"So High" is a song by Doja Cat. It appears as the third track on her debut EP, Purrr!, also released as her debut single on March 13, 2014. An early version of the song was uploaded to her SoundCloud account on November 8, 2012, recorded on her laptop at home. The song uses the instrumental track "Falling Leaves" produced by Evil Needle.
Background
At the age of 17, Doja Cat spent her time at home making music on her laptop. "So High" being one of her earliest songs, she uploaded it to her SoundCloud account on November 8, 2012. This version was recorded on her laptop and has a rough sound, using an instrumental she found online: "Falling Leaves" by Evil Needle. It was later remastered in 2013 after signing to RCA Records with a joint venture deal with Kemosabe Records in late 2013, with the deal finalising in early 2014. After filming the music video in October 2013, it was released in March the following year.

"So High" received remix versions by both American producer StéLouse, and Dutch DJ San Holo. At the time of its release in 2014, the song caught the attention of people such as Australian DJ Elizabeth Rose, labelmate Becky G, and American singer Billie Eilish when she was just 12 years old. The official music video has amassed 37 million views on YouTube as of November 2020. On September 19, 2014, an unplugged version of the song was uploaded via Doja Cat's YouTube account. Doja singing, a piano played by Cambo, and a violin played by Chargaux were the only instruments in this version.
Music video
The music video, inspired by Doja's time growing up on an ashram, was filmed on October 13, 2013 (the lotus and Krishna scene), in the salt flats of California. The desert scene was filmed on February 23, 2014. The video was later released on March 25, 2014, where she's seen portraying the Hindu goddess Krishna, flowing her arms hypnotically while seated on a lotus-styled throne. Doja revealed in an interview with VladTV in August 2018 that she sees the video as a somewhat "high budget" project for an artist as small as herself, and that she came out of pocket for it. [1] In an interview with Rolling Stone in December 2021, she responded to criticism she received as of gaining popularity, with people accusing her of appropriating Hindu culture. She stated "If I knew not to do that, I probably wouldn’t have done it. When something is so sacred to many people, I think it’s good to be more sensitive about it and just kind of back away.”[2]

- Doja sang a bit of the song during the game "Song Associaton" with ELLE in December 2019, where artists have to sing a song containing a word they're given. Doja's word was "high". [3]
- In an interview with Rolling Stone in December 2021, Doja viewed her critical opinion on the song, stating “It’s some of the laziest lyrics I’ve ever written [...] I don’t love the vocals. However, the production, the beat, is some of the most beautiful production in music I’ve ever heard. I think that’s what kind of drew me to it to make something, put my voice on top of it, which I don’t think did it any justice.”[2]
