The Mangoruby is an unusual plant-like caterpillar creature that acts as the fifth boss in the games Donkey Kong Country Returns and Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D, as well as the main boss of the Forest world of Donkey Kong Island. She is possessed by Wacky Pipes.
Physical Appearance and prersonality
Mangoruby appears to be a docile creature while sleeping, but when she wakes up, she becomes aggressive to Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong, especially when Wacky Pipes hypnotizes her, as she is seen letting out a loud roar after her rude awakening from the Kongs. Her feet and tail resemble leaf-like fins, her eyes resemble flowers, her body resembles turnips (or possibly radishes), that are connected by some sort of vine. she also has flower petals for eyes, and has a crested head covered with leaves. Mangoruby's mouth is crooked and sharp, showing many edges, acting as teeth. She also has a long purple tongue. She has two large light green leaves that look like dog ears. It should also be noted that due to assumed docile nature, she tires herself out after a pursuit, as well as when the light penetrates her skin.

Walkthrough
At the start, the player must go right and throw the DK Barrel, if needed, to summon another Kong. A cutscene will show the primates reaching some wooden and grassy wheel-like structures, and pounding the ground to reveal some Tikis and close some tarps that act as way for the Mangoruby to sleep, on the background. The creature, after sleeping peacefully, will wake, and roar loudly as she has been awoken in a very inappropriate way. Wacky Pipes will appear, hypnotize and possess the creature that she will dive into the water, starting the boss fight, as well as flip the giant tiki heads.
This boss fight is composed by three phases. In the first phase (as well as the second and third), the primates must pound on the blue flashing switch on the lowest grassy wheel initially, activating the other four ones on each rotating wheel. After pounding on the first switch, Mangoruby will emerge from the water, pursue and try to bite or electrocute the Kongs by flying around the arena. Her body will be charged with electricity making necessary to avoid the creature at all costs. Eventually, the boss will also drop electric charges that split and run across surfaces. The primates must cling on the higher grassy wheels and go around to pound on all four blue switches at any order. It is preferable to follow the rotation direction of the wheels to move quickly. In case of the Mangoruby catching up the heroes, they can always jump to other wheels to avoid her, because the boss cannot change directions suddenly. It is also possible to attract the creature to the lowest wheel and make her to dive into the water temporarily. If the primates take too long to pound on all switches, they will revert to the previous inactive state and the heroes will have to pound on the switch on the lowest wheel again while avoiding Mangoruby. After pounding on all blue switches, they will release the openings on the background irradiating the place with sunlight, slowing down the boss, and making her unable to produce electricity and vulnerable to jump attacks. During this section, the Kongs still must avoid the head of the Mangoruby, as well as her bites. After jumping on the creature, she will lose two of her body segments and tail and dive back into the water. It will end the first phase. If needed, there are two yellow plants on the platforms at the left and right sides of the arena that the primates can ground-pound nearby to reveal hearts, and pounding on the blue switches of the rotating wheels reveals bananas, Banana Coins or hearts, making easier to recover health.
The second phase is very similar to the first one, but the Mangoruby will become more fast and aggressive. The Kongs must repeat the strategy of the previous phase: return to the lowest wheel to pound on the first switch, activate the other ones and pound on them too, carefully avoid the the boss' attacks and bounce on her now shorter body. The boss will lose two more body segments and return to the water, finishing the second phase.
The third and final phase is also very similar to the previous ones, and the Mangoruby will become even more fast and aggressive. Donkey and Diddy Kong must use the same strategy again, being more cautious while pounding on the switches, avoiding the creature and her electricity, and trying to hit her even shorter body.
After receiving the final attack and lost her last ruby-like segments, the Mangoruby will fall down and pass out on the ground. Wacky Pipes will leave the creature's body dizzy. Again, the player has the option to beat down the Tiki Tak Tribe leader multiple times or let it go away. Either way, the Cliff world will be accessible now.
Extras
Defeating the Mangoruby adds Forest Frenzy Returns (or Vine Valley), Tree Top Rock Returns (or Longshot Launch) and Mangoruby Rush themes to Forest Music of the Music Gallery in the Extras menu. Collecting also all five Puzzle Pieces in the Key Temple level Blast 'n' Bounce adds the Forest diorama to the Diorama Gallery in the Extras menu.

- Mangoruby can be considered the weakest of all the bosses in the games Donkey Kong Country Returns and Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D, requiring only three hits to be defeated, instead of nine, such as Mugly, the first boss of both games.
- The reason for this is likely due to the nature of her battle, with Donkey Kong having to pound on the blue flashing switch on the lowest grassy wheel initially, activating the other four ones on each rotating wheel in all three phase of Mangoruby's battle, if she was given nine Hit-Points like most bosses, then the battle would have been considered too long.
- Mangoruby is the only female boss of Donkey Kong Country Returns and Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D.
- While appearing more like a caterpillar, Mangoruby's design concept may also be based partially on the mythological Wyrm, which is a dragon with a drake head, and worm-like (in some cases serpent or snake-like) body.[citation needed]
- Additionally, the Italian adaptation of the Mangoruby's name has a different meaning to the English one: it is "Dragruco", which merges "drago" and "bruco" (meaning dragon and caterpillar, respectively). It may give more evidence that the boss is a dragon of some sort.[citation needed]
