On June 24, 2020, Doja Cat was on Instagram live, previewing five unreleased songs: "420", "Down", "Big Ole Booty", "Ain't Shit" (later released), and "UNISEX". During the preview of "UNISEX", Doja described the song as cute and considered uploading it to SoundCloud, eventually doing so that same day.
