"And now you're gonna get smashed."
Terence, Angry Birds Comics #12 (2016)

Terence,[note 3][11] originally known as the Big Brother,[4] is a character that appears in the Angry Birds series. He is a giant bird and a member of the Angry Birds, his character shrouded in mystery due to him hardly speaking and usually having a serious stare. Due to his size and skill, Terence is a very destructive bird, which coupled with his terrifying appearance makes him a valuable asset of the Angry Birds. The character debuted in the Big Setup chapter in the original Angry Birds, where he surfaced to rescue the flock's eggs after the other birds were kidnapped by the pigs.

Much of Terence's early life remains unknown. When he was a hatchling, he was traumatized after witnessing the conflict between the birds and the Piggy kingdom, resulting in his stern look of today. He remains haunted by his past and harbors a strong resentment towards the pigs. When enraged, he can partially sink himself in the ground, creating devastating cracks nearby that can easily destroy pig structures. Being feared by pigs and birds alike, Terence lives in self-imposed isolation from the other Angry Birds, who see him as a threat to the eggs due to his unpredictability.

Appearance

Terence is a large, limbless bird who looks very similarly to Red. His feathers are pinkish red and his stomach is beige. He has six darker spots of various sizes spread unevenly around his body, and his eyebags are of the same color. He also has two wrinkles on his face. In Angry Birds Toons, his face and tail are smaller, making him look even larger, and the two wrinkles on his forehead are longer. His plumage is also of a more vibrant crimson than it was originally.

Purple Bird

Purple Bird was a bird that was planned to be one of the original playable characters in the original Angry Birds. Little is known about him other than the aforementioned fact and a different Purple Bird resembling Terence would appear in an earlier piece of concept art. His earliest design resembles Terence, the feathers on his body are colored violet, except for a single magenta spot near his face. His crests and tail feathers are the same color as his body. His beak is also colored yellow, the top part is triangular, while the bottom part is circular.

The Purple Bird later on got a redesign to have a pink-colored stomach, two pink lines on both sides of his face, resembling face paint, and thick, dark purple eyebrows. He also has a cocky expression on his face, as well as a grin. His beak is colored orange, with the upper part being long and curved at the tip. The three crest feathers on his head are black, and his tail feathers are also black but are high up behind him.

While it is likely that Terence could have been purple at one point, the idea was seemingly dropped early on as the graphics were being cleaned up due to the radical difference of the original depiction of a purple bird (the one resembling Terence) and the one discovered on a website detailing some aspects to the development of Angry Birds.[1] This is also supported by the fact that an earlier graphic for Terence exists in The Big Setup where he appears much closer to his final interpretation.

Personality

Angry Birds Trilogy bird biography artwork 17

Terence is characterized by his stoic and enigmatic personality, always maintaining a serious face.[16] He is a bird of few words, preferring to let his intense stare and single expression speak for him.[3] His perpetually furrowed brow serves as a multi-purpose tool for conveying his emotions. Terence relishes being in solitude, studying his environment and often going on serene evening walks by the lake. He also takes pleasure in engaging in staring contests, but is said to not be very fond of "too many [things] to list", including fun. He possesses an insatiable appetite and takes great pleasure in indulging in fresh mackerel, displaying a very slight smile when savoring his favorite food.[10] After a large meal, he retires to rest, with a curious sleeping position with his face firmly planted against the ground.[10][11][17]

Terence's childhood was marked by trauma and violence, leaving him deeply scarred and haunted by memories of conflict with the pigs to this day and almost completely unable to speak a word. As a result, pigs are the primary source of his anger; just seeing or thinking about one makes him experience negative emotions and mental distress[4] (although some sources have claimed that he merely finds pigs a minor irritation[9]). Terence enjoys harming the pigs,[11] but dislikes being angry. Despite that, his deep-seated hatred for them makes it an inevitable part of his routine.[4]

Because of his unpredictable violent streak and fears that he might harm the eggs, Terence lives in self-imposed isolation within an abandoned pig fortress, removed from the rest of the Angry Birds.[4] He has also been described as very anti-social for this reason.[3] Terence has shown a childlike interest in imitating Santa Claus and displays a deep curiosity about him in the holidays.[13]

Game appearances

Angry Birds

In the original Angry Birds, and its Chinese version, Terence makes his first appearance in the first level of The Big Setup as the main protagonist of the episode, or in the seventh level of Tutorial in the newer versions of the game. In the former, being the only bird who was not kidnapped by the pigs at the moment, Terence made his way through various regions of Piggy Island, rescuing Hal in the process. Later, he defeated the pigs and retrieved the eggs. Terence would appear in later episodes as a recurring character.

Angry Birds Classic Tutorial level 7 2

In gameplay, Terence is one of the birds the player might be given to launch with the slingshot. Sometimes he will appear individually, though it is more common that he appears in mass. In Jurassic Pork, Terence might also appear in a cage. When said cage is broken, the player will be able to use Terence in the level. Similar to Red, Terence has no ability, and will do nothing when the player taps onto the screen when he is launched. However, he will have more strength compared to other birds, though he can lose his momentum quite easily. Terence can be also made much stronger by using the Power Potion and/or the King Sling, where he will be able to drill through materials without losing his speed, unless he crashes onto an undestructible object. Each Terence the player does not use to complete the level will grant them a bonus of 10.000 points.

Angry Birds Seasons

Angry Birds Seasons On Finn Ice level 1 2

In Angry Birds Seasons, Terence appears, once again, as a recurring character making his first appearance in Trick or Treat. As such, he appears in every episode of the game, with a somewhat major role in On Finn Ice, where he goes to Finland to visit his cousin, Tony. As with the original Angry Birds, Terence might appear (sometimes in mass) as one of the characters the player can use to launch with a slingshot. In addition, in the 2016 episodes, he might appear inside of a cage, which, when broken, will free him, allowing the player to use him. Terence has the same strength as in the original Angry Birds, and, as with said game, he can be made much stronger with the Power Potion. Tapping onto the screen when Terence is launched will make him scream, though it will have no effect. Each Terence the player does not use to complete the level will grant them a bonus of 10,000 points.

Angry Birds Rio

Angry Birds Rio Hidden Harbor level 15 2

In Angry Birds Rio, Terence is a playable character that first appears in the first level of Airfield Chase. He also appears in every episode of the game following this one. In the "Rio" levels, he has his appearance from the original Angry Birds, while, in the "Rio 2" levels, he was redesigned to look more like in Angry Birds Toons. Terence is as strong as in past games, with no significant changes to his abilities. Tapping onto the screen when Terence is launched will make him scream, though it will have no effect. Each Terence the player does not use to complete the level will grant them a bonus of 10,000 points.

Angry Birds Fuji TV

In addition to China and Rio, Terence has also traveled to Japan, where he dressed in traditional sumo garb.

Angry Birds Friends

Terence technically first appeared in Angry Birds Friends in Surf and Turf, before appearing in the weekly tournaments that Friends hosts. While there are no changes to Terence's size, ability, strength, and basic principles, he receives a small upgrade in his speed and strength. The player can also use power-ups to increase his strength and speed. He can also be leveled-up in the Star Cup, giving more points when he hits something. He has two different skins in the game, The Hunter, only showing up in the early Halloween events, and the Wingman.

He had a design change in recent updates of the mobile version, using his design from Angry Birds Toons, with his voice from there to match. There are some tweaks with the design, such as him having a larger face than the Toons design, and he also still has no defeated sprite. Terence is also available as a purchasable and customizable avatar for the player.

Angry Birds Go!

Rocky Road Cutscence 5

Terence appears in Angry Birds Go! as a playable character, and is first introduced in the Rocky Road theme (fifth overall). Multiple changes are made to his character. For one, he uses his Toons animation in-game, which hadn't happened before. He also, like all of the other characters, uses a 3D model, which was a first for Rovio, as all their games had been in 2D animation up until that point.

Like all the other playable characters in the game, Terence has his own kart, which is the Beep-Beep. This is the kart that he is featured with in Telepods, promotions, and other merchandise.

Terence was first featured in Rocky Road as a boss. The player had to beat him 3 times in a race in order to unlock him as a playable character; and like most of the characters, he has a different ability (in which a storm forms over his kart that shocks nearby opponents, giving him a small speed boost). However, once the game was updated, the boss battles were then removed from the game and replaced with the campaigns. Now the player has to get one star on campaign level 5, race 5. Terence also appears in races as an opponent in all themes of the game.

His ability is to shock rival racers with a storm that was formed over his kart.

Angry Birds Epic

ABEpicTerence

Although not playable, Terence appears in Angry Birds Epic. He leads the player vs. player arena, and like his personality he shows no emotion. In the post-battle room, he replaces Red's head on the totem pole.

Angry Birds POP!

In Angry Birds POP!, Terence appears as a playable character in the Pop-A-Pig mode. When the Bird Gauge is full, Terence will be able to use the Smash Pop.

Angry Birds Fight!

In Angry Birds Fight!, Terence is not playable and is the judge of the Arena just like in Angry Birds Epic, in which he lifts the flag for the respective winner.

Angry Birds 2

Angry Birds 2 Pig City Terence

In Angry Birds 2, Terence appears as a playable character the player can use. In older versions, he could be unlocked at the Bamboo Forest, though later updates would allow the player to unlock him with a Bird key if they wish. He can also be used in the Arena, as long as the game allows the player to use him. In addition, Terence has his own daily event, named Terence Trial!, which can be played on Sundays.

In gameplay, Terence can be used in any level as long as the player has a card of his. Nothing will happen when tapping onto the screen when he is launched. However, he will be able to destroy every type of block. While he will lose his momentum quite easily by hitting stone, he can be even more destructive if he uses a fan or other items to boost himself. He will also be able to deal an incredible amount of damage to bosses. While Terence can normally be used only once, filling the Destructometer can give the player a card with him, allowing them to use him again. The amount of points he can gather depends on his Bird Power, which can be leveled up by giving him enough feathers, upgrading the slingshot, etc.

Angry Birds Reloaded

See also: Terence/Angryverse/Angry Birds Space

Terence is a playable character in Angry Birds Reloaded, first appearing in the first level of Party Crashers. He also appears power-up Wingman as well.

In gameplay, Terence's strength is comparable to that from past games, though he can be made more destructive with the Power Potion, the King Sling, and by using special types of slingshots. By combining all of these together, Terence will be able to drill through objects without losing his momentum, unless he crashes onto an undestructible item. Each Terence the player does not use to complete the level will grant them a bonus of 10.000 points.

Book Appearances

Angry Birds: Red Bird To The Rescue!

Terence cameos at the very end of the story when The Flock all come together to celebrate Red for saving an Egg.

Kaiken

An unusually friendly-looking Terence appears a couple of times in the educational books released by Kaiken. Despite his appearance on the cover of one of the books, he has a minimal role.

Opposites

Terence appears at the beginning of the book, where The Blues point out the size disparagement between themselves and Terence.

Sing The ABCs

When Girl Bird asks The Flock if they would like to sing the ABCs with her at the end of the book, Terence is among the birds as they agree. This is one of the few instances where Terence speaks.

Angry Birds: Bomb's Best Birthday

Terence makes a brief cameo in a flashback to one of Bomb's past birthday parties, jumping out of the way of one of Bomb's explosions.

Angry Birds: Stella and the Egg Tree

Terence has a cameo in a thought bubble, but never appears in the story proper.

Angry Birds: Red And The Great Fling-Off

Terence acts as a background character during the titular Great Fling-Off, Terence acts as a background character. It's unknown if he actually partook in the event or simply spectated.

A Pig From The Stars And Other Stories 1

The Abominable Snowbird

When The Blues create a Snowbird to scare off a group of Minion Pigs, Terence ends up getting trapped inside the Snowbird when they roll it down the mountain. Terence tries to approach them, but The Blues, not knowing Terence is inside, become terrified of the Snowbird and flee. They eventually realize the Snowbird is Terence once the four are trapped in a cave, and free him from the Snowbird. Terence then rolls away, creating a clearing in the cave entrance, allowing The Blues to escape.

A Pig From The Stars And Other Stories 2

Bubbling Over

During a thunderstorm, Terence is hiding under a palm tree with the rest of The Flock. Bubbles later drops his candy, getting it stuck in Terence's tailfeathers. Once The Blues retrieve the candy, he goes unmentioned for the rest of the story.

Angry Birds: The Attack of The Monster

While not being in the story proper, Terence does get a biography in the book.

Angry Birds: The Tale of a Featherless Friend

Terence appears in a single crowd shot at the start of the book. Given how he's never seen again, in combination with being unmentioned by the story proper, it's likely that his inclusion was a visual error.

Powers and abilities

"Terence needs no ability."
Red, Angry Birds 2
Angry Birds Trilogy bird biography artwork 19

Terence's most distinguishing feature is his immense stealth, size and strength, making him a formidable asset to the Angry Birds. As Red himself succinctly puts it, "Terence needs no ability";[18] his body alone allows him to easily plow through even the sturdiest structures.[3] When enraged, Terence's size and mass increase even further, enhancing his destructive capabilities and allowing him to partially sink into the ground, creating devastating cracks in the earth.[16][4][19] This makes him an unstoppable force, capable of tearing through any obstacle in his path.[4] Even outside of conflict, Terence is a near inmovable object, being completely unaffected by being hit with boulders his own size or explosives.[20]

Despite his size, Terence is able to levitate in the air and is very stealthy, with an almost ninja-like ability to appear suddenly and unexpectedly.[3][10] His apparent super speed is enough to outrun even Chuck,[21] who can reach hypersonic speeds[22] (3,836–7,673 mph, or 1,715–3,430 m/s). Furthermore, his intense stare and silent demeanor give him an intimidating reputation that scares pigs and birds alike;[16] his presence alone can make Minion Pigs confess their wrongdoings[10][3] and force his allies to rectify their mistakes.[15]

Outside of his offensive abilities, Terence displays several other skills. He is able to skillfully drive all sorts of karts and summon lightnings to attack nearby opponents,[14] and once built a metallic slingshot from scratch in a single evening.[15]

Transformations

Wingman

Wingman Credits
Main article: Wingman

Through unknown means, Terence can transform into Wingman, a superhero-like transformation where he wears a dark blue mask with a yellow W on it. Most of his abilities remain the same, though he is a little stronger with a drastically different voice from his regular counterpart and has a more boastful personality.

The Incredible Terence

AB big-brother-bird space
Terence as the Incredible Terence, from Angry Birds Space.

Upon travelling through a wormhole of some kind, Terence transformed into the Incredible Terence. In this state, Terence's mass is increased to the point he is as dense as a dwarf star.[23] This transformation first appeared in Angry Birds Space.

Heatwave

Model-heatwave-xs
Main article: Heatwave

By being exposed to the radiation of an extraterrestrial device, Terence can turn into Heatwave. In this state, he gains a robotic look with a firefighter-like appearance. As an Autobird, he can change his form to turn into a truck or a person. He can also shoot lasers that are able to destroy a large amount of obstacles. This transformation only appears in Angry Birds Transformers.

Relationships

Red

"I seem to be able to get through to him more than the others. Maybe it's because we're from the same species."
Red, The World of Angry Birds Official Guide[11]

Terence has a special relationship with Red, who is the only one of the Angry Birds who can understand his turmoil, serving as a source for companionship.[4] Additionally, both birds are cardinals, which is speculated to further enhance their connection.[11]

Chuck

Terence seems to have somewhat of a rivalry with Chuck, with the two once fervently competing in a race.[21] Additionally, whenever Chuck seeks to avoid being held accountable for his own mistakes, Terence is there to force him to correct them.[15]

Tony

Terence and Tony

Tony is Terence's cousin from Helsinki, Finland. It is noted that both are equally serious and grumpy. However, Terence still likes to visit his cousin for Christmas and watch the auroras with him during night-time.[24]

Trivia

  • In the original Angry Birds' files, Terence was referred to as "bigbrother", which led to popular fan theories and speculation of him being Red's older brother, given their similar appearance. He was also referred to as "Big Brother" in his profile of Toy Care's 3D Toothbrush product presentation. However, Rovio has confirmed that they are not related.
    • In the official EU shop website, Terrence is called "Fat Bird", but the url contains "big-brother-plush-toy"[5]
  • Terence used to make Red's modified pain noises in the Flash-based games. This was later on changed in Angry Birds Friends.
  • In Angry Birds Go!, Terence is mentioned in a push notification that says, "Terence looks grumpier than normal. He misses you, so can you come back now?", due to the fact that Terence is always grumpy.
  • Terence's spots are purple rather than dark red on his plush.
  • Although he generally grunts and never speaks, there was one exception: he spoke in the Halloween short "Trick or Tweet" when facing a Frankenstein-pig-dressed Bubbles in response of him taking the other birds' candy after scaring them. His voice, apparently, is deep and menacing, reflecting back on his dark past.
  • He is the first bird to have a confirmed name.
  • On May 11, 2021, at 5:12 P.M EST, the official Garfield Twitter account tweeted the word "terence"[25]

Notes

  1. "BMUs" stands for "Bird Measurement Units", but has no officially confirmed equivalences.
  2. In The World of Angry Birds Official Guide, Red says he and Terence belong to the same species; Red has been usually identified as a cardinal, although sources differ on whether he is a desert cardinal (Angry Birds: Hatching a Universe) or a northern cardinal (National Geographic Angry Birds: Fed up, Feathered, and Furious).
  3. Variant spellings of Terence's name are occasionally used, such as Terrence and Terrance.
