"Chrysalis Amiss" is the first segment of the sixty-third episode of Vampirina. It is the first half of the thirteenth episode in the third season. It premiered on October 21, 2020 alongside "Bringing Down the House".
Synopsis
While gardening, Vee learns that the cutest creepy crawlies, caterpillars, don't stay caterpillars forever.
Plot
In the garden, Vampirina brings tomb-atoes to Oxana, who states that Chef Remy Bones will need them for his spook-ghetti sauce tonight. Demi shows up, wanting to pick fruit and veggies all day. Vampirina states they want to make sure the basket is full of veggies and fruit. Demi then sniffs a ghoul gherkin and sends a caterpillar to him. Vampirina knows the creature, and is delighted over how creepy and adorable he is before calling him Crawly. Oxana states it's ghoul luck to have a Transylvanian caterpillar in the garden. They eat the wild weeds and keep soil spooky. Crawly needs to eat all of the greens so he can grow strong enough to set up his chrysalis, which is a protective shell that Crawly will wrap himself in so he can start his transformation. Vampirina is shocked, but Oxana states that it's all part of his beautiful monster-morphosis. Crawly will be ready to hatch when his chrysalis grows. Vampirina realizes why Crawly is so hungry, and decides to take him to school, but Oxana states that Crawly needs to stay where his favorite greens are, as it's his natural habitat.
Demi decides to keep an eye on Crawly. He then gets swarmed by tickle bugs with Vampirina helping, not noticing the caterpillar heading in her backpack. Vampirina later notices this, and debates whether to tell Oxana to put him back in the garden or see his transformation when Poppy, Bridget, and Edna arrive. Vampirina joins them in heading to school while putting Crawly in her caterpillar. At school, Vampirina shows her friends Crawly, but Poppy wonders if something monster-y happens. Vampirina mentions that Crawly is so tiny he won't be noticed, and he'll build a chrysalis and transform into a spooky butterfright.
However, Vampirina sees the notebook, eraser, and her backpack eaten by Crawly, who is missing. Bridget sees Crawly made a crater in Edgar's alien drawing as well as a hole in Mr. Gore's tie. Demi shows up, having lost track of Crawly, and Vampirina states he isn't the only one. Edgar then sees that Crawly ate part of a plant, and Poppy sees he ate part of the door. During lunch, Vampirina and her friends go to find Crawly before he eats the whole school.
So far, they have no luck, and Vampirina states that even when Crawly was tiny, he was eating through all of the ghoulish greens. She realizes that Crawly is eating all the green things at school since he's away from his garden. Poppy, Bridget, and Demi show examples. Vampirina and her friends follow the bite marks in the green, and she realizes that all the green stuff Crawly is eating at school is making him grow bigger than usual. They eventually find Crawly when he stands on top of a basketball rim and transforms into a chrysalis.
With the basketball team arriving, Edgar knocks over the basketball rim, causing the chrysalis to bounce all over with the team mistaking it as a basketball. Vampirina regrets bringing the caterpillar to school and away from his garden. Poppy has an idea to distract the team when Bridget sees the chrysalis glowing. Vampirina has an idea for Poppy and Edgar to get Crawly from the team and pass it to her while Bridget gives the team another glowing ball, which Demi will act as. The plan works, and Crawly's transformation into a butterfright is complete, and he flies away.
Vampirina is glad her friends rescued Crawly, but worries he's gone forever. Poppy states that Crawly will always remember Vampirina for saving him. Vampirina then saves Demi while her friends provide the team another ball. At home, Bones reveals that Oxana picked the perfect tomb-matoes for his sauce. Vampirina tells them the story of Crawly eating the green stuff at school since he was taken there before turning into a butterfright and flying away. Oxana thanks Vampirina for telling the truth, and mentions that she has a surprise: Crawly returns to the garden, having known his way there, and it will always be his home. Vampirina promises to never take any more critters to school before riding Crawly with Demi.
