Gnosi

Now you’re free, Alpha.

Chapter 238

Gnosi (Korean: 그노시, RR: Geunosi) is the virtual reality dungeon recreation of an A-rank Guard from Achates City. Formerly one of the earliest members of the Achates Defense Agency, he defected and founded the Achates rebel movement in protest of the Defense Agency's increasingly dictatorial attitude. He takes part in the coup attempt led by Vitera and Han Yoojin, but attacks Yoojin in a bid to free his son, Alpha.

Appearance

Gnosi is a middle-aged man. As Alpha's father, he is presumably at least in his mid-forties.[1]

Personality

Gnosi is a polite man well-liked by those around him.[2][3] He is good at masking his emotions, giving away no hint of discontent until the opportune moment arises to act.[4]

History

In the original Guardverse, Gnosi was one of the earliest Awakened people in Achates City and worked in the Achates Defense Agency. As the Agency steadily transformed into a dictatorship, he could not bear to enable it and eventually defected, starting the rebel movement with fellow-minded people. (His defection is described as occurring "over a decade" prior to his appearance in the VR dungeon. 16 years prior would have been the point at which his son Alpha was taken from him by the Defense Agency, and therefore may have played a part in his defection.) However, the movement failed and Gnosi went underground to build resistance forces. In the following years, he would undertake the duty of smuggling children likely to be claimed by the Defense Agency (such as Vitera) to safehouses in Achates or to the sympathetic Lancea City.[2] His rebellious actions led him to gain a bounty of 20 million L.[1]

At some point, he likely spearheaded a coup effort and tried to break Alpha free of the Defense Agency, but this attempt was likely to have failed due to the relative weakness of the rebels.[5] It is unknown whether this original version of Gnosi fell in the probable coup attempt or at another time; at the very latest, he would've perished alongside the rest of the Guardverse when it fell to its source, the Deepest Spring.

Synopsis

In the virtual reality dungeon, Gnosi comes to see Yoojin when he enters the front for the rebel hideout, alerted by Yoojin's seditious speech.[2] He searches Yoojin, impressed by the apparent C-rank's high-quality A-rank items, then has him sign a non-disclosure contract and guides him to the actual rebel hideout. Gnosi then fetches Vitera, and the trio discuss the history of the Achates rebel movement before going over Yoojin's plan of attack. Despite Yoojin explicitly stating his desire to have Alpha to himself as his reward, Gnosi says nothing, leaving both Yoojin and Vitera unaware of his discontent at this idea.[2]

Gnosi, along with Vitera, leads the rebel team when they execute Yoojin's plan. The team splits up once they approach the Achates Mana Hole; Gnosi and two other A-ranks accompany Yoojin to free Alpha. However, once Alpha's restraints are undone, Gnosi seizes his chance to fatally shoot Yoojin in the back.[4] Unbeknownst to Gnosi, Alpha is currently the host body for Han Yoohyun, so rather than Alpha recognizing his father, Han Yoohyun lashes out at his brother's apparent murderer, giving him severe burns and knocking him out.[6] Due to the lack of healers and abundance of casualties, he gets hospitalized rather than healed immediately.[7]

At some point in the next few days, he is given the in-universe explanation for "Alpha" and Yoojin's relationship. 5 days after the successful coup, he is released from the hospital and comes to the Achates Mana Hole, where he corrects the other Defense Agency staff's assumptions that the abruptly-appearing Peace is a fox. Having spent the past few days checking with others that "Alpha" genuinely cared for Yoojin and was not brainwashed, he grows morose over Yoojin's comparatively speedy rescue of his son. Just then, Peace attacks Gnosi, having realized he attacked Yoojin. Gnosi is startled, but as he watches Peace fly off without hurting him further, realizes that Alpha might still come back someday. Revitalized by this realization, he waves off Vitera's attempt to get the healing-resistant burned treated so it won't scar, instead keeping it as a reminder of his son and turning his attention to rebuilding for Alpha's eventual return.[3]

Abilities

Stats

Gnosi is a stat A-rank.[1]

Other abilities

Nothing is known about Gnosi's skills. He displays strong and efficient combat capabilities.[4]

Relationships

Vitera

Gnosi seems fond of Vitera. One of the children he helped escape to Lancea, they now work together for the rebel movement, and he follows her lead, perhaps due to her higher rank.[2]

Alpha

Gnosi is Alpha's father and deeply regrets not being able to rescue him earlier.[3] He is careful to ensure his safety, not making a move against Han Yoojin until he was sure Alpha had been completely freed.[4]
