Irin hatches from the Red Egg, obtained by Han Yoohyun as a dungeon-clearing reward item.[1][2] Though the egg was initially inert,[3] and should've stayed so for a long time before hatching, Yoojin uses his My Brat Is The Best skill on it[3] and speeds its growth with his Caregiver title.[4] The hatching conditions are also met almost immediately after, when Yoohyun and Han Yoojin arrive at Yoojin's home and meet Yoo Myeongwoo as he is leaving the Gold Forge; the egg is briefly exposed to fire elemental Ismual's heat and promptly hatches. The currently-unnamed elemental roams over Yoohyun's body and eats a small flame produced by Yoohyun.[1] Over the next few days, the elemental stays with Yoohyun, who learns that it eats mainly fire but will also eat magical objects like magic stones and items. Yoohyun brings it along on a dungeon trip he undertakes with Yoojin; in the car, the latter observes that Irin has grown and, in the novel, sees for the first time how it likes to enter Yoohyun's eye and act as a tattoo. Inside the snowy dungeon, Yoohyun sends it to curl around Yoojin's neck to protect him from the cold.[5]
(In the webtoon, the Han brothers enter the Gold Forge itself and the egg hatches only when directly touched by Ismual's flames. It immediately demonstrates how it likes to enter Yoohyun's eye; the only new learning for Yoojin during the car ride a few days later is that it can act as a tattoo.[2])
Yoohyun continues taking care of Irin despite its rowdiness, readily eating up several billions of won's worth of equipment from the Haeyeon Guild training room at one point. Yoojin sees it a while later and urges Yoohyun to name it while taking its own opinion into account.[6] A couple of days later, Irin accompanies Yoohyun to the special isolation center, and as Yoohyun speaks to Song Taewon, he sends Irin to cause an explosive distraction that lets him kill Yoon Kyeongsoo.[7]
Irin next appears during the Hong Kong battle, helping Yoohyun launch his attack on the Kraken. Its power far outstrips Yoohyun's ability to control it; he is able to kill the Kraken with a single directed blow, but the rush of power overwhelms Yoohyun and makes him lose rationality.[8] A suspicious Yoojin realizes that it's due to Irin's influence and tries to use the Terrifying Hatchling Class Teacher skill to understand its mind, but Irin seizes the opportunity to help him invoke the mindscape skill he inherited from Diarma.[9] In their joint mindscape, modeled after the Han brothers' old house due to Yoohyun's fondness for it, Irin explains that its power has made Yoohyun act more aggressive and how to fix the issue. It urges Yoojin to be more affectionate towards Yoohyun and explains its own abilities before helping Yoojin leave the mindscape.[10] The next day, Irin accompanies Yoohyun as always, and Yoojin notes that in the real world, its abilities and intellect seem limited, making it unresponsive and acting like an ordinary lizard.[11]
After they return to Korea, Yoohyun has to leave for a dungeon raid but secretly leaves Irin outside to keep an eye on Yoojin. When Song Taewon abruptly turns on Yoojin, using his attack doubling skill against him to weaken his Fear Resistance, Yoohyun uses his strengthened control from Hong Kong to briefly channel his consciousness through Irin's body[12] and create a full-sized body of flame to hold off Song Taewon until Yoojin can call Sung Hyunjae for help. When their fight is interrupted by the appearance of a giant mole monster, Irin's rapidly weakening strength means that Yoohyun is forced to surrender Yoojin to Song Taewon's safety. After he ends the channeling of his consciousness, Irin sinks into Yoojin's skin as a tattoo and presumably falls asleep from exhaustion.[13] After Yoohyun reunites with Yoojin at the latter's home, Irin returns to Yoohyun.[14]
Yoohyun (disguised as Kim Minee) and Irin accompany Yoojin to Seseong Guild so he can speak to Sung Hyunjae. When "Kim Minee" is refused access into Sung Hyunjae's house, Yoohyun secretly passes Irin to Yoojin to keep watch.[15] As it is acting as a tattoo, it cannot see when Yoojin is briefly dropped into the water tank by Sung Hyunjae and doesn't initially alert Yoohyun of the danger.[16] However, it eventually notices that Yoojin is unconscious and passes the knowledge to Yoohyun, who forces his way past the guards into Sung Hyunjae's house and wakes Irin to share senses with again, seeing that Yoojin is still unconscious. Once Yoojin wakes up, Irin takes the lead in guiding him to Yoohyun and Sung Hyunjae.[17]
When fighting against Choi Sukwon (transformed by Jellyfish into an SSS-rank monster), Irin helps the amnesiac Yoohyun to fight, both acting as a weapon itself[18] and using its flame to set the environment ablaze and deter Choi Sukwon.[19] Afterwards, when Yoohyun reunites with Yoojin in the dungeon that he used to dispose of Choi Sukwon, Irin pops out during their conversation to eat the dungeon byproduct-made handkerchief used by Yoojin, who gladly gives it over as thanks for its hard work.[20]
After Yoohyun and Yerim move into Yoojin's home at the rearing facility, they go shopping at a department store for furniture. When they come across a store that sells furniture made from dungeon byproducts, Irin ends up popping out and devouring a good portion of the furniture on display.[21]
Upon first arriving in the virtual reality dungeon, it is possible that Irin helped Yoohyun (at the time acting as Alpha) destroy Commercial District 2 in Achates City, given the sheer destructive force he exhibited; however, this has not been confirmed.[22] Irin appears more definitively later when Yoohyun has been freed by a temporarily-killed Yoojin from the Achates Defense Agency and is fighting Sigma; Irin assists Yoohyun in escaping to the nearby Mana Hole, and when Sigma causes the building to collapse on them, Irin burns through the structure with ease to prevent them from buried.[23] Once Yoojin regains consciousness, Irin fusses over him with Yoohyun, the latter of whom is hearing it speak for the first time.[24] Yoojin uses a Mini-Mini Cookie to shrink down so Yoohyun can safely take him along on the hunt for Sigma, and Irin is delighted to see the tiny Yoojin, wanting to be the one to protect him, but is rejected. In the end, it participates in the attack against Sigma and the SS-rank monsters.[25][26]
The morning after, Yoohyun leaves Irin to watch over Yoojin while he goes to the Achates Defense Agency rooftop. When Yoojin follows him there, Irin guides him straight to Yoohyun; during their confrontation, it briefly appears as if wanting to cut the wire threatening Yoojin's safety, but holds back at Yoojin's command.[27] After Sigma's transformation into a real person triggers an influx of monsters from the Achates Mana Hole starting that evening, Irin participates in the fight to hold them back, being particularly instrumental when a monster with mana absorption skills appears. Yoojin showers Irin with praise at its request, and Irin then urges Yoojin to tell Yoohyun he loves him and praise him too.[28]
The following night, when Noah (acting as Mu) arrives from Médecin City and brings everyone on board the Battleship Flore, Irin sneaks away from Yoohyun to watch over Yoojin,[29] explaining to a confused Yoojin that despite Irin liking Yoohyun the most, it has to instead protect Yoojin because he's the most important to Yoohyun. It helps Yoojin detect cameras and security skills to sneak through the battleship to find Yoohyun and the others.[30] When Noah and the others discuss Mu's elemental ancestry, Irin confirms the presence of elementals in the Guardverse, specifically water elementals.[31]
Irin continues helping Yoohyun fight, taking part in the battle against the SS-rank monsters at Lancea City. It also watches over the Han brothers as they test Yoojin's increased mana control.[32] As they approach Drosia City, Irin explains elemental contracts and how it formed its own with Yoohyun the moment it was born. Irin is daunted by the giant displays of water magic around Drosia[33] but regains its spirit in time to battle the giant monster swarm.[34] Entering Drosia, Irin talks about how temperature control will be within its grasp as it grows, but shies away soon after from the overly interested water elementals.[35]
Irin is extremely displeased upon learning that Bak Yerim will bring a water elemental back to their world, taking comfort in the fact that it will be the strongest of Earth's elementals as the first and eldest. It declares its vehement dislike for water elementals, though it immediately hides in Yoohyun's collar from Drosia's water elementals hovering nearby. Later, Irin is confused by Yoohyun's inability to remember the watch he wanted to gift Yoojin.[36] It participates in yet more monster fighting during the installation of the fourth of Newcomer's discs, acting as a spear for Yoohyun.[37] When the fifth disc installation results in the immediate attack of the Scout, Irin prepares to help Yoohyun sever his arm to free himself from their chains, but is stopped by Yoojin, who it instead decides to take and flee with. Yoojin stops it again, pointing out the danger to Irin if Yoohyun dies.[38] It evacuates through the exit portal with Yoohyun, escaping safely.[39]
Having returned to the Black Bull Dungeon in Japan, Irin continues accompanying Yoohyun through the dungeon raid. When the Han brothers talk about Yoohyun's desires to consume Yoojin, Irin climbs onto Yoojin's shoulder, where it becomes clear that it can still talk in the real world thanks to Yoo Eunhye's newly-learned Mana Spring skill providing the same mana-rich environment as the Mana Holes did. Irin is frustrated by Yoohyun's conviction that his desires are negative and should be suppressed, asserting that he doesn't have bad intentions and explaining his desires are normal among fire elementals; it insists that he has to stop suppressing himself in order to grow healthily. Its further contributions are blocked by Yoohyun physically lifting it away from Yoojin's body and mana supply.[40]
It sneaks out again while Yoohyun is battling Shishio to speak to Yoojin,[41] informing him of Yoohyun's faint and growing care for other people besides Yoojin. It's baffled by Yoojin's delight at this, insisting that he (like fire elementals) should only have one sole passion, and is only satisfied when Yoojin pretends to be upset by the revelation. It also notes Yoohyun's fire changed due to Yoojin's love for him, and expresses its hope that Yoojin will see the unsuppressed Yoohyun someday, though acknowleding this would be dangerous for Yoojin. After eating the remnant molten metal from Yoohyun's use of Sword Predator, it retreats.[42]
Back in Korea, Irin appears during a Han-Bak family night out when Yoojin shows care for Yerim's water elemental egg; in what is apparently a recurring event, it expresses its dislike for the water elemental meant for Yerim and wails to Yoohyun that Yoojin only cares about the water elemental.[43] On the day of Chuseok, Irin appears again during the discussion of what form the water elemental will take, telling everyone that its form was shaped by its contractor's wishes, but since Yoohyun didn't care particularly about its looks, it appeared as a lizard (suspected to be a reference to salamanders) as this is apparently the most famous shape fire elementals take in Earth mythology. It claims that if Yoohyun knew he could influence its shape, it probably would've appeared identical to Yoojin.[44]
When Yoojin proposes sparring via the mindscape skill to Yoohyun, Irin sneaks away from him to check in with Yoojin and make him agree not to use too many skills that would overpower Yoohyun, claiming it's so that the battle won't end before Yoohyun is satisfied, though Yoojin suspects it may be because Irin simply wants Yoohyun to win.[45] When the spar begins, Irin may have stopped Eunhye from manifesting within the mindscape;[46] it briefly pops out along with Eunhye and the two tussle briefly, but are separated by Yerim before returning to their owners.[47] Irin returns to Yoohyun's consciousness and helps him by briefly immobilizing Yoojin so Yoohyun's attacks have time to land, using its imugi form from the virtual reality dungeon.[48]
