Wildebeests (also known as gnus) are a species of animal native to the Pride Lands. They feed on grass and are preyed upon by hyenas.

History

Simba's presentation

Several wildebeests attended the presentation of Simba at Pride Rock.[1]

Stampede

Stampede, in the gorge. Simba's down there!

As part of his plot to assassinate both Mufasa and Simba, Scar led Simba to the gorge and told him to wait there for a surprise from his father. Meanwhile, Shenzi, Banzai, and Ed lurked on the fringes of a wildebeest herd, awaiting Scar's signal. Though Banzai longed to eat a wildebeest, Shenzi forced him to remain put. Once Scar had appeared on a nearby ridge, the trio chased the wildebeests into the gorge toward Simba.

While Simba fled the wildebeests, Scar informed Mufasa that his son was in peril and led him to the gorge. Once at the scene, Mufasa leaped into the stampede and rescued Simba. Before he could reach safety himself, he got pulled back into the herd. Eventually, he leaped onto the side of the gorge and began to climb, only for Scar to intercept him and throw him back into the stampede to his death.[1]

At the same moment, Timon and Pumbaa got caught in the stampede. As they ran, they ended up on top of a wildebeest, which halted abruptly, throwing them into a nearby river.[2]

Kiara's presentation

Several wildebeests attended the presentation of Kiara at Pride Rock.[3]

Bunga the Wise

That bearded look's out. You gnus ought to shave 'em.
―Bunga to some wildebeests[src]

When Bunga proclaimed himself a wise sage, several Pride Landers came to him for advice. Bunga advised the wildebeests in his audience to shave their beards.[4]

Janja's first attack

One day, Janja and his minions, Cheezi and Chungu, started a wildebeest stampede in the Pride Lands. As the Lion Guard searched for them among the stampede, Cheezi and Chungu snuck up behind an infant wildebeest. Before they could harm the young one, Ono warned Beshte and Bunga, and they chased the hyenas off. Eventually, after Kion kicked Janja into the horns of a passing wildebeest, he ordered his clanmates to flee.[5]

Janja's second attack

I planned to go after those wildebeests. With all this mud, they'll never outrun us.
―Janja to his clanmates[src]

After a rainstorm, Janja led his clan into the Pride Lands, where he explained that all the mud would prevent a herd of wildebeests from running away from them. However, he ended up slipping down a muddy slope into the paws of the Lion Guard. Cheezi inadvertently revealed Janja's plan to attack the wildebeests, and so, Kion used the Roar of the Elders to banish the hyenas from the Pride Lands.[6]

Hippo lanes

Several wildebeests used Beshte's hippo lanes to cross the Flood Plains.[7]

Simba's nightmare

One night, Simba had a traumatic nightmare about the wildebeest stampede and Mufasa's death.[3]

Kovu's exile

Several wildebeests helped drive Kovu from the Pride Lands following his exile by Simba.[3]

Marriage of Kovu and Kiara

Several wildebeests attended the wedding ceremony of Kovu and Kiara at Pride Rock.[3]
