Hot Spot is the leader of the emergency Autobot team called Protectobots, and a supporting character in the Transformers franchise. He transforms into a Mitsubishi fire engine and forms into the torso of Defensor. Hot Spot is an engernetic and leader who leads by example. He is always active and wants his troops, First Aid, Blades, Streetwise, and Groove to be active too.
He was voiced by Dan Gilvezan, who also voiced Bumblebee, Outback and Skids, as well as Spider-Man in Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends, Colossus in Pryde of the X-Men and Slipstream in G.I. Joe.
Biography
Cartoon
Hot Spot first appeared in the late second season episode "The Revenge of Bruticus", leading the Protectobots on Earth and protecting citizens of Earth when the planet was pushed closer to the sun. In the season finale, "B.O.T.", he again led the Protectobots in helping out with a fire, and later in attempting to defend the Ark from a Decepticon attack.
Hot Spot made his first third season appearance in "Fight or Flee", as part of the Autobot expedition to end the Decepticon occupation of Paradron. He had a large role in "Ghost in the Machine", when first he and Groove operated Cybertron's defences and then, together with Ultra Magnus and Springer, travelled into Unicron's head, managing to set off some explosives that sent it hurtling away from Cybertron. In "The Ultimate Weapon", Hot Spot convinced First Aid to return to the Autobots after he initially quit for failing to prevent Swindle stealing Metroplex's transformation cog. In "The Return of Optimus Prime", Hot Spot and the other Autobots transported Jessica Morgan to hospital after she was injured in a fight between the Technobots and Terrorcons.
He made his last appearance in "The Rebirth" among the Autobots helping Ultra Magnus defend Cybertron.
Comics
Hot Spot first appeared in the Marvel UK-exclusive story "Second Generation", in which the Creation Matrix showed Optimus Prime and Buster Witwicky a vision of the future, where Hot Spot let the Protectobots in investigating a stricken power plant, confronting the Stunticons and forming Defensor for the first time.
He made his first Marvel US appearance in Issue #24, where he and the other Protectobots accompanied Optimus Prime to Energy Futures Industries, where they tried to stop Megatron and the Combaticons steal the hydrothermacline. Battling their opponents in virtual reality, Hot Spot fought Onslaught and his staying true to the Autobot code caused the computer-generated characters to assist him. However, a cheat code used by Megatron and Optimus Prime breaking his own code to win saw Optimus Prime accepting defeat and allowing himself to be destroyed as punishment, with Hot Spot and the others transporting his body away. In Issue #27, Hot Spot was part of the gathering of senior Autobots who met to choose a new leader.
In Issue #32, Hot Spot was sent out with the Protectobots by new Autobot leader Grimlock to apprehend deserters Blaster and Goldbug. They ended up tracking them down at the same time as both the Combaticons and the human anti-robot team RAAT. Car salesman Big Steve Ludwig tried to suggest they bid for the captive Autobots, but when Swindle instead tried to shoot Big Steve, a fight broke out between the Autobots and Decepticons, during which RAAT left with the disabled Throttlebots. Although Blaster helped defeat the Combaticons, Hot Spot refused to help him rescue his friends and instead placed him under arrest. While transporting Blaster back to the Ark in Issue #35, Hot Spot and his team came under attack from the Combaticons again and were defeated. After Blaster overpowered Bruticus and defended a group of human children, Hot Spot noted he couldn't arrest someone better at protecting humans than him and let Blaster go. Hot Spot was apparently left behind on Earth at the end of the story. The following issue showed him among the Autobots on the Ark, but the issue is famous for featuring several background Autobots who shouldn't be there, so this may have been a mistake.
His only subsequent appearance is in the Marvel UK annual text story "Prime Bomb", where he and the other Protectobots fail to stop the Combaticons raiding a military base or Dreadwind and Darkwing stealing Optimus Prime's personality disc. The post-movie version of the character appears in "The Legacy of Unicron", taking part in a large-scale battle with the Decepticons on Cybertron.

- His fire truck mode can travel at speeds up to 90 mph (~ 145 km/h) for the range of 600 miles (~ 966 km) and has a host of fire-fighting & rescue capabilities. This mode can alter the ladder position to act as an emergency vehicle carrier if needed.
- He also has a repair bay form which is equipped with 2 mechanical arms.
- Hot Spot has incredible physical strength & endurance along with significant intelligence & above average skill. He can press up to 60,000 pounds (30 US tons ~ 26.79 Imperial tons ~ 27.22 Tonnes). His armor is made of vanadium-steel alloy, which renders him invunerable to the temperature up to 5,000°F (2760°C).
- He becomes the torso & head for the gestalt form of the team - Defensor.
- In some occasions, he combines with his teammates, Heatrock & Skyfeather to form a special gestalt known as God Guardian.
Arsenal: Hot Spot has significantly above average firepower
- His fire truck mode has a hose-line which can shoot high-pressure streams of any non-corrosive liquid (including water, oil or alcohol) with the effective range of 1,200 feet (~ 366 meters).
- His pair of Fireball Cannons (which is usable for both modes) can launch blue fireballs of 2000°F (~ 1093°C) at the range of 1.5 miles (~ 2414 meters).
Weaknesses
- Aside Streetwise who is doggedly determined, few of his team can live up his tireless example & standard of operating efficency.
- While he is impervious to his Fireball Cannons, overusing them may cause spilling the fuel and cause fire-damage to the nearby environment.
- Sometimes, the ladder of his fire truck mode jams & lock into position when extended, which greatly affect its reliability.
- He also has below average speed, which is compensated by his strength & armor.
