I just helped a little with finding people!

Chapter 120

Do Hamin (Korean: 도하민, RR: Do Hamin) is an Awakened person whose skills lean towards information gathering. In the pre-regression timeline, he ran an information dealing business for the Hunter community, using the funds to support his true passion, his hamster-dedicated pet shop Happy Hamsters. In the post-regression timeline, he has instead been scouted by Han Yoojin and now exclusively uses his information gathering skills for him, running his hamster shop out of the kiseungsu rearing facility's attached building.

Appearance

Little description is given of Do Hamin in the novel, aside from the fact that he wears round glasses.[1] In the webtoon, he is depicted as a fat man with pale skin and light brown hair who generally dresses in relaxed fashion consisting of layered shirts and sweatpants.[2]

Personality

Do Hamin is a cheery and generally confident man.[3] He is fairly decisive. He can be easily spooked, but in the pre-regression timeline, he became steadier and more hardened as a result of the hardships he faced during his early days in the Hunter community. When speaking about topics he likes, such as hamsters[4] or movies, he grows passionate and ready to speak at length if permitted to do so, and is pleased to share his interests with others.[5] He is relaxed, casual, and sometimes playful, nicknaming Han Yoojin "Lord" and using the title so much that the others around him begin using it too.[6] Though passionate, he is also responsible, as when he acknowledges the needs of wild animals over his own desire to own them.[7]

History

Do Hamin Awakened sometime in the first three years after dungeons appeared. He ran the hamster-specialty pet shop Happy Hamsters at next to no profit margin, funding it largely off the money from the Hamster Detective Agency he also established. As a detective for hire, his work mainly consisted of background checks, but he also used the tracking skill he gained from Awakening to take on search and location requests. Once word got out about his tracking abilities, he was sought out and targeted by various figures he faced hardships in dealing with. Eventually, the trouble cleared up and he managed to establish himself as an information dealer in the Hunter community. He singlehandedly caused a large part of the Hunter community to regularly change and renew their personal identification and technology so as to dodge his tracking skill.[3]

At some point, he became involved with Han Yoojin,[3] and is implied to have helped him deal with Haeyeon Guild matters.[8]

As part of his investigative work, Hamin made some contacts among private detective circles, including one whose online monker was "Seagull on the Mountain Out Back" and who was seemingly a reliable contact who never betrayed him up until the point of regression.[9]

Synopsis

Do Hamin's detective services are made use of by Han Yoojin in order to track down Yoo Myeongwoo; using his tracking skill in conjunction with Myeongwoo's phone number, he quickly locates him and sends the info to Yoojin, ending their transaction.[3]

Do Hamin is approached by Yoojin again to request help with the plan to bait the corrupt Hunter Association via his own kidnapping. Though initially reluctant to help, Hamin is quickly cowed by Yoojin's pre-regression-influenced description of all the trouble his tracking abilities could get him into in the Hunter community, and agrees to Yoojin's offer of protection and shelter in exchange for providing his intelligence-gathering services exclusively, adding in the condition that Yoojin should allow him to reopen his hamster shop in the kiseungsu rearing facility's attached building. With the deal settled, Hamin promptly begins working for Yoojin, regularly checking his location as part of the kidnapping plan.[4] During the mission, Hamin coordinates directly with Noah Luire to track Yoojin's location and status, reporting back to the team at Haeyeon Guild; though the presence of so many high-rank Hunters makes him nervous, he pushes through with the mission successfully.[1]

Do Hamin formally sets up shop at the facility's attached building shortly before Yoojin ropes him in again to trace the corrupt Association workers fleeing in the wake of his foiled kidnapping. Though Do Hamin is upset by the idea of how much he'll have to work, Yoojin successfully baits him with the promise of a Gold Hamster, a valuable D-rank dungeon boss monster from central Africa.[7] Hamin helps sort through the gathered data recovered from their targets and identifies some of the international sales-related documents from his experience at the hamster shop, and is promptly set to work on the related information, much to his dismay. Once the targets are narrowed down, he's further pushed to use his skill to track them all down.[10]

Along the way, as Do Hamin spends time at the attached building, he becomes friendly with the other residents and employees there, including workers at the Forge, members of Seok Hayan's research team,[6] Kim Minee of Haeyeon Guild, and of course, Noah Luire, who he worked with previously.[11] At some point, he also grows friendly with Bak Yerim.[8]

Yoojin asks at one point for Do Hamin to trace the Dokkaebi King, but he is unable to do so since their number hasn't been used for long enough.[11]

When Noah wins his match against Riette during the A-rank ranking competition's opening ceremony, Do Hamin is among the group from the building who call him excitedly to shower him in praise and congratulations.[11]

The presence of Do Hamin's hamster shop makes keeping hamsters a popular hobby amongst the residents and visitors at the building, with even Seok Hayan adopting one. He expands his shop to include a hamster "hotel" for owners who will be away for dungeon raids and the like. Hamin takes up the habit of intimidating prospective adopters into taking care of their pets by threatening that if they don't, he'll see them barred from getting Yoojin's kiseungsu or Myeongwoo's equipment.[9]

The day after Sung Hyunjae's birthday, Hamin is visited by Yoojin asking for help locating his pre-regression contacts. Though Hamin's skill is unable to find them, perhaps due to their number being too new again,[12] he puts Yoojin in touch with one of his own reliable investigative contacts, the aforementioned Seagull. He also takes the opportunity to get an update on the Gold Hamster's status, before chiding Kim Minee, who has begun to help out at the hamster shop. Though Yoojin scolds him for threatening Hunters using his and Myeongwoo's names, Hamin is unrepentant and explains that he keeps strict records on whether his customers are actually keeping up with their pets' welfare, which sways Yoojin.[9]

Before Yoojin leaves for Japan, Do Hamin gets information back from his contacts and finishes Yoojin's requested investigations into his pre-regression friends.[13] During Chuseok, Hamin anonymously sends gifts to said friends on Yoojin's behalf and delivers the gathered investigative data to him via Kim Minee's help.[14]

Abilities

Stats

Nothing is known about Do Hamin's stats. As he seemingly doesn't participate in dungeon raids, combined with his presence in the pre-regression Yoojin's social circles, it can be inferred that he is low-rank, perhaps D-rank at most.

Skills

  • Connecting Threads (unknown rank): Do Hamin's signature skill. Allows him to track a target based on their personal information, the process of which requires a physical item (ideally) or a number (not ideal but still usable) associated with the target for over a year, typically drawn from personal belongings or identification. This skill is fairly energy-intensive and several uses in a short period can exhaust the user.[7]

Relationships

Han Yoojin

Prior to the regression, Do Hamin and Han Yoojin appeared to have had a friendly, casual relationship, with the post-regression Yoojin internally calling him names in a teasing manner;[3] Do Hamin also shared stories about his personal struggles with Yoojin, implying a level of care and honesty in their bond.[4]

After the regression, they have a similarly relaxed and friendly relationship and are on a first-name basis,[14] though Hamin does bear some frustration at how hard he has to work when called upon by Yoojin.[7]

Noah Luire

As repeated investigative partners, Do Hamin is on quite good terms with Noah, personally invested in his victory over Riette and calling him directly to congratulate him.[11]

Bak Yerim

Bak Yerim is among the few high-rank Hunters that Do Hamin is comfortable around.[8] They will readily trade jokes back and forth and share movie and book recommendations.[5]

Quotes

  • (to Han Yoojin) Hrk, the further the Lord is, the better![7]

Trivia

  • Do Hamin's nickname for Yoojin is 주님, ju-nim, drawn from the Korean word for "landlord" (Korean: 건물주님, RR: geonmulju-nim, lit. "building master"). The nickname is incidentally the same "Lord" used for God or Jesus, giving rise to jokes around the kiseungsu rearing facility, with some of Seok Hayan's research team calling Yoojin "Jesus".[6]
