- "Thanks for waiting! Here's your very own sandflier!"
- — Merchant in Shyde
The Sandflier is a form of transport that is used in Breath of Fire IV.
It was originally a war machine that seems to have been converted for civillian purposes. Merchants such as Marlok use these for transportation of goods. It resembles a ship.
Story
Cray and Nina initially travel on a sandflier from Wyndia to find Elina, Nina's sister who has gone missing. After being attacked by Sa Ryong, the sandflier is destroyed. Cray remains to guard the wreckage while Nina heads to Sarai to procure Sandflier Parts.
After meeting Ryu and following a trail of information that leads to Sandflier Valley, the party manages to get the parts but they are attacked by Rasso from the Fou Imperial Army and have to flee northwards to Chamba after those events. They need to make a detour and finally reunite with Cray. They have to leave behind the original sandflier.
On their search for Elina, the party eventually reaches the Wharf. Ryu, Cray and Ershin perform various chores for the wealthy but dubious businessman Marlok. He proceeds to smuggle them to Kyoin in a sandflier, stowed away inside a VIP crate.
The party finally needs to get their own sandflier as their old one at Crash Site was salvaged by plunderers. They travel to Shyde to procure such a sandflier, however they cannot afford it. Ursula and Scias decide to hijack a sandflier that happens to pass by, which is none other than the one of the wealthy Marlok. He does not condone their action, but provides them with a Bond which can be used to purchase their own sandflier. He sees it as investment, knowing that Ryu is the Yorae Dragon after all.
Finally, the party can revisit former locations and travel to new ones with their new trusty vehicle.
Trivia
- Cray initially stays back at the Crash Site to guard the sandflier from scavengers. Ironically, if the party leaves and returns after they get their own sandflier in the story, scavengers will be seen ripping the original sandflier apart. There is also an NPC for the Treasure Ball Sidequest.
- Marlok uses sandfliers as transportation between the Eastern Continent and the Western Continent.
- Sandflier Valley is a scrapyard for broken Sandfliers.
