Manky Kongs are orangutan enemies in the game Donkey Kong Country. They are the only Kongs in the game that are actually enemies. In fact, these orangutans are described as "Kong reject orangutans", implying that they have been exiled from the Kong Family for their savagery.^[1][2][3]

Overview

Manky Kongs are drastically different in appearance from the Kongs despite their shared species. They first appear in the Vine Valley stage Orang-utan Gang, and later in some stages of the world Kremkroc Industries, Inc. of Donkey Kong Island.

Manky Kongs attack by throwing a (seemingly) endless supply of Wooden Barrels in the Kongs' path. These enemies usually appear in high places of stages throwing Barrels, acting as obstacles. When the player is in the range of attack of the enemy, they will first hear a sound effect of a barrel being thrown. Soon afterwards, multiple barrels will appear rolling towards the primates, coming from outside of the screen at regular intervals. Because of this, Manky Kongs can be dangerous enemies. The heroes must avoid these barrels by jumping over them while progressing towards the location of the Manky Kong. If the Kongs jump over the enemy, the Manky Kong will turn around and keep throwing barrels towards the primates. As other regular enemies in the same game, Manky Kongs can be defeated with jump or roll attacks from Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong, but the former is usually safer. Rambi the Rhinoceros' horn attack can also easily destroy all barrels thrown by the Manky Kongs and defeat the enemies upon contact.

Aside from the Super Nintendo Entertainment System, Game Boy Color and Game Boy Advance versions of Donkey Kong Country, Manky Kongs have not appeared as enemies in other games, including Donkey Kong Land.

Trivia

• The name Manky Kong comes from the words "mangy" and "skanky", and a pun on the word "monkey".^[2] Manky is also a British slang term, meaning "dirty, nasty, unpleasant or smelly". This is likely because Rareware, the developer of Donkey Kong Country, is a British company. However, it is actually because of Manky Kong's ragged appearance, with bad teeth and unkempt fur falling out in places, notably the head. This is the reason why Manky Kong gets its' name.
• In regards to primates allied to the Kremling Krew, Manky Kongs are similar to Minkeys, monkey enemies from the games Donkey Kong Country 3 and Donkey Kong Land III.
• Manky Kong appeared in the game Super Smash Bros. Brawl for Nintendo Wii as a sticker (see Artwork in the Gallery section above).
• Despite Manky Kongs making no appearances as enemies outside the game Donkey Kong Country, another orangutan named Lanky Kong appears in the game Donkey Kong 64 for Nintendo 64, as a playable character. It leaves Lanky Kong, as the only one still allied with the Kong Family.
• Manky Kong's name is similar to Mankey^[4], a pig-nosed monkey creature from the Pokémon^[5] franchise.
• There are a total of 18 Manky Kongs in the game Donkey Kong Country.
• It can be speculated that the different appearances of Manky Kongs, when compared to regular Kongs, is likely due to they being affected by the energy from Krocodile Kore in the Lost World^[6] of the game Donkey Kong Country 2, that flows under the Crocodile Isle.
