Echolocation. The bats make a sound, then listen for the echo. Depending on how loud it is, the bats know which tunnel to take. If it's a loud echo, it's a dead-end. But if the echo fades away, then there's an opening, and that's the right tunnel.

Bats are a species of animal native to the marsh and the Pride Lands.

History

Termite infestation

The whole thing's coming down! We gotta wake up the bats!
Kion, as the Mekundu bats' tree collapses[src]

One day, Ono reported to the rest of the Lion Guard that the Mekundu bats were asleep inside a collapsing tree. The team hastened to the tree and yelled for the bats to wake up, to no avail. Eventually, Bunga climbed inside the tree and woke the bats up, which caused them to swarm out of the tree. Once the bats had gone, the tree collapsed, and the Lion Guard realized that it had been weakened due to a termite infestation.[1]

Makini and Ono's trip to the marsh

Bats. Why did it have to be bats?
―Ono[src]

While in the marsh, Makini and Ono fell into a deep hole. The two began to explore a network of underground tunnels, during which they got swarmed by bats. Once the bats had gone, Ono got the idea to use echolocation to navigate out of the underground.[2]

Physical characteristics

Bats are small- to medium-sized creatures, with large ears, pig-like snouts, and wings. Most bats in the Pride Lands have brown fur, with patches of white on their foreheads and chests, and brown eyes.[1] Bats in the marsh have cream and brown fur with pink wings.[2]

Sociocultural characteristics

The bats make clicking noises like I was doing, but they're louder and higher-pitched, so they create clear echoes.
―Ono[src]

In the Pride Lands, bats live in groups inside hollow trees.[1] In the marsh, they live in underground tunnels. Bats are known to navigate dark spaces by using echolocation.[2]
