Chou-u (
Appearance
Chou-u has tan skin, brown hair, and dark gray eyes, and is missing his two front teeth.
Personality
A typical child, Chou-u is excitable, adventurous, and petulant, bothering others for snacks or just out of boredom. He lived a somewhat spoiled life early on and expected servants to do menial tasks based on the influence of Shenmei. However, living around the penny-pinching Madam and Maomao has made him more entrepreneurial, turning his talent for drawing and painting into a side hustle.
Abilities
Painting: Chou-u is talented at painting people and animals.[1]
Background
Chou-u was born as Kyou-u to the Shi clan as the son of Shirou and an unnamed woman. Sometime after his birth, his mother became involved in Shenmei's orgies.
He stayed at the hidden hot springs village to participate in the harvest festival held in honor of a fox deity. When Suirei and Shisui returned to the village, Chou-u greeted them after bumping into Maomao.[2] During the festival, he participated as one of the children representing the fox deity at the shrine.[3]
Having nothing to do after Suirei and Shisui disappeared, Chou-u helped Maomao escape her room and led her into a storehouse outside of the village, but both were caught by Shenmei and brought to a fortress.[4]
In the fortress, Chou-u joined four other Shi clan children in playing around, while worried about his mother. He tried to help Maomao escape from her room by distracting her guard but was instead caught. Though he claimed that he was just playing, Shenmei soon arrived. While she contemplated what punishment to give to Chou-u, Maomao took the blame for his actions and was sent to the taibon.[5]
With the Forbidden Army on the move, Chou-u drank the resurrection medicine given by Loulan, along with the other children and fell into a death-like state. They were later discovered by Maomao, who carried them out of the fortress with help from Lihaku. He eventually woke up, losing his memories in the process, and was renamed Chou-u. Because of this, Chou-u was sent to live with Maomao in the red light district while the other children were taken in by Ah-Duo.[6]
