Very Gnawty is the boss of the world Kongo Jungle of the Donkey Kong Island, as well as the first boss in the game Donkey Kong Country. He can be found in the stage Very Gnawty's Lair, preceded by the stage Barrel Cannon Canyon and followed by Winky's Walkway.

Appearance

The Very Gnawty is a larger version of a regular Gnawty, but it differs from these regular enemies because he has the ability to jump. In the Super Family Computer/Super Nintendo Entertainment System version of Donkey Kong Country, his fur was green, as per the regular Gnawties in that version. In the Game Boy Color version of the game, Very Gnawty sports a yellow/light green fur. However, in the Game Boy Advance version, his fur was re-colored brown/red (swapping color schemes with the boss Really Gnawty between the SFC/SNES and GBA game versions).

Very Gnawty's Lair stage

Super Family Computer/Super Nintendo Entertainment System version

Being the very first boss in the game, Very Gnawty does not pose that much of a threat. When the battle starts, the Kongs will automatically break open a DK Barrel, summoning a secondary character if he is missing.

Very Gnawty will then approach the primates with small hops. To harm the boss, the player must simply jump on his head. After each successful attack, Very Gnawty will open his mouth surprise, look towards the screen and laugh. During this move and the next jump, the boss will be temporarily invincible against any attacks. As the boss battle goes on, Very Gnawty will jump farther and faster, increasing the difficulty of it. After receiving five hits, the boss will be defeated.

Very Gnawty will fall on the ground, and the heroes will receive a Giant Banana and celebrate their victory. After that, the world Monkey Mines will become accessible in the overworld map of the Donkey Kong Island.

Game Boy Color version

Very Gnawty's attack patterns in the GBC version of Donkey Kong Country are very similar to the ones in SFC/SNES version: the player must jump on the boss in order to harm him, wait for him to open his mouth, stare at the screen and laugh during the temporary period of invincibility until Very Gnawty resumes to jump forward. The boss will also be defeated after receiving five hits from the primates.

Similar to the previous game version, after the defeat of Very Gnawty, the Kongs will be reward with a Giant Banana, and they will gain access to the world Monkey Mines in the overworld map of the Donkey Kong Island.

Game Boy Advance version

In the GBA version, Very Gnawty's size is larger, being nearly twice as large as Diddy Kong. The boss battle in this version is similar to the SFC/SNES and GBC game versions. However, each time Very Gnawty is harmed by the primates, he will open the mouth, immediately execute a very large jump, being capable of reaching the edge of the arena, stare at the screen and laugh after landing. Additionally, he will display a red glow during the temporary periods of invincibility after being hit. Very Gnawty will be defeated after the heroes jump on him five times.

After the victory, the Kongs will receive a Giant Banana. Cranky Kong will appear, make a commentary about the battle, and take care of the prize for the heroes. The player will now be able to access the world Monkey Mines in the Donkey Kong Island.

In the same game version, if the player uses the Donkey Kong's Hand Slap move on the ground at the right side of the boss arena of the Very Gnawty's Lair, they will receive a photograph of a Gnawty for the Scrapbook.

Interestingly, there is an easter egg in the same game version, and that, after Really Gnawty is defeated in Gorilla Glacier, go back to Kongo Jungle, go to Jungle Hijinx, go to DK's treehouse, and Very Gnawty will appear in Donkey Kong's treehouse. Very Gnawty will be scared after seeing Donkey and Diddy and flee. This easter egg only works once for each save file for the 100% completion.

Trivia

  • Very Gnawty not only serves as the first boss of the game Donkey Kong Country, and the Donkey Kong Country series, as well as the very first boss in the entire Donkey Kong game series.
  • Later in the GBA version of the game Donkey Kong Country, after the player has defeated the boss Really Gnawty in the world Gorilla Glacier, they can find Very Gnawty inside the Donkey and Diddy Kong's treehouse by revisiting the stage Jungle Hijinxs in the world Kongo Jungle. When the Kongs approach the boss inside the house, he will get scared and hop out of the location. This cutscene can be triggered only once per saved game file.
  • In the game Donkey Kong 64 for Nintendo 64, there are large Gnawties sporting a size comparable to the bosses Very Gnawty and Really Gnawty from the game Donkey Kong Country. However, despite their large size, these enemies are still considered regular enemies in Donkey Kong 64, and they can be defeated by a single attack from the playable Kongs.
