Ross[1] is a supporting antagonist from the Angry Birds series. He is a Minion Pig that is notable for having freckles and a knack for building vehicles. Ross also acts as the main protagonist in Bad Piggies.
Appearance
Ross is an ordinary Minion Pig, but is characterized by the three freckles on each side of his face, arranged in a triangular shape. Like other minions, he also dawns several different costumes depending on the occasion.
Personality
Ross is the right hand man of the monarch of the Piggy kingdom, often doing his things with enthusiasm and a smile on his face, even if sloppily. As a Minion Pig, Ross is blindly loyal to King Pig and carries out his superiors' orders without question, and is relatively comfortable with his life despite often facing enduring abuse from the authorities. Like most Minion Pigs, Ross is also characterized by an absolute refusal to give up, even if the odds are stacked against him.[2]
Game appearances
Bad Piggies
In Bad Piggies, Ross was just a normal pig that carried King Pig's litter, until he found a telescope and the pigs found the eggs. He then ordered Mechanic Pig to make a map of it, which Ross accidentally destroyed with a fan and was ordered to make vehicles in order to obtain all parts of the map, as depicted in the levels of Ground Hog Day.
He then was involved in other failed attempts in trying to get the eggs or food, such as:
- Destroying a wooden map (from a TNT box) in When Pigs Fly, then discovering that there are no eggs (it was only painted on the lens)
- In Rise and Swine, destroying one of Chef Pig's cakes because he wanted to eat.
- Finding out that the "eggs" were made out of stone.
On another day, one of King Pig's statues disappeared, and Ross went to El Porkado and took a better statue, successfully finishing the task and making King Pig happy and proud of him. He also survived the birds' attack when they found out that he was stealing the eggs.
In gameplay, he appears as one of the two characters that can be put on vehicles and the main one with the other being King Pig. He is required to pilot vehicles. The player can add essential material to the vehicles but without him, they cannot be piloted.
Ross occupies a block space. When there is no engine but a fueled part, he will start to move it by himself and start to sweat, his fuel is weaker than any of the engines. He has his own costumes, and wears Halloween costumes in Tusk Til' Dawn that can be wore if he is already with a costume, and an adventurer hat in The Road to El Porkado that can't be worn if he is already wearing a costume. The Halloween Costumes are the following:
- Jason Mask;
- Hannibal Mask;
- Vampire Bat Mask;
- Mummy Mask and
- Devil Mask
He will react according to the situation he is on. He will smile when the player puts a good item (Relating to the level), when the vehicle is going on a moderate speed and without danger and when he finishes. He will be scared when the player puts an item that previously injured him or scared him, when the vehicle is extremely fast and is in danger. He will get hurt when he hits a solid object or surface and star dizzy birds will appear on his head.
Ross can propel gray wheels, fans, propellers, spring-loaded boxing-gloves, and suction-cup wheels. When the player is stuck, Mechanic Pig fixes the vehicle that Ross rides.
Angry Birds
In the original Angry Birds, Ross appears in the button for the Bad Piggies episode and in the episode's cutscenes. He helps King Pig steal the eggs with Mechanic Pig. He does not physically appear in the levels themselves.
Powers and abilities
As a Minion Pig, Ross is a talented mechanic, being able to build all sorts of makeshift vehicles with a few parts, although they are often fragile and prone to breaking down easily.[2] Additionally, he has demonstrated tremendous resilience, having sustained all sorts of impacts and explosions with no noticeable injuries.
Relationships
King Pig
Like most Minion Pig, Ross follows King Pig's orders without questions, and goes through ludicrous lengths to please the King. In addition to the egg-nabbing duties that are expected of Minions, Ross goes above and beyond to please the King. Ross is known to put himself through harrowing (and debatably necessary) missions unprompted in order to please Smooth Cheeks[3].
The Flock
Like most Minion Pigs, Ross's conflict with the birds seems to be born out of duty rather than malice. His need to please King Pig puts him in direct conflict with the birds, who have no reservations beating him senseless. Even when Ross has a fake egg, the birds still attack him. It's unknown if it's out of any especial hatred for Ross, or if the Flock members outside of The Blues just don't know the Egg is fake.
Trivia
- The first mention of his name was in notifications for Bad Piggies in 2017.[4]
- In some images made by Rovio, it is revealed that Ross owns a house, a pig-shaped balloon, a skate, and a wooden plane.
- Before the announcement of The Angry Birds Movie, where it was revealed that Freckled Pig would be called "Ross", Rovio released a "fake" comment where they say that Ross (yet unnamed at the time) had an actual name, but it was hard to pronounce, so fans started nicknaming him Freckles due to having said freckles.[citation needed]
