Chirp!
Chapter 53
Chirpie (Korean: 삐약, RR: Ppiyak, lit. "chirp") is a mutant monster that was found by and currently resides with Han Yoojin. It is slightly glitched, not appearing properly in the system. Chirpie's rank and abilities are shrouded in mystery, with it temporarily revealing skills as high as L-rank.
Chirpie is not its true name or identity; when narrating from its own perspective, it censors out its own name so that it appears as "□□□".[1]
Appearance
Chirpie is a white bird that is so chubby and fluffy as to be almost completely round. It has tiny, round black eyes, a light yellow beak, and two short legs colored the same light yellow. Its wings are tiny enough that it cannot fly of its own accord.[2] It's quite small, being about the size of two average human fists put together.[3] Its fluff contributes significantly to its size, with it having a meager height of 12cm only after including its feathers,[4] and being a quarter of the size when its feathers are wetted down and lying flat. Its feathers dry quickly, suggesting some degree of waterproofing.[5]
Chirpie eventually starts wearing leather-and-metal bracelets corresponding to some Safe Rearing Necklaces, which prevent it from being attacked by other monsters. These bracelets sit around each of its legs, much like a bird's leg band.[6][7]
Personality
Chirpie has a strange personality. It appears at first to be quite simple-minded, fitting for a low-rank monster. In this state, it is content to wander around and do nothing much, having almost the same intelligence as a baby.[3] This changes when it notices magic stones nearby, at which point it develops a single-minded focus aimed at obtaining the magic stones in question; the higher their rank, the more driven it is.[5] Scenes from its perspective show that this is due to a chronic lack of Mana causing it to be constantly hungry for magic stones, its sole food source.[1]
At times, however, Chirpie seemingly becomes calmer and more intelligent. It grows capable of comprehending speech, solving moderately complex puzzles,[8] and develops a preference for watching television and traveling.[4]
Abilities
Chirpie's Status Window is heavily glitched to the point of almost all information being redacted. As such, very little is known about its stats, skills, and growth conditions. It is known to be a juvenile of its species.[3]
Stats
As a baby bird, Chirpie is currently of stat rank F. Its potential stat rank was glitched out and is therefore unknown.[3]
Skills
Chirpie is known to have at least 5 optimized initial skills, all of which can be acquired after growth.[3]
After pushing itself and making full use of its strength, it was able to momentarily "grow" enough to access one of its skills, though usage of this skill costs it a significant amount of Mana and leaves it even hungrier than usual:
Ruler Of Space (L): Allows the user to teleport itself or others through space at will. This teleportation can even penetrate dungeons,[1] and has a range of over 2000 kilometers, able to teleport from Seoul, South Korea to Hong Kong, China.[9]
Belongings
Relationships
Han Yoojin
Chirpie likes Yoojin, considering him its father and calling him "dad".[1] It loves being with him and misses him when he's gone, to the point of pushing itself to the brink of starvation just to teleport to his side.[9]
Peace
Chirpie gets along decently with Peace, with the two of them mostly leaving each other to their own devices.
Trivia
- It is a strong possibility that Chirpie is actually the Bird Who Counts Stars herself. Evidence includes the following:
- Both Chirpie and the Bird Who Counts Stars[11] are described as white birds.
- The White Bird went missing[12] around the same time that Chirpie appeared.[3]
- The Bird Who Counts Stars took Han Yoohyun's body for unknown reasons, hiding it away before her disappearance.[13] In addition, her foresight abilities would mean she'd know about Yoojin's impact on the altered timeline.[11] Chirpie has shown great attachment to Han Yoojin, and seems to have some interest in Han Yoohyun, calling out when it noticed him nearby despite having followed instructions to stay quiet prior to that point.[5]
- When Chirpie narrates the story, it refers to itself as "□□□□□□□" or "□□□",[1] which matches the number of syllable blocks in the Bird's Korean names (별을 헤아리는 새, lit. "Star-Counting Bird" and 하얀 새, lit. "White Bird" respectively).
- Chirpie's Ruler of Space ability[1] matches the Ruler of Water title possessed by Water Droplet, another transcendent,[14] suggesting it is similar in nature to her. Given that the White Bird stayed at the Snowing Tree, with the dimension being hard to reach and the tree itself being immensely large, it would make sense for her to possess a spatial ability.
- Chirpie is constantly hungry for magic stones and lacks Mana. Water Droplet has mentioned that when existences such as transcendents try to enter one world from another, they face resistance and are cut down, becoming "infinitely weaker".[12] Chirpie being a transcendent would thus explain its glitch-filled nature, low-rank stats despite potential for immensely high-rank skills, and constant hunger for Mana, as its Mana reserves would have been depleted beyond belief, falling from L-rank to an F-rank's capacity.
- Chirpie seems to recognize Eunhye, the reincarnation of Shalos, who used to know the Bird Who Counts Stars.[2]
- When Yoojin dreams of the Snowing Tree, the Bird Who Counts Stars is not present; rather, it's Chirpie who appears among its branches, and seems to guide Yoojin to Yoohyun's body at the base of the tree. Its feathers are also damp when Yoojin wakes up, suggesting it was physically present at the tree somehow, though it might also have gone out into the rainy night.[15]
