Ailan

Ailan (愛藍 (アイラン) , Airan^?) is a minor character in The Apothecary Diaries. She is a lady-in-waiting in the Jade Pavilion. As Gyokuyou's servant, she shares cleaning, cooking, and nursing duties in the palace with Gyokuyou's other ladies-in-waiting.

Appearance

Ailan is a tall and attractive woman in her late teens with dark blue eyes and long black hair. She wears her hair in an updo with a bun atop her head and strands falling on either side of her face ending in loose curls just below her chin.

Personality

Ailan is quite kind and friendly, having thought of sharing a book with others so they could enjoy it. She enjoys sharing gossip with her fellow ladies-in-waiting when not busy, but quickly returns to work in fear of Hongniang.

Abilities

Diligent: Ailan works hard to ensure the Jade Pavilion is clean and tidy, including doing work not within a normal lady-in-waiting's scope.

Writing: Maomao notes that she has "lovely handwriting"^[2], which she used to make copies of a book.

Background

Like her fellow ladies-in-waiting, Ailan comes from the Western Capital and is the daughter of an official.^[3] She became a lady-in-waiting to Gyokuyou when they entered the Inner Court and has been very loyal to her since, alongside Hongniang, Yinghua, and Guiyuan.

After reading a book the Emperor had given to Gyokuyou, Ailan wanted to share it with the rest of the palace women within the inner court. With Maomao's suggestion, she decided to do so by copying the book text.^[2]

When she fell sick from a fever, Ailan spent a night at the clinic to isolate herself.^[4] Maomao also gave her some cold medicine she had made, which drew Shenlü’s attention.
