I'm free! Thanks, guys. Ooh! Is that another acacia tree?
―Shingo, after the Lion Guard frees his neck and tongue from an acacia tree[src]

Shingo is a male giraffe. He is a member of Twiga's herd.

When Bunga claimed to be a sage, Shingo came to him for advice. He became so enthralled with Bunga that he began to follow the honey badger everywhere and sing praises to his wisdom. Eventually, the dam that Bunga had supposedly fixed burst, which endangered the Pride Landers. This forced Kion to take charge and use the Roar of the Elders to save them.

Later, when the spirit of Scar manifested before the Pride Landers, Shingo and his herd considered leaving the Pride Lands for good. However, Kion showed the Pride Landers that a baobab tree seed had survived Scar's fire, and so the animals decided to remain in the kingdom and resist Scar's attacks.

Biography

Early life

Shingo lived in the Pride Lands. He was a member of Twiga's herd.[1]

Baobab Ball with Kion and Bunga

When Kion and Bunga were playing Baobab Ball, they ran alongside Shingo and his herd. The two friends leaped into the air, and Shingo watched their progress. At one point, he even bumped the ball with his snout.[2]

Habitat change

Mashindano... Mashindano...
―Shingo, shortly before Makuu and Pua's mashindano[src]

Shingo watched the mashindano between Makuu and Pua. Later, he and his herd got forced into Nyani Grove due to Makuu invading Big Springs and thus upsetting the kingdom's habitats. The Lion Guard eventually resolved the issue, and so Shingo's herd returned to Acacia Grove.[3]

Bunga the Wise

Bunga the Wise, everyone thinks I'm stuck up because my head's so high up in the sky. What do I do?
―Shingo[src]

During a flood, Bunga got an idea to dam up Lake Kiziwa. After the plan worked, Shingo and Thurston approached and complimented Bunga on his wisdom. While the animals were talking, the dam began to leak, and Bunga blocked it up with a stick, which once more impressed Shingo and Thurston.

Later that day, Shingo stood in line to get advice from Bunga the Wise. He told Bunga that the other animals believed he was stuck-up because his head was so high in the sky and wondered what he could do to fix the problem. Bunga simply told him to tie a knot in his neck. Satisfied, Shingo left.

When Bunga gathered an entourage of followers, Shingo joined in, singing Bunga's praises alongside the other Pride Landers. The rest of the Lion Guard approached, and Kion told Bunga that he gave bad advice. This made Shingo gasp in horror. Timon reminded Kion that the dam had been Bunga's idea, and Shingo whooped with approval. However, the dam broke before the Pride Landers' eyes, and they promptly fled for cover.

Alongside the other panicked animals, Shingo followed the Lion Guard into a canyon, where the group got trapped in a dead-end. Shingo turned to Bunga for advice, but Bunga admitted that he did not know what to do and asked Kion for help. Thinking quickly, Kion used the Roar of the Elders to direct the floodwaters backward and thus save the trapped animals.

After the water receded, Shingo joined the other Pride Landers at the new water hole that the floodwaters had created.[4]

Consoled by Simba

Shingo reacted with annoyance to fleas in his fur, and Simba commented that his royal duty to console giraffes when they got fleas was not enjoyable. Zazu added cheekily that the fleas tended to spread.[5]

Kupatana

When Reirei's pack continuously stole from the Pride Landers, Shingo and several other Pride Landers gathered around them angrily. Later, Shingo and his herd attended the Kupatana celebration. During the festivities, Reirei's pack attacked the Pride Landers, and the giraffes helped the Lion Guard fend them off. After Simba sent the jackals away, the celebration continued.[6]

False alarm

Hyena attack?
―Shingo[src]
Noreasontobeafraid

While grazing, Shingo overheard Mtoto and his friends yelling about a hyena attack. Terrified, Shingo and several other Pride Landers hid by a rock until the Lion Guard arrived. When it was revealed that the young ones had simply been pretending to be hyenas, Shingo grumbled about the kids' antics and walked away.

Later, Beshte assured a small group of Pride Landers, including Shingo, that they did not need to be afraid. However, Thurston asserted that zebras were the most delicious animals in the Pride Lands and that the hyenas knew it. Shingo scoffed at Thurston's claim, but Thurston simply told Shingo to "deal with it."[7]

Saved by the Lion Guard

I was just trying to get to the last of the acacia leaves. They're so good.
―Shingo, after he gets his neck and tongue stuck in a tree[src]

Ono informed the Lion Guard that Shingo was stuck in a tree in Ukuni Woods. The Lion Guard journeyed to Ukuni Woods, where they found Shingo with his neck and tongue tangled in the branches of an acacia tree. Bunga climbed up the trunk and carefully pried Shingo's neck and tongue free, which allowed him to escape the branches of the acacia tree. Once free, Shingo proceeded to graze on yet another acacia tree.[8]

Blocked water hole

Hey! Wait your turn, egghead.
―Shingo to Ono[src]

Shingo and his herd were unable to access their water hole when it got blocked by boulders. The Lion Guard arrived to help, and Shingo and Twiga laughed at Ono for his missing crest feathers. After Beshte cleared the boulders, Shingo went to drink the water.[1]

Royal Mud Print Ceremony

Several Pride Landers, including Shingo, gathered near Pride Rock to attend Hadithi's Royal Mud Print Ceremony. However, in the middle of the ceremony, Hadithi admitted that he had abandoned Ono to danger, and the Lion Guard rushed off to rescue their friend. After Ono was saved, he got honored with the ceremony instead.[9]

Mashindano

Shingo spectated the mashindano between Kiburi and Makuu.[10]

Dispute with Vuruga Vuruga's herd

We were here first.
―Shingo, during a fight between his herd and Vuruga Vuruga's herd[src]

Shingo and his herd got into an argument with Vuruga Vuruga's herd over Big Springs due to a severe drought. Kion defused the situation. Later, Shingo and his herd traveled to Dhahabu Grove, where they had access to drinking water.[11]

Kumbuka

Shingo attended Simba's Kumbuka celebration at Pride Rock.[12]

Kilio Valley fire

After Ma Tembo's herd was ousted from Kilio Valley due to a fire, Kion requested that the herd temporarily stay with Twiga and her herd. At first, Shingo was receptive to the elephants staying in his home, but once they started eating entire branches off the trees, both Shingo and Twiga appealed to Kion to take them elsewhere.[13]

Disturbed by Shujaa

Shingo and his herd were drinking from the watering hole when Shujaa arrived and frightened them away. Kion promptly sent Beshte and Ono to calm the giraffes.[14]

Dhahabu's visit

Shingo was present when Dhahabu arrived at Pride Rock to renew a water treaty with Simba.[15]

Scar's attacks

Fire! No!
―Shingo, as fiery sticks fall from the sky[src]
2019-03-31-01 28 19

At Mizimu Grove, Rafiki and Simba announced Makini's mpando mpaya. In the midst of the celebration, the Army of Scar attacked, and the Pride Landers rose up to defend themselves. The battle paused when Scar appeared in the flames and threatened to overtake the entirety of the Pride Lands. Frightened by Scar's unexpected appearance, the remaining Pride Landers, including Shingo and his herd, fled Mizimu Grove.

Once the Lion Guard had calmed the Pride Landers, Simba approached and admitted that he had had knowledge of Scar's return for some time. The herds deliberated whether they should leave the Pride Lands, and Simba told them to inform him of their decision the following morning at Pride Rock.

The next day, Kion implored the Pride Landers to follow him to Mizimu Grove before they decided to leave the kingdom. The herds followed Kion to Mizimu Grove, where Makini's baobab tree seed had survived the fire. This inspired the Pride Landers to remain in the kingdom and work together to defeat Scar.[16]

Later, when fiery sticks began raining from the sky, the Lion Guard rushed to protect Shingo and his herd.[17]

Lion Guard's trip to the Tree of Life

When the Lion Guard left the Pride Lands for the Tree of Life, Shingo bid them farewell alongside several other Pride Landers.[18] After the Lion Guard returned from their trip, Anga flew over Shingo, who was grazing with his herd.[19]

Battle of the Lion Guards

Shingo watched the announcement of the Battle of the Lion Guards. During the competition, he spectated Beshte's individual contest.[19]

Kion's coronation

Shingo attended Kion's wedding to Rani at the Tree of Life.[19]

Physical appearance

Shingo is a tall, slender, and moderately built giraffe. His fur is pale brown and dotted with orange spots, and he has a brown mane that extends up his neck. His muzzle is dark brown, and his eyes are brown.[2]

Personality and traits

BungatheWise432

Shingo is a bit excitable and gullible, as he bought into Bunga's purported wisdom without a second thought.[4] Additionally, he is somewhat dim and slow-witted, and does not learn from his mistakes. Despite getting his neck stuck in an acacia tree, he immediately started to graze from another acacia tree upon getting freed.[8] He harbors a deep-rooted fear of hyenas and will go to great lengths to avoid them.[7] Though usually friendly, he can be rude and derisive, such as when he called Ono an "egghead" for losing his crest feathers.[1]

Trivia

  • Shingo's name means "neck" in Swahili.[21]
