?, known by fans as Hatena, is a character introduced with his master, MZD, in pop'n music 2. 14 games later, it became a standalone character from pop'n music 15 ADVENTURE.

Appearance
Hatena looks like a navy blue-colored silhouette, and possesses horns, cleat wrists, a piece of hair, and elf-shaped ears in main occasions. They also wield a trident sometimes in animations. They are colored black sometimes in MZD's 2P palettes.
In pop'n music 15 ADVENTURE, Hatena takes a different shape of simply a lean, black figure. Their 2P palette colors is white.

Characters in Hatena's Animations
- There are characters who made cameos in Hatena's animations:
- Micro makes a cameo in Hatena's Great animation, which is replaced by Madam Ragora in the 2P version.
- Roco Moco makes a cameo in Hatena's FEVER! animation. Their 2P FEVER! animation, however, replaces Roco Moco with Fili.
- MZD makes a cameo in Hatena's FEVER! Win animation. MZD appears in their Win and FEVER! Win animations in pop'n music うさぎと猫と少年の夢.
- The flowered eye of Hoshi no Hito is on Hatena's face in their MISS, LOSE, and DANCE animations. It appeared again in Chaos:Q MISS animation, but on the top of their head.
- Titicaca appears on Hatena's Ojama animation
- Zusin appears in Hatena's DANCE animation, while Super Mogu replaces Titicaca in the 2P DANCE animation.
- All of these characters are from the Waku-Waku Mimi Nyami Tankentai (わくわくミミニャミ探検隊?). Each element in both palettes for Hatena create representation for the character who appear in its animation: water for the GREAT animation, air/wind for the FEVER! animation, fire for the OJAMA animation, earth for the DANCE animation, and darkness for the MISS, LOSE, and DANCE animations.
Etymology
- The nickname fans named the shadow, "Hatena" (はてな?), translates to "question" in Japanese, thus their name is written as "?".
