphone attached to the collar.

Personality

Sordward is arrogant and claims that he and his younger twin brother Shielbert are Galarian royalty and desire to see Galarian royalty re-establish control over the Galar region. He has a very inflated ego, seeing himself and his brother as famous celebrities, despite no one knowing of or liking them. He and his brother believe that Zacian and Zamazenta stole their ancestor's credit for stopping the Darkest Day, calling them the "false heroes". Throughout the postgame, he and Shielbert force Pokémon to Dynamax at the multiple Gyms throughout Galar as "experiments", planning to bombard Zacian and Zamazenta with Galar particles to make them go berserk, thus ruining peoples view of them as heroes.

Biography

Games

Sordward only appears alongside his brother Shielbert once the first Champion Cup is finished. The player must head to Slumbering Weald, back to the ruins where they and Hop picked up the Rusted Sword and Shield to return them. As they do so, Sordward and Shielbert appear and take them.

If the player is playing on Pokémon Sword; they will challenge Sordward for the Rusted Sword; in Pokémon Shield, Hop will do so. The player will win while Hop ends up losing, which causes the sword to be reclaimed/stolen respectively. After recognizing the player as the one who destroyed the mural at Stow-on-Side (which was caused by Bede) and capturing Eternatus, they scold them for their actions. They then flee to begin their Dynamax havoc, first starting in the Turffield, Hulbury and Motostoke stadiums. Once the Pokémon there is dealt with, the two intrude into the Pokémon Laboratory at Wedgehurst and take the Wishing Pieces with the help of a researcher they put as an infiltrator, resuming their havoc at the other stadiums (bar Spikemuth, due to its lack of a Power Spot).

Once the last Gym has been dealt with, Sonia learns that the two went to the Power Plant and tries to open the lock to no avail, until her Yamper overloads the circuit. If the player is playing on Pokémon Sword, Sordward will intercept them with a group of followers, only to be defeated and goes up to see how his younger brother is doing after the group hears howling. In Pokémon Shield, Sordward takes it upon himself to control Zacian, however the Pokémon goes berserk and he is only saved after Zamazenta intercepts.

After the affected Pokémon leaves, the player catches the unaffected one, causing Sordward and Shielbert to realize that their actions were misguided and ask Piers to bring them to the according authority to atone for their crimes. Leon soon hears of this and the two brothers return to the Slumbering Weald, witnessing the player and Hop's match against each other. Deeply impressed, they had come to properly apologize to the player before going off to apologize to others.

If the player has both the Isle of Armor and Crown Tundra, Sordward and Shielbert eventually decide to host the Galarian Star Tournament, a two-on-two match between competitors. The two naturally pair with each other, although they are always eliminated in the first round. After having played with other potential participants, the two reveal themselves, explain how they started the tournament and became selectable partners.
