Cleric

The Cleric, also called Sister in the Japanese versions of some games, is a magic-wielding support class that appears across the Fire Emblem series. It is a female-exclusive class that uses Staves or White Magic to heal their allies. In some games, Clerics have limited offensive capabilities, but are generally not fit to engage in direct combat due to their typically low defense.

The male equivalent of this class is the Priest, though some games do feature female Priests.

History in the Series

In its original inception in Gaiden, the Sister class is established as a support class separate from the Priest class. Wielding White Magic for healing purposes and Nosferatu for defensive purposes, the Sister class promotes into the Saint class in this title.

The Sister class returns in Mystery of the Emblem, where it serves the same purposes as its predecessor and largely replaces the Priest class from the original. This version of the class promotes into the Bishop class.

The traditional Sister class does not appear in Genealogy of the Holy War or Thracia 776. A Sister class does appear in Thracia 776, though it is more similar to the Shaman class from Genealogy, as they are not just able to heal allies, but also defend themselves with a variety of Anima magic.

In The Blazing Blade, the sister class returns, with the English-localized name of Cleric, and is again a female-only counterpart to the Priest class. The Cleric again promotes into the Bishop class.

In The Sacred Stones, the Cleric class is further given the option to promote into Valkyrie alongside Bishop, a class that is able to utilise both Light magic and Staves while mounted on a Horse for better movement.

The Cleric class is exclusive to Mist in Path of Radiance and Radiant Dawn, wielding staves. This version of the class promotes into the Valkyrie class. In Radiant Dawn, the Cleric class is given the additional ability to wield swords.

In Shadow Dragon and New Mystery of the Emblem, the Cleric class is once again instituted as one that wields staves, alongside being clearly distinguished from the male Curate class. Female characters that were originally Priests in Shadows Dragon and the Blade of Light, including Lena, Maria, and Elice, now use the Cleric class in Shadow Dragon.

Clerics can promote into either Sage or War Cleric in Awakening. Sages are better suited for more magical Clerics, while War Clerics are better suited for those with more Strength or exploiting the magic-based Bolt Axe.

In Fates, the Cleric class is known as the Shrine Maiden and is regarded as a Hoshidan class. Considered the female counterpart of the Monk class, the Shrine Maiden can either promote into the Priestess or the Onmyoji class.

In the spin-off Tokyo Mirage Sessions ♯FE, the Cleric appears as enemy Mirages in Illusory Shibuya as Dark Cleric, and a stronger variant, the Red Cleric, appears in Illusory Daiba Studio. A Dark Cleric named Mitesh is found in Illusory Daitama and can be recruited for Illusory Urahara. A Dark Cleric and a Red Cleric respectively save Iori but want nothing to do with him at first, but decide to give him words of encouragement and realize he may not be such a bad guy when Itsuki Aoi informs them that Iori's Performa is being drained by a Mirage who is using his love for her as a source of power. Three different Red Clerics are summed by a Culprit Mirage and are known as Hostage Mirage A, B and C. In a series of side quests a Red Cleric Mirage is hounded by other mirages and she asks Itsuki to deal with specific ones, two she remembers and one she forgets the name of but recalls a clue. Fulfilling her requests rewards Itsuki with a Treasure Key. A stronger variant known as Corundum Cleric appears only in the Encore exclusive EX Story summoned by the Wandering Myrmidon Mirage.

In Fire Emblem Warriors, Cleric and Shrine Maiden both appear and are treated slightly differently. Cleric is the exclusive class of Lissa and she wields Axes as an homage to the War Cleric promotion from Awakening. Shrine Maiden is the exclusive class of Sakura and she wields Bows as an homage to the Priestess promotion from Fates. Both of these classes allow usage of Staves.

In Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia, a remake of Gaiden, the Cleric class functions similarly to the Sister class that appeared in the earlier title. With the addition of Faye and the Villager class becoming unisex, female Villagers can possibly promote into Clerics.

Other Games

In TearRing Saga: Utna Heroes Saga, Sisters are non-promotable and distinguished from the Priest class for being able to transform into Holy Dragons using their personal rings.

In Vestaria Saga I, there are two variations of the Cleric, the Sestra and the Priestess. Both are identical in terms of stats and functionality. The only difference being that the Priestess can promote into the High Priestess while the Sestra cannot promote at all.

Overview

Combat

Though entirely unarmed, the Cleric is one of the most essential classes for the battlefield. They can heal immense amounts of HP, allowing the player to avert the permanent deaths of their combat units, alongside helping them to save healing items for emergencies. The Cleric class is, however, much like its male counterpart, defenceless, as their Defense is too low for them to sustain more than a few hostile blows. With no viable means of retaliating during enemy onslaughts, it is thus highly recommended that Clerics are guarded and blocked at all times, so as not to give the enemy any opportunity to strike. While a unit acts as defender, Clerics will be able to support with healing magic from the sidelines. In Radiant Dawn, Mist is granted unique access to Florete, a special blade forged to help her defend herself when engaged in battle.

Clerics do not gain EXP when using a staff in Gaiden, and will only do so when attacking.
