The bravest is the honey badger, hippo the strongest, cheetah the fastest, and the egret – egrets have sort of binocular vision which gives them depth perception which most birds who have eyes on either side of their head don’t, so Ono our egret is the keenest of sight.
Ford Riley[1]

Egrets are a species of animal native to the Pride Lands. They feed on grubs and are preyed upon by hyenas.

History

Dawn of the Lion Guard

Ono, you are the keenest of sight.
Kion recruits Ono for the Lion Guard[src]

When Kion became the leader of the Lion Guard, he recruited Ono to be the keenest of sight. Initially, Simba disapproved of Kion's teammates, as he believed that the Lion Guard should be comprised of lions only. Despite his father's disapproval, Kion gifted his friends with Marks of the Guard and led them into battle against Janja's clan. Upon their victory, Simba conceded that they were the right animals to protect the Pride Lands and defend the Circle of Life.[2]

Ono's eye injury

Your eye will be fine. Just wear this eye patch for three days...and no craziness.
Rafiki to Ono, after the latter injures his eye[src]
EyeoftheBeholder78

Janja, Cheezi, and Chungu attacked a wildebeest herd, and the Lion Guard arrived to stop them. Though the hyenas attempted to use the dust stirred up by the wildebeests as cover for their attack, Ono spotted them from the sky and informed his teammates of their positions. Eventually, the hyenas admitted defeat and fled toward the Outlands. Kion ordered Ono to ensure that the hyenas had left the Pride Lands, and Ono followed them up a cliff, only to get dirt in his eye and fall to the ground.

The Lion Guard bore Ono to the Lair of the Lion Guard, where Rafiki constructed an eye patch for him. He warned Ono that he would have to wear the eye patch and stay out of action for three days, to Ono's dismay. Despite Kion's reassurances that the Lion Guard could get by without him, Ono attempted to prove himself by flying around the Pride Lands. In doing so, he crashed into Mwoga, and Kion advised him to return to the Lair of the Lion Guard.

2016-06-30-19 01 39

Mwoga reported on Ono's injury to his parliament, and Janja happened to overhear the conversation. Wanting to take advantage of Ono's absence, he plotted with Cheezi and Chungu to attack the Pride Lands. Together, the hyenas invaded the Pride Lands, trapped the Lion Guard in a ravine, and readied to attack a nearby herd of zebras.

Before the hyenas could harm the zebras, Ono reconvened with the Lion Guard, and Kion ordered him to warn the herd about the danger. Ono managed to move the zebras, after which Kion used the Roar of the Elders to free the Lion Guard from the ravine. They then chased the hyenas out of the Pride Lands, and Kion praised Ono for his work.[3]

Ono's meal with Fuli

Hunting? That's perfect. I was on my way to hunt with the other egrets. You should join us.
―Ono to Fuli[src]

Ono invited his friend, Fuli, to eat with his flock, and she accepted. To her dismay and disappointment, she learned that egrets ate grubs that elephants kicked up.[4]

Ono's lost crest feathers

What are all the other egrets going to say? You think they'll notice?
―Ono on his missing crest feathers[src]
2016-11-21-23 39 35

When Kion's Roar of the Elders rebounded and hit the Lion Guard, Ono lost his crest feathers. Horrified, he fretted about what the other egrets would say and if they would notice. Bunga encouraged Ono to embrace his new look, but he remained distraught and embarrassed.

Later, when the Lion Guard attempted to remove a rockslide from blocking the giraffes' watering hole, Shingo and Twiga mocked Ono for looking like an "egg-head."

2016-11-21-23 56 07

Shortly afterward, the Lion Guard attempted to help a klipspringer who was trapped on a rock in the midst of a river. In trying to cross a log to the klipspringer, the Lion Guard caused the log to break apart, and debris flew at Ono, knocking off his tail feathers. Some nearby egrets noticed and asked Ono why he was "bald on both ends," to his embarrassment.

Eventually, Ono's crest feathers began to grow back, to his delight. Even so, several members of his flock removed their crest and tail feathers, which they proudly showed off to Ono, and Beshte remarked that Ono had started a trend.[5]

Ono's apprenticeship to Hadithi

Animals of the Pride Lands, I give you Ono the egret, creator of the Ono Spin!
Hadithi[src]

One day, many Pride Lander birds gathered in a clearing in the Pride Lands. The Lion Guard arrived to investigate, and Ono called them over to a spot at the front. He explained that the birds had gathered for the return of Hadithi, the legendary eagle, who was famous for his "Hadithi Spin."

2017-03-02-01 18 40

Just then, Hadithi arrived, to much cheering from the gathered birds. Bunga decided to ask Hadithi about his famous spin, but Ono blocked his path, insisting that no one simply talked to Hadithi. He then began to list off Hadithi's accomplishments, which prompted Hadithi himself to chime in with another example. Hadithi commented that Ono seemed to know a lot about him, and a shocked Ono agreed, declaring that he was Hadithi's biggest fan. Hadithi admired Ono's devotion but pointed out that he had many adoring fans. He then boasted about his past accomplishments and how popular he was among the Pride Landers, with Ono chiming in that he had assisted with "the egret's great escape."

Afterward, Simba and Nala arrived and invited Hadithi to attend a Royal Mud Print ceremony in which he would press his talons into mud and have his prints forever preserved alongside those of other heroes. Simba continued that it was tradition for the hero to mentor a younger member of the Pride Lands. Kion nominated Ono for the position, and Simba accepted the suggestion.

2017-03-02-01 21 54

Later, Hadithi preached to a crowd of Pride Landers and said, "The higher you fly, the more they'll look up to you." Though the birds were impressed, an elephant named Zito pointed out that elephants could not fly. Ono explained that Hadithi was trying to say that all animals had challenges in their lives that required them to rise above themselves.

At another event, Hadithi finished delivering another speech, and Ono stepped up to handle crowd control. Hadithi watched, impressed, and told Ono that he was a natural. In awe, Ono requested that he be taught the Hadithi Spin, but Hadithi refused, claiming that he did not wish to ruffle his feathers before the Royal Mud Print Ceremony. However, he volunteered to watch Ono attempt the trick and correct him if he was wrong. Though nervous, Ono attempted the spin but ended up crashing into the ground. He admitted that he had forgotten to compensate for the wind, but Hadithi commented that the wind always compensated for him. However, he encouraged Ono to try again, and Ono boldly declared that he would get it right this time.

2017-03-02-01 24 13

Ono continued to attempt the Hadithi Spin and managed to work himself up to two and a half loops. He excitedly related his progress to Hadithi but got deflated when he realized that his mentor had not even been watching. Hadithi explained that he must look his best for the ceremony, then told Ono that he doubted the egret would ever be able to achieve the spin.

As Hadithi took off for the ceremony, Ono followed him and protested that Hadithi had called him a natural earlier. Hadithi explained that he had meant Ono was a natural with the crowd and that he gave the animals exactly what they wanted to hear. Ono protested that he was simply being honest, to which Hadithi scoffed. The two continued flying, and Ono spotted a group of klipspringers being trapped on the edge of a cliff by Janja, Cheezi, and Chungu. He suggested that they use the Hadithi Spin to thwart the hyenas, but Hadithi argued that Ono was not ready for such a feat. He then flew off for the ceremony, leaving Ono to deal with the crisis on his own.

2017-03-02-01 29 32

With Hadithi gone, Ono attempted to stop the hyenas using the Hadithi Spin but fell and got his wing trapped beneath a boulder. Cheezi and Chungu hungrily climbed up the cliffs to reach him, while Janja rounded up the trapped klipspringers. Meanwhile, Hadithi became so overrun with guilt that he confessed his cowardice to the Pride Landers and admitted that Ono was the true hero. He then called the Lion Guard to follow him and rescue Ono.

Once at the scene of Ono's peril, Fuli fended off Cheezi and Chungu, and started to help Ono free his wing, but Ono urged her to save the klipspringers first. Fuli relented and took off, just as Hadithi landed next to Ono. He praised Ono for his selflessness, even in the face of being trapped, and admitted that he could learn much from Ono's example. As Hadithi pried the boulder off Ono's wing, he apologized for having abandoned Ono to the hyenas and admitted that he was not a true hero. He then confessed that the Hadithi Spin was not real, to which Ono stated that he had figured that was the case. However, he boldly declared that they could still try the Hadithi Spin, then bid Hadithi follow him.

2017-03-02-01 34 41

At the same moment, Fuli guided the klipspringers to safety across a rock bridge, only for one to slip and fall. Just in time, Ono and Hadithi flew past and began to circle the hyenas, making them dizzy. Eventually, they toppled off the cliffs and landed in the water below.

That night, Ono marked the mud at Pride Rock with his own talons, and Hadithi admitted that it had been Ono who had taught him, not the other way around. He then called Ono a natural hero, and the gathered Pride Landers cheered for him. To conclude the ceremony, Hadithi announced Ono as the creator of the Ono Spin.[6]

Ono's stint as a tickbird

Wait. You want me to be Kifaru's tickbird?
―Ono to the rest of the Lion Guard[src]

The Lion Guard followed a trail of devastated trees to where Kifaru the rhinoceros had his horn stuck in a tree. After the Lion Guard freed him, he began to wander off, and they realized that he was heading straight for another tree. Ono shouted that Kifaru did not know where he was going because he did not have his tickbird and darted in front of the rhino, warning him to keep back. Ono asked Kifaru where his tickbird was, and Kifaru admitted that his tickbird, Mwenzi, had left him earlier that morning. Though the Lion Guard was confused, Ono explained that rhinos had poor eyesight and used tickbirds to help with navigation. In exchange, the tickbirds ate the ticks off the rhinos' backs.

2017-04-28-05 47 17

Kifaru lamented being unable to reach Tamasha, an event in which rhinos gathered near Lake Matope to spar together in the mud. Touched by his sorrow, Kion resolved to find Mwenzi for him. Bunga volunteered to lead Kifaru to Lake Matope so that he arrived in time to participate in Tamasha but got so distracted eating ticks that he failed to notice a cliff in their path. Just in time, Ono halted Kifaru, which impressed the rest of the Lion Guard. Ono explained that birds and rhinos had a special connection, and Kion suggested that he become Kifaru's temporary tickbird. In the meantime, they would search for Mwenzi and convince him to return to Kifaru. Ono protested the appointment but gave in when Kion reminded him that helping Kifaru would keep the Pride Lands safe.

As the Lion Guard left in search of Mwenzi, Ono began to guide Kifaru toward Lake Matope. He told Kifaru to take a right turn, but the rhino instead took a left turn. Frantically, Ono corrected him, and the two continued on their journey. As they walked, Kifaru began to grunt and snort loudly, to Ono's irritation. Eventually, Ono told Kifaru to turn right, but the rhino once more veered to the left, and Ono shouted at him to go in the opposite direction. Hurt, Kifaru commented that Mwenzi had never shouted at him. He then grew so emotional that he walked away, sobbing, and Ono was forced to apologize to him. Kifaru asked Ono if he would itch inside his ear, and Ono agreed, though he completed the job half-heartedly. Kifaru remarked that Mwenzi would never stop itching until he had been instructed to, but Ono reminded him that he was not Mwenzi. Kifaru agreed sorrowfully, then belched loudly. Annoyed, Ono muttered under his breath that he hoped the Lion Guard would find Mwenzi soon, and Kifaru chastised him for having muttered under his breath.

2017-04-28-05 52 43

Later, Ono brought jackalberry leaves to Kifaru, but the rhino complained that he only liked dark green jackalberry leaves. He then compared Ono to Mwenzi, which infuriated Ono. After a moment of cold silence, Kifaru told Ono that he should thank him, for if Ono had not been so bad at being a tickbird, Kifaru would never have realized how good a tickbird Mwenzi was. Kifaru started to amble off but collapsed on the ground, panting. He commented that the constant walking had gotten him overheated and added that Mwenzi would always make sure to keep them near a source of mud while they were traveling. Thinking quickly, Ono began to use his wings as a fan, to Kifaru's delight. Kifaru remarked that Mwenzi was too small to be able to use his wings as a fan, and Ono wondered if Kifaru had finally found something that Ono was better at than Mwenzi. Kifaru agreed, unaware that Mwenzi and the Lion Guard were listening from nearby.

Furious, Mwenzi accused the Lion Guard of having misled him and confronted Kifaru in a fury. Though Kifaru begged him to stay, Mwenzi flew away. Kifaru pointed out that Ono must serve as his tickbird from then on, to which Ono frantically took off after Mwenzi. Upon finding the tickbird near a swamp, Ono warned him that Makuu and his float frequented the area. Despite Ono's warning, Mwenzi refused to trust him and accused him of having taken his place in Kifaru's life. Ono protested that, throughout their time together, Kifaru had done nothing but complain about Ono and compare him to Mwenzi. He then questioned Mwenzi on how he had gotten Kifaru to make a right turn, and Mwenzi explained that he had simply told Kifaru to make three left turns.

2017-04-28-06 00 15

Slowly, Mwenzi began to warm up to Ono and thought back wistfully on his time with Kifaru. Eventually, Mwenzi agreed to reconcile with Kifaru. However, before the birds could leave, Makuu attacked, hurting Mwenzi's wing and knocking him into the branches of a tree. Ono managed to save Mwenzi from Makuu, then left to fetch the Lion Guard for help.

Together, the Lion Guard and Kifaru fought off Makuu's float. After the fight, Kion thanked Kifaru and Mwenzi for their help, and the two attributed their victory to each other. Kifaru informed Ono that he did not need him to serve as a tickbird anymore, and Ono happily obliged. Later, at Tamasha, Bunga asked Ono if he would serve as his tickbird, but Ono asserted that his days as a tickbird were over.[7]

Ono's stewardship of Ona

That Ono is a true hero. Which makes him the perfect bird to watch you while I build us a new nest. With hawks around here, this place will never do!
Kulinda to her egg[src]

One day, Kulinda the hamerkop witnessed Ono saving Pim from a hawk named Mpishi. Deducing that Ono would make the perfect sitter for her egg, she left her egg in his nest and left to build a nest of her own.

2017-08-02-05 25 17

Later that day, the Lion Guard led Ono back to his nest, only for him to spot Kulinda's egg among the twigs. Confused, he wondered why a hamerkop would abandon its egg, as they were typically excellent parents, and Kion resolved to find the mother and clear up the confusion. Ono commented that the egg was close to hatching and so required someone to sit on it in order to keep it warm. Bunga volunteered to keep the egg warm, but Ono worried that he would be too rough with it and decided to sit on the egg himself.

After the Lion Guard left, the egg suddenly hatched. A baby hamerkop emerged and began to imprint on Ono, to his dismay. Before long, the baby hamerkop chased a bug out of the nest, and Ono was forced to pursue her across the savanna. He continued to chase after the baby hamerkop, who strayed dangerously close to a raging river. Ono managed to save the infant just in time and proceeded to scold her for having fled from him. He tried to convince her to return to the safety of his nest, but she indicated that she was too tired for a return journey. Giving in to her demands, he led the baby hamerkop into some tall grass and fell asleep, with her tucked underneath his wing.

2017-08-02-05 34 06

Meanwhile, the Lion Guard and Kulinda arrived at Ono's nest, only to find it empty. Kulinda began to frantically call for her baby, and the baby hamerkop followed her mother's cries to Ono's nest, where the two finally met each other for the first time. Mother and daughter began to imprint on one another, and Ono watched in delight, happy to see his charge safe once more. After the imprint was complete, Kulinda thanked Ono for his help, and he warned her that baby hamerkops could get very distracted by insects. No sooner had he said this when he realized that the baby hamerkop had gone missing again, and he and the rest of Lion Guard rushed to save her from danger.

Ono scoped out the area for the baby hamerkop and spotted her wandering near the river. Fuli attempted to save the baby hamerkop from danger but arrived too late to stop her from falling into the raging water. With no time to lose, the Lion Guard and Kulinda pursued the baby hamerkop down the river, only to watch in horror as Mpishi grabbed the baby in her talons and took off for the safety of the skies.

2017-08-02-05 40 42

Kulinda and Ono attempted to thwart Mpishi's plans, but Mpishi worked together with Mwoga to keep the baby hamerkop from falling back into the Lion Guard's grasp. As Ono watched Mpishi fly, he worked out how he and Kulinda could work together, and the two flanked her from the front and the back, forcing her to drop the baby. Outmatched, Mpishi crashed unceremoniously to the ground, where she was surrounded by the Lion Guard and forced to return to her own territory.

After the rescue, Kulinda thanked Ono by naming her daughter "Ona" in his honor. The three then performed the imprinting dance together, as Ono was now considered part of their family.[8]

Christmas

Ono and his flock participated in the "The Twelve Ways of Christmas" performance.[9]

Test in the Lair of the Lion Guard

Bunga: I still think I could have found the secret passageway.
Kion: *laughs* Luckily, we had the keenest of sight with us so you didn't have to.
—Bunga and Kion, after Ono navigates the Lion Guard out of a maze[src]

After getting trapped in an underground chamber underneath the Lair of the Lion Guard, the Lion Guard found themselves lost in a maze. Using his keen eyesight, Ono guided his teammates to safety, and Kion praised him for his efforts.

2018-09-11-20 18 33

As the Lion Guard continued deeper underground, they realized that the chamber was a test in which a Lion Guard must prove its worth. Under Kion's leadership, the team reached another chamber, where Makini led them to a painting. She explained that, long ago, a group of evil lions had attempted to overtake the Pride Lands, but Askari and his Lion Guard had foiled their plans using an unstoppable force. She then led them into a chamber where there was a pool of water and yet another painting.

At first, the team could not decipher where the unstoppable force was, but then, Kion realized that it was their reflection - or the Lion Guard itself - that was the unstoppable force. Makini brought the painting to life, showing how Askari's Guard had worked together to defeat the evil lions. As one, the Guard looked up at the painting, which shifted into the symbol of the Guard, and cried out their catchphrase in determination.[10]

Vulture attack

Sometimes, you have no choice, Ono. You just have to lead.
―Hadithi, as Ono takes command of the birds of the Pride Lands[src]

When fiery sticks began raining from the sky, the Lion Guard rushed to protect a herd of giraffes. In the midst of the attack, Ono attempted to find the source of the fiery sticks, but the high altitude forced him to return to the ground. This gave Beshte the idea to talk to Anga, a high-flying martial eagle.

2019-04-23-00 22 31

The Lion Guard eventually found Anga in a grove of trees, and she agreed to help them find the source of the fiery sticks. Just then, another attack began, and Anga and Ono took off to investigate. As they flew higher and higher, Ono was forced to retreat, while Anga soared ahead. Once above the clouds, she spotted Mzingo and his parliament dropping fiery sticks onto the Pride Lands.

Anga reported what she had seen to the Lion Guard, and Kion suggested that they rally the kingdom's birds to help stop the vultures. Ono suggested asking Hadithi for help, which excited Anga. Together, she and Ono departed to find Hadithi, during which she taught him how to fly as she did.

2019-04-23-00 40 17

Eventually, Anga and Ono found Hadithi surrounded by a crowd of adoring fans. Ono implored Hadithi to help the Lion Guard, and he agreed, leading his followers to where the Lion Guard had gathered to plan their next move. Once the birds and the Lion Guard had convened, they took off to thwart another vulture attack, this time over the Maumivu Thorn Patch. During the ensuing fight, Anga got wounded, and Hadithi and Ono rushed to save her. However, Hadithi got attacked by vultures and ended up falling into the thorn patch below.

With Hadithi out of commission, Ono took up the mantle of leader and rallied the birds of the Pride Lands for another assault. Together, the Pride Lander birds rounded up the vultures, and Kion used his Roar of the Elders to banish them back to the Outlands.[11]

Battle for the Pride Lands

Bunga's right. I'm not keenest of sight. But I know who is. Anga, you should replace me on the Guard.
―Ono[src]

For seasons, the Lion Guard kept Scar's army from invading the Pride Lands. Eventually, Simba decided to put an end to the attacks by invading the Outlands, and Ono rallied the Pride Lands' birds for the upcoming assault.

2019-08-15-21 50 43

One night, Scar's army set fire to Pride Rock, and Ono alerted Anga to the situation. Along with Hadithi, she carried the royal family safely from the promontory to the ground below. Scar's spirit soon appeared in the flames and demanded that the Pride Landers abandon their kingdom. Despite Scar's threats, Simba resolved to carry on with the planned assault.

The next day, the Pride Landers invaded the Outlands, and the Lion Guard entered the volcano to confront Scar. In the midst of the confrontation, Ushari lunged at Kion, but Bunga intercepted the attack, sending them both plummeting toward the lava. Before Bunga could meet his demise, Ono dove in after him and carried him to safety.

2019-08-15-22 31 46

After leaving the volcano, Ono realized that his vision remained hazy, and the Guard decided to take him to Rafiki. After looking over Ono's injuries, Rafiki concluded that the volcano's fumes had damaged his eyesight. In the face of Ono's disappointment, Rafiki described a place of healing called the Tree of Life, where both Kion and Ono could seek treatment. Despite his poor vision, Ono was able to memorize the paintings that depicted the route to the Tree of Life.

Realizing that he could no longer serve as the Guard's keenest of sight, Ono asked Anga to take his place. When she accepted, Kion appointed her to the Guard, and Ono's Mark of the Guard disappeared. However, Kion decided that Ono still had a place on the Guard and so bestowed on him a new mark for being the Pride Lands' smartest. The Guard and Makini then left for the Tree of Life, with Ono's flock saluting him as he rode past on Beshte's back.[12]

Lion Guard's journey through the marsh

I can't see, remember? So, even if I flew out of here, I wouldn't know where to go next.
―Ono to Makini[src]
Marsh52

While traveling through a marsh, the Lion Guard was approached by mysterious creatures in the grass. Fearful, Makini grabbed Ono and fled to safety, ignoring his protests that they did not even know if there was a threat. By the time he was able to get through to her, they were out of sight of their friends. At that moment, Makini spotted a marsh light and pursued it, despite Ono's attempts to stop her.

The pair ended up falling into a cavern beneath the marsh, and Makini apologized for having failed to heed Ono. As they were attempting to find a way out, Makini suggested that Ono fly away, and he wearily reminded her about his damaged vision. As he attempted to think up a different solution, Makini grated on his nerves with her constant talking. One of her escape attempts started to flood the cave, and the pair fled into a pair of tunnels to escape.

Marsh361

After disturbing a flock of bats, the pair hit upon the idea of following them out of the tunnels. Ono attempted to mimic their echolocation but was unable to do so. However, he realized that Makini's voice was perfect for the task, and so, she helped guide the pair to safety using her voice.

Before long, they emerged on ground level near their friends, and Ono identified the mysterious creatures from before as mongooses. He praised Makini for having looked after him, and the group continued their journey.[13]

Mama Binturong's plot

Even if you're not the keenest of sight, you are the keenest of insight. And you'll always be part of the Lion Guard, no matter what.
―Kion to Ono[src]
Ginterbong224

Eventually, the Lion Guard reached the Tree of Life.[14] One day, Nirmala informed Ono that it was time for his eyesight to be healed. Meanwhile, Mama Binturong plotted to invade the Tree of Life by pretending to seek sanctuary from Makucha and his army. She added that she would have to avoid Bunga, as he was the only member of the Lion Guard who might recognize her. The army enacted the plan, and the Night Pride fell for it, accepting Mama Binturong for healing at the Tree of Life.

As the Lion Guard headed for the Tree of Life to check on Ono's healing, Bunga suddenly got inspired to challenge his new friend, Binga, to a stink contest. As he headed off to find his friend, the rest of the team continued on their way. Together, the Lion Guard and Mama Binturong were led into the Tree of Life, where Janna accepted Mama Binturong for healing. Not wanting to give herself away, Mama Binturong introduced herself as a "ginterbong," which confused Ono. She then asked for a tour of the territory, to which Janna explained that the Night Pride rested during the daytime.

Ginterbong344

Afterward, Janna channeled the Tree of Life's powers to heal Ono's eyesight. Ono was delighted, but Janna warned him that his vision would never be as good as it once was. Outside, Ono saw that Janna was right, as he could no longer see in perfect detail. Anga instead used her vision to locate Bunga, who was with Binga.

On their way to meet Bunga, the Lion Guard ran into Mama Binturong. They invited her to meet Bunga, but she declined and climbed up a tree to rest. Ono watched in confusion, wondering why she was no longer limping. The team then met Binga, and Beshte explained that Kion was still healing with Nirmala. Mama Binturong spied on the conversation and formulated a plan to defeat the Lion Guard and the Night Pride. Before she left, Ono witnessed her steal tuliza from a pika.

Ginterbong401

Mama Binturong returned to her allies and instructed them to kill Janna while she distracted the Night Pride. The plan soon went into motion, with the Night Pride falling for Mama Binturong's cries for help. In the meantime, Makucha, Chuluun, and Ora snuck over the border. Ullu the owl informed the Lion Guard of Mama Binturong's peril, and they resolved to help her. However, Ono realized that Mama Binturong had called Chuluun by name in her cries for help, which indicated that they were working together. The Lion Guard headed to the Tree of Life instead and thwarted Makucha, Chuluun, and Ora.

After the incident, Rani praised Ono for his quick thinking, and Kion noted that Ono was truly the smartest member of the Lion Guard.[15]

Battle of the Lion Guards

Rafiki: And as the Pride Lands' smartest...
Ono: I'll be the judge.
—Ono and Rafiki, at the start of the Battle of the Lion Guards[src]
Return302

Upon returning to the Pride Lands, the Lion Guard discovered that Vitani had formed her own Lion Guard in their absence. At first, the two Guards fought for dominance, until Thurston suggested that they compete for which team was better. Both Guards agreed to participate in the competition.

Later, Rafiki announced the Battle of the Lion Guards to a crowd of Pride Landers at Mizimu Grove. He explained that there would be five competitions to determine who was the fiercest, strongest, fastest, keenest of sight, and bravest in the Pride Lands. Ono was named the judge.

Return454

As the event kicked off, Ono spectated and declared the rules and winners of each challenge. Eventually, after both teams tied, Ono announced that the win would be determined by Kion and Vitani's challenge. Vitani called for a mashindano, or a physical fight, and Kion warned her that she did not stand a chance against the Roar. However, she asserted that she could be the fiercest without the Roar. Realizing that Vitani was the true leader of the Lion Guard, Kion relinquished his team's duties to Vitani and her pride.

At that moment, the spirit of Askari appeared in the clouds overhead and praised Kion for his decision. Kion pointed out that he was no longer the leader of the Lion Guard, but Askari reminded him that the Tree of Life still needed the Roar's protection. The rest of Kion's Lion Guard agreed to protect the Tree of Life, and the Marks of the Night Pride appeared on their shoulders. They then travelled to the Tree of Life and formally joined the Night Pride.[16]
