Nibblas are carnivorous fish found in a few of the underwater stages in Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble!. Nibblas supposedly replace Snapjaws from the previous game. Their color tells if they are friendly or dangerous (the latter is found the most).

Variants

Orange

The common orange Nibblas are enemies, often appearing in boardwalk stages, following the Kongs throughout the stage. Unlike most water enemies, Nibblas are completely invincible; not even Enguarde can defeat them with his trusty bill stab. They will swim right after a Kong when he or she falls into the water, making them tough to avoid. Although they are only found in a few stages, they are still quite obnoxious.

Blue

A blue color swap of a Nibbla appears in the underwater stage Fish Food Frenzy. It comes out when the stage starts, often panicking a new player into thinking that it will give chase; however, that is not the case, as this blue Nibbla is very unique.

The blue Nibbla will follow the Kongs as they swim. As time goes on, it will slowly get hungry, and turn light purple, to light pink, and finally to red. It must be kept blue in order to prevent the Kongs from losing a life. When it gets close to a Koco, it will eat it and become happier (followed by a burp sound). However, if it gets close to a Lurchin, it will get redder (followed by a cough sound), likely because it does not like the prickly taste of the spiky foe.

Whether or not the blue Nibbla should be considered an Animal Buddy is debatable, as it does help the Kongs get rid of underwater enemies, yet it can also kill them if not satisfied with food. A "No Animal Sign" also appears for it, although it is the only sign to not make the animal disappear in a puff, as the "No Animal Sign" is next to a tunnel leading to the end of the level.
