Seaspray is the name of several fictional characters in the Transformers series. They are all Autobot hovercrafts. Seaspray's biography painted him as even more at home on Earth than any of the other Autobots. Earth's natural oceans are a far cry from Cybertron, and Seaspray's job is to explore as much of it as possible. He loves the thrill of naval battles, despite the risks involved, and hates having to assume his robot mode on land.
Transformers: Generation 1
Seaspray, like many other season 2 Transformers, originally appeared in the episode "Dinobot Island Part 2".
His most prominent appearance was in the episode "Sea Change", when he was sent alongside Bumblebee, Perceptor and Cosmos to the planet Traal in response to a distress signal. The Decepticon tyrant Deceptitran had enslaved the planet, and the arrival of Megatron's forces only worsened the situation. Seaspray then fell in love with Alana, one of the leaders of the resistance. After the two performed a daring rescue of the captured Bumblebee, Seaspray learned of the Well of Transformation, an energy source that transformed living beings into whatever they desired. Seaspray entered, and emerged a Traal male. Although Alana fell in love with him, an attack by Rumble convinced him he would be more use to the Traal as an Autobot, and entered the pool once again. Although it was successful, Alana emerged as a robot too. The two defeated Deceptitran and forced Megatron's forces to flee. The two (Alana having returned to being human) then departed into the sunset. Seaspray spoke with a gurgling tone in his voice.
Like many other Transformers from the first two seasons, Seaspray was gradually phased out in the third season. He last appeared in "Thief in the Night."
Seaspray was the spokesbot in an unreleased Transformers "Knowing is half the Battle" public service announcement where he taught kids to always wear a lifejacket on a boat.
Comics
Seaspray was introduced in Issue #17 as one of the Autobot resistance cell led by Perceptor on Cybertron. Like most of the cell, he backed Blaster in searching for the missing informer Scrounge. They failed to save Scrounge but did manage to get the information he had obtained, that a group of Autobots and Decepticons led by Optimus Prime and Megatron were active on Earth. The group launched an attack to destroy the Decepticons' space bridge before they could join up with their Earthen brethren but were only partially successful and were forced to cross the damaged space bridge to Earth.
As revealed in Issue #21, Seaspray and the others were immediately taken prisoner by the anti-robot human organisation RAAT and dismantled. They, and other captive Autobots, were eventually restored after helping stop the Battlechargers. In the UK-exclusive story "Fallen Angel", the group encountered the future Decepticon leader Galvatron, who quickly incapacitated most of them. They finally joined up with the main Earth Autobots on the Ark in "Resurrection".
Seaspray would make occasional background appearances among the Earth Autobots, witnessing Ratchet's attempts to revive Optimus Prime in Issue #26, taking part in the battle with Trypticon in Issue #27, welcoming Blaster back to the Ark in Issue #36 and witnessing the duel between Blaster and Grimlock on the moon in Issue #41.
He made his last appearance in Issue #51, helping clear away those left deactivated during the Underbase Saga. He was mentioned as being deactivated in "The Greatest Gift of All", where he was one of the Autobots Optimus Prime considered reviving with a shard of the Creation Matrix.
Transformers Prime
While he does not appear in this series in person, Seaspray is referred to as a member of the Wreckers. as mentioned in Loose Cannons, Seaspray contacted Wheeljack durint the latter's solo travels through space, but was killed when the Decepticon Dreadwing rigged his ship with explosives and blew it up. Seaspray's death motivated Wheeljack into hunting down Dreadwing.
Trivia
- Cut plans for Transformers: Prime would've retcon his death being ejected out of his ship and would've joined the main cast.
